The Measure of a Man

December 29, 2013

George Ward Yount, Jr. of Bremerton, Washington, passed away peacefully at age 74 surrounded by his family on December 4, 2013 at the Bremerton Harrison Medical Center following a brief illness.

He was born on September 12, 1939 in Tonasket, Washington to (George) Ward Yount and (Margaret) Louise Barkhuff. He celebrated 45 years of marriage with his loving wife, the former Jane Estes (Spady) on June 7, 2013, and enjoyed the love and admiration of his three children, Susan (and husband Greg) Walker of Port Orchard, Washington, Richard (and wife Debra) Yount of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Mindy (and husband Jack) Schmidt of Bremerton. He was blessed with nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

George graduated  from Tonasket High School in 1958 and attended welding trade school in Spokane, Washington. After serving his nation as a welder/burner at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for 28 years, he fulfilled a lifetime ambition of becoming a long-haul truck driver. He retired in June 2005 after 13 years service with Gordon Trucking, Inc. in Pacific, Washington.

A locally well-known and avid model railroad hobbyist, he was one of the founding members of the Bremerton Northern Model Railroad club. Much of his life was dedicated to the Boy Scouts of America, attaining the rank of Eagle Scout and contributing many years of selfless service to his community with Troop 1539 of Silverdale, Washington. Passionate about motorcycling, he was a performing member of the Seattle Cossacks Motorcycle Stunt Team and frequently shared his enthusiasm with other bikers at Stepps Chop Shop in Bremerton. He lived his life to the fullest, loved his friends and family unconditionally, and always had a great story to share.

In addition to his immediate family, George is survived by his siblings John Yount of  Grayland, Washington, Robert Yount of Lemore, California, and Margaret Yount of Walla Walla, Washington, along with numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother James Yount, his grandson Jason Gilbert, and his nephew David Yount.
