Gladys or Ms Haynes as I always called her, was always smart, stylish and classy. I met her when I worked at Main Street School, which I attended, around 1974. My friend, the late Ron Marsden, and I had created a girls drill team at the school. Adrianne was a member. When the mothers show up I was struck by this tall, elegant and beautiful lady. Naturally I was smitten. Gladys told me she had a daughter my age. But I told her she had struck me like lightning. As it turned out we both lived on 51st Street. We developed a very close friendship, with her being a Cancer and me a Pisces. I had just finished my BA degree at Cal Poly Pomona, so intellectually we had great conversations. Plus I had a tremendous album collection, which we both enjoyed.I last saw Gladys when she had moved to Long Beach. Ironically Gladys’s birthday was the same day as my late brother George, the greatest person ever in my life. George died in 1968 in a car accident. Ironically her passing occurred on my brother under me birthday. Over the years she often crossed my mind. I am so sorry I didn’t get a chance to spend time later with her. But I am glad she lived a long and beautiful life with wonderful family and friends. Reading of her passing brought tears to my eyes.My heart will always hold a very special place filled with love for Ms Haynes.Peace and blessings to you all.

My Dear Aunt Gladys.
While I sit here remembering all those great memories, Christmas in San Diego sitting around the Piano with either Mom or Uncle Frank playing. You and I singing soprano because we could hit the high notes. You calling me “Kim-tone” oh how I miss those times. You making your famous Cornish hen with wild rice. Your laugh, I could hear it now. Rest well Aunt Gladys. Gone but never, ever forgotten. With Loads of Love!

I wrote this poem about you and read it to you for your birthday.

Title: Ms Haynes

Ms Haynes Ms Haynes
Cross her and feel the pain

Teaching is her art
And art is in her heart

Music, mostly jazz, taps her foot
Miles and Coltrane, she won’t stay put

Sass melted into class
Infinite style mixed with bad ass

Act a fool, she will make a fuss
Make it right and make it just

Unbreakable on the outside
Shhh, soft on the inside

Sippin tequila or maybe some wine
My Bnana will be just fine

Dear Aunt Gladys -

Thank you for all the times you took time out to teach me the fine art of shopping. I will forever remember our early morning annual trips to the Judy's Warehouse sale, where we would stand in line for hours (after stopping for donuts, of course), then rush the warehouse when the doors opened, all the time grabbing clothes and trying them on in the aisle ways! Oh the chaotic fun we had.

In addition, a special thank you for all the love and support over the years. You believed in me during times when I didn't believe in myself. Once during a particularly trying time for me, you gave me the book "Don't Sweat The Small Stuff." I've held on to that book for over 20 years (and still have it). Oh how that book saved my sanity so many times! The last time we saw each other, you told me how proud you were of me, and how you always knew that I "would make it." I'm pleased that I made you proud and even more than that, I am honored to be your niece.

Love you forever and a day,

"Niecy" (Dee)

Her Life

Memories of Growing Up

February 15, 2021
My Dearest Sister,
The following story was told to me by our Mom, the late Thelma Mc Coy Graves.
In the year 1939 she was out walking and was pregnant with our brother Gerald.  She was carrying our sister Patricia Ann in her arms.  You and I were holding hands and walking behind her.  I was walking slowly and was a little "chubby" and you were "slender".  The distance between Mom and us was growing.  You called out to Mom and said, "Inez won't walk fast and I'm tired of pulling her along.  She is stopping and looking at everything".
You were my oldest sister and you were in my life for eighty-four years and four months.  We were not only sisters but were also best friends and confidants.  You were an introvert and I am an extrovert but we were so in tune with each other.
We enjoyed many experiences together over the years and learned valuable life lessons along the way.  We experienced accomplishments, joy, loss, along with the wonderous births of our children, just to name a few.
The core family members that we grew up with totaled 20 members.  They included our parents, four children, our maternal grandparents, four uncles, one aunt and six cousins.  Little is known about our paternal grandparents, our father, John Quentin Haynes, Jr., was an only child and his parents passed away at an early age.  Our parents marital union ended in divorce.  Later we were blessed to have John J Graves "Pop" become our step-father.  He was such a positive and wonderful figure in our lives.
Growing up the four of us went to church every Sunday.  The only exceptions for not going were bad weather or illness.  This practice continued from early childhood until we were old enough to move out of our family home and live on our own.
We went to a lot of piano recitals where "Mom" and Uncle Frank performed.  We loved going to the beach together.  We went to museums, open air concerts in the park and to the movie theater.  Going to the neighborhood "Rec" the recreational center was another favorite.
Most holidays were spent at our grandparents home in El Centro, California.  At Christmas we all gathered around the piano and sang Christmas carols.
You were so talented.  I recall when we were attending Point Loma High School in San Diego when you had paintings sent to Los Angeles by your art teacher.  They were exhibited at Bullocks Wilshire Department Store which was considered a luxury department store for over sixty years.  Chounard Art Institute which was a progressive Fine Arts School in the 50's and 60's was another site where your artwork was exhibited.
Fast forward to Los Angeles Sis, which became your home.  I moved to Los Angeles years later.  Your children Brenda Dixon, Michael Gates and Adrianne Gamell were always well taken care of and enjoyed great meals because you were an excellent cook.
I was so proud when you graduated from California State University Los Angeles, and your long career as an elementary school teacher.
Preceding your move to Georgia, as a family we enjoyed countless get togethers and family dinners here in Los Angeles.  We had a lot of fun.
I am now the oldest living member of the 20 member core group.
We however, have numerous offspring from the group, children, grandchildren, nephews, nieces, cousins, great grandchildren, and extended family members; each talented in their own unique way that are living new chapters to add to our family story for generations to come.
Lastly, while you were here on earth I always knew where you were, now you are in heaven.  With that said, I will heed a few words taken from one of your favorite songs, Way Up High" which was recorded by Damita Jo.  "There's a land in the sky and a place where we'll meet by and by so dry your tears don't you cry, we will live all our dreams in the sky."
With much love and admiration.
Your Sis,
Inez

B-nana

February 15, 2021
Dear Granny,

As a young boy, somehow “grandma” came out of my mouth as “b-nana” and stuck throughout my childhood.  You would always say, “That’s my grandson,” and I would always feel the pride behind those words even in your final years.

We didn’t really get a lot of time together as I started adulthood and moved away to college and you retired to Georgia. However, you still made it to the proudest moment of my life when I received my degree from Michigan. That familiar phrase was used a lot that day.

We exchanged many letters over the years between Michigan and Georgia and back to L.A. You also always included me in your love of shopping by sending some cool clothes if something caught your eye.

All that said, the times that I will remember and cherish the most are from two years ago when we wereblessed with the chance to reconnect and spend some time alone when you were temporarily staying with me. We would play cards, chat, laugh, cry, listen to jazz, and walkaround the Redondo Beach Pier to watch the ocean. I really got the chance to learn about you and your past. You shared the good and the bad and it really afforded me the opportunity to betterunderstand who you were. Turns out we actually had a lot in common.

My favorite day during that time was your second to last birthday. We took our usual walk to the beach. Then had Mexican food overlooking the water where you were given a silly birthday sombrero (you wore it proudly) as the staff at El Torito sang to you. We had a  cold beer as well and maybe(shh) a little sip of tequila (your favorite). Next, we went to the CAAM to view an Ernie Barnes exhibit because art was your first love. Finally, we sat in the rose garden and people watched and of course laughed a whole bunch. I will forever hold on to the memory of that day when I think of you. That’s how you will live on in my heart.

Love you always,

Your grandson
