ForeverMissed

Passed away peacefully at his home September 25,2021 after a short battle with cancer.

Jerry was a graduate of Talladega High School  before enlisting in the United States Navy. While in the Navy, he was stationed in Puerto Rico where he would meet and marry the love of his life, Elizabeth “Lisa” Beard. After being married on April 5, 1975, the couple returned to Jerry’s home state in Alabama. The two eventually they would call Alabaster their home for the past 42 years.

Jerry was a spitfire, grumpy as all get out, and stubborn as a mule - but had a heart of gold. He could make you laugh with his witty and dry humor, or be sweet as long as you were not blocking the tv during a Bama game. He was definitely one of a kind and always lived life to have a good time.  JP, as his children called him, was always involved and active in his children’s lives. He was often coaching every sport and sat through every recital with a smile on his face. He was a fighter and many people know he defied the odds more times than we can count! He fought a good fight but this round the cancer won, and he received the ultimate healing.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife Elizabeth Payne, his father, Bolton Samuel Payne, and his in-laws, Walter and Bertha Beard.

He is survived by his children; son, Shawn Payne (Emily), daughter, Lisandra Miller, Grandchildren, Paxton and Grayson Miller, and Julianne and Michaela Payne, his mother, Irene Payne, sister, Brenda Callahan, brother Bolton Gary Payne (Loni) and a host of other family members.

Gerald and Lisa remained close to my heart for as many years as when we first met. Gerald was one dear friend since third grade; we shared many fond memories throughout grammar school, high school and adulthood. Gerald formed a clique of best friends in high school and he anointed us “The Fearsome Foursome” (Gerald, Lewis Locklin, Joe Little, and me).

Gerald was always a good athlete in baseball and football and we played high school football together.

I remember when he and Lisa met in Puerto Rico and afterwards Lisa got me a good job in 1976- Even when I moved to New Jersey we all kept in touch.

I know Gerald was heartbroken at Lisa’s sudden passing but he still did not “give in” to cancer. He was optimistic that he was gaining weight even 2 months ago. I know he fought a valiant fight and is an inspiration to me.

I wish to extend his family the warmest wishes and love, especially to Mrs. Payne who has always been and remains an inspiration at age 101!
