I was just was talking about our Browns Park fishing adventures yesterday! Jay & I agreed that that area is some of the best the West has to offer for fishing and you introduced me to it. I'll get back there someday and we will fish together again.

And the other time up to Rabbit Ears in the VW chug chug chug to pick boletus with Katie and the dog (Not?) and the thunderstorms rolled in- had me running for safety. The storms were scary but the fungi absolutely delicious

Happy Birthday Gerry and with the recent passing of John Englund, I am reminded when he drove your old van up Rabbit Ears Pass. It was 22 years ago (KT's 70th) and John arrived way after the rest of us - he laughingly said he was reminded on why he gave up on VWs many years earlier. That orange van had some history - the Brown's Park incident with the radiator, the Brule River trip (starter?) when I graduated and I'm sure many others.

I am late this year... I think of you often when any garden questions come up. Katie is still kickin' as you most likely know. She can answer most questions bur she forgets a lot now. I learned quite a bit from you and Katie but only absorb it now. All the slings and arrows be glad you don't have to deal with it.

Gerry- just finished a woodworking project, an activity that always reminds me of your skills, the tools and projects that you showed me during the times that you hosted me for weekends at the barn.  Now, if only you can let me know if I did a good job!

Dearest Gerry, Jim and I are back in Steamboat Springs, and I have been by your place a few times, remembering your garden, your pond, you. We both remember you and our times and our learning with you. I often wish I could talk to you in person, but wanted you to know you are so much a guide for me, and I feel your advice in the dirt when I get to be there. Thank you, and a happy birthday. Love, Melanie and Jim...

Happy Birthday Gerry! I'm still finding an image of you here and there as I go through our old slides. The one I added is fading with time but my memories of the infamous camping trip are good and make us all laugh.

I thank you Gerry for my sore fingers, chapped hands and my sense of fulfillment of a job well done. I thank you for the passion of garlic - now becoming another of my planting obsessions that I must not only obey, but feed and expand into another "hobby". We can talk about the endless varieties, flavor nuances and growth habits much like we did about so many subjects so many years ago...

I have some great photos of the many boletus that Gerry showed me how to identify....and I can still envision the rooms of the barn vividly which all showed his unique and innovative craftsmanship. I was fortunate to have been able to know him and his friends, from the first day that I drove over the pass to Steamboat in the late 80s.

I didn't know Gerry, but the Tread of Pioneers Museum received a collection of historic cameras from his estate and I have created a small display with the cameras as well as information on Gerry. It's been a pleasure to look through this site, see his photos and art, read the touching memories of him, and be able to put together a small display on Gerry.

I was cutting garlic scapes today (Gerry's Birthday) and realized much of this garlic is from original stock Gerry gave me so many years ago...Happy Birthday and thanks for the memories and great garlic!

A note from High Country News - from the November 11, 2013 issue by Sarah Gilman:

The staff and board were surprised and deeply humbled by the generous check that arrived in our mailbox last month, a bequest from the late Gerald Hollingworth of Steamboat Springs, Colo. Gerald was a longtime reader who shared High Country News articles with his friends and engaged them in long conversations on many Western subjects, including one of his passions, water rights. He was also an innovative artist. We grieve his passing and are grateful for his kindness; his gift will be put to good use.

I remember having a great day XC skiing with Gerry around this time of year in 2004. We skied some of the trails at Howelsen and then shared a stromboli at Cugino's along with a few beers - good times!

A couple more things...Gerry introduced me to Victor Wooten, the amazing musician, that stated something like this, that if in fact we are all just vibrations, and vibrations last forever, then wouldn't we want to be the best vibration that we could, as often as we could? Gerry taught me that. We have an herb garden with a large stone from mother earth painted "The GerryPatch".

Gerry was a very important person in our lives. We were fortunate enough to know him for over 10 years, not long enough I am sure, but enough to influence our lives and thoughts. He trusted and loved us, and we learned a ton and loved him back. He supported us in very difficult times, much more than just financially. He taught us love and patience, and so much more. When I was a college student in Colorado in the 90s, Gerry always welcomed me up to the "barn" in Steamboat when I needed to get away from studying on a weekend.  I learned a lot from him, about the outdoors, geography, western water politics, good wine and food, and always with a bit of laughter and sarcasm mixed in. Gerry, I always remember your kindness and times we shared together.

Gerry was an artist, fine craftsman, gardener, hunter, philosopher, expert fly fisherman/fly tyer, mechanic, and a great conversationalist. I enjoyed many quality experiences with Gerry over the years - whether it was fly fishing the Rockies or enjoying a good meal and extended discussion on whatever topic(s) came to mind. Please share some stories or pay a tribute to Gerry!

Ice fishing with dogs and kids

February 26, 2013

This photo (credit to others) reminds me of a trip to Steamboat Lake with my nieces, nephews, adults as well as 4 dogs.  Gerry and I were trying to teach the kids how to ice fish - we drilled holes, set up fishing rods etc., while 5 kids and a few adults fought to fish.   Utter chaos ensued when some of the dogs became entangled in the fishing lines.  I remember Gerry patiently untangling the nightmare while my niece Jordan used the one free line to pull fish after fish through the ice!
