A Recipe For Happiness and Longevity

Mrs. Girthere Williams Walker was born on August 26, 1926 in Birmingham, AL to her parents the late Richard Williams and Camilla Livingston Williams. She was the second of seven close knit siblings and moved to Barbour County at an early age. A God fearing family, the Williamses were active members of Shiloh Methodist Church. Girthere spent her formative years being shaped by a loving wholesome family life on the farm, jovial days at Center Ridge School where she met her future husband Alto Lee Walker Jr, and her fervent faith in the Lord which guided her steps until she went to meet him on December 16, 2015.

After his return from serving in the Navy during WWII, Alto and Girthere were married on July 28, 1946 in Barbour County. Shortly thereafter, they moved to Tuskegee, AL in September then welcomed their first child the following May. Over the course of their 69 year marriage, the couple's descendants grew to include four children, eleven grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren.

Girthere felt her life to be blessed with such a large family and devoted herself to serving her loved ones and her church. After joining Greater St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church on June 20, 1950, she served as a member of the Deaconess, Usher, and Pastor's Aid ministries. She enjoyed sewing and worked for a time in that field; farming and gardening; and traveling all across the US and Hawaii. She was both a master homemaker renowned for her baking skills as well as a shrewd manager who was tireless in her efforts to help with her husband's business, Walkers Enterprises. Her legacy of love, faith, and hard work remain not only with her family but with all those who knew her as an elder in the community.

Though she will be greatly missed, her 89 years on this earth came to a natural and peaceful conclusion at the home she shared with her loving husband in Tuskegee. She has gone on to glory where she will join her daughter Christine Devon Bryant, her grandson Damien Harris, her sister Beula Jones, and her brothers Ed Dancy and Richard Williams Jr.

Those left to cherish Girthere include her husband Alto Lee Walker Jr. of Tuskegee, AL; her children Marjorie W. Motley, Alto L. Walker III, and Keith B. Walker also all of Tuskegee, AL; her sisters Doris Walker of Miami, FL, Princella Joseph and Celie Sombright of Chicago, IL, and her brother Walter Dancy of Birmingham, AL; her grandchildren Jason, Tina, Daniel, Vernon, Byron, Soladine, Candace, Cheryl Renee, Alto, and Altoree; her great grandchildren Sanaya, Carmen, Courtney, Alexis, Creasy, Owen, Sydney, Kaitlin, Savannah, and Daniel Ethan; and a host of other relatives and friends.
