George Douglas Medlock, Sr. was born October 22, 1947 in Rosedale (Homewood), Alabama to the late George Medlock and Betty Brown.  He graduated from Rosedale High School and received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Alabama State University.  He was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and one of the founding members of the Delta Beta Chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity of America at Alabama State University.

He was a lifelong musician who played the clarinet. He was a member of the Mighty Marching Hornets band at Alabama State University.  His musical ability allowed him to join the US Air Force where he was a member of the band during the Vietnam War.  He continued to play his clarinet in community bands and at various events.

He cherished family immensely and enjoyed fishing with his children.  When his children were young, he would take them fishing and spend hours talking and teaching them the “Big Fish Medlock” way.

He married Mildred Perry and to that union three children were born.  He leaves to cherish his memory his eldest daughter, Tonya Austin (Darryl Grayson, Sr); a son, George D. Medlock, Jr. (Alicia); and his youngest daughter, Kimberly Haynes (Alton); and four grandchildren, Taylor, Elijah, George, and Harper; and a host of other relatives (including brothers and sisters) and friends. Of honorable mention is his brother in Christ, Carl Calhoun.

Visitation will be held on Friday, February 4th from 12pm-4pm at W.E. Lusain Funeral Home Chapel, 249 6th Avenue SW, Birmingham, Alabama 35211.  Graveside service will be held on Saturday, February 5th at 1pm at Elmwood Cemetery.

I love you Uncle Doug. I will miss you so much. Especially, your jokes and clarinet playing. We always had the best times at your and aunt Mildred's house.

More than 30 years ago I was blessed to meet a wonderful friend Tonya at college and gained another father. Mr Medlock was an awesome woodwind player and we often disagree over whether the brass instruments were actually better. I know he is in heaven belting out beautiful clarinet melodies. May God bless and comfortyou all.
