George Washington Green, the youngest of 8 children born to the late John and Mattie Green was born February 22,1929 in Birmingham, Alabama. He attended school in the Birmingham City Schools System as a graduate of Powderly High School. In 1948 he married Helen Johnson. He enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1951 and served 23 years, retiring in 1974. During his time of service to our country SSgt. Green traveled all over the world and served three tours in the Vietnam War. After returning home, he earned his certificate of trade at Lawson State Community College in Commercial Sewing and Tailoring where he often time returned to work as a substitute teacher. After the death of his wife Helen in 1983, George married Queenie Grant. He retired from Western Supermarket as the first African American Manager in Birmingham and from Security Engineers where he worked until becoming ill in 2014.

George received Christ as his personal Savior and was baptized under the pastorate of the late Reverend Wilbert Jackson of West End Hills Missionary Baptist Church. Although still a member of WEHMB, George fellowshipped through Bible studies taught in his home by his son, Elder Brandon Grant, Sr., Pastor of Kingdom of God Ministries, and his family, after George became homebound.

After a lengthy illness, George departed this earthly life at 6:45 pm Friday, January 25,2019.

George was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mattie Green; his wife of 35 years, Helen; four brothers, Henry, Lewis, Clifford and Gilbert; three sisters Freddie Mae, Annie Mae, and Elizabeth; and his granddaughter Chrislyn.
