This memorial website was created in memory of our loved one, Gertie Anderson. We will remember her forever.

Bertha Gertrude “Gertie” Shelton Anderson was born 24 June 1931 in Owensboro, Kentucky to the late Silas William & Viola Dora Allen Shelton. Gertie passed away into the arms of Jesus at 11:35 a.m. on Sunday, 7 March 2021 at the home of her daughter, Glenda Knight, in Kaufman, Texas.

Her paternal grandparents was Rev Silas Wheeler Shelton & Mary Jane Graham from Clinton County, Kentucky. Her maternal grandparents was Robert Bomer Allen & Elizabeth Knight from Owensboro, Kentucky.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William A. Payne, son of Lucian Arthur Payne & Lucian Maxcentia Johnson and father of Gertie’s six children; three brothers, Silas Wheeler, Thomas Earl, and William Mariam “Marvin “ Shelton; and three sisters, Mary Evelyn Clements, Willie Marguerite McGrew, and Elizabeth “Libby” Reeves; grandson Art Green and granddaughter Cynthia Somerville.

Gertie & William A. Payne were married at St Stephen Catholic Church 21 August 1948. Gertie is survived by three daughters, Glenda Carol Knight (Jim) of Kaufman, TX. Kathy Joan Somerville (Jeff) of Portland, TN. Tammy Lee Brooks (John) Newburg, MO and three sons, Gary Stewart Payne (Donna) Mesquite, TX,  Daniel Bruce Payne (Montez) Owensboro, KY and Richard Arthur Payne (Sheryl) Kearney, MO.  And 15 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren, and 17 great great grandchildren. 

Gertie’s second marriage was to Richard M. Hays, son of Richard T. Hays Jr. & Betty Kinison, on 23 May 1987 in Robertson County, TN. No children to this marriage. 

Gertie’s third marriage was to Joe Edward Anderson, son of Albert Anderson & Alma Reed, on 8 February 1995 in Owensboro, KY. No children to this marriage. 

Gertie will be remembered with happy memories of her walk through this life as a Christian and child of God. She leaves an after glow of smiles in our hearts of happy and laughing times which brightened our days. Her wit, compassion and spirit will forever be missed by all who knew her. 

Services was held at James H. Davis Funeral Home & Crematory on Saturday, 13 March 2021 at 12 noon. Burial was at Resurrection Cemetery in Owensboro, Kentucky.
