Navy career

November 7, 2016

Enlisted in USNR during senior year of high school, 3 days after turning 17, with parent's permission, on 27 Oct 1964.  Went to 2 weeks of "boot camp" with buddies Ron Reichert and Duane Mandel, over Christmas/New Year school break, 1964/65.
Left for scheduled 2-year active duty period on 20 March 1966.  Assigned to USS McCLOY (DE-1038) in Newport RI as a Seaman.  Worked on deck force with boatswain's mates, in ship's laundry, in weapons office, and later in ship's office as a yeoman.  While aboard USS McCLOY visited Puerto Rico, Bermuda, and Virgin Islands.  Temporarity assigned to USS ARCADIA (AD-19) under treatment for an  illness from Feb to May 1967.  Reassigned back to USS McCLOY and advanced to Yeoman 3rd Class.  Ship moved to Boston Naval Shipyard in September 1967 for overhaul.  Was released from active duty on 20 Jan 1968, just as the USS PUEBLO was being captured by North Korea.  After driving home from Boston I did not unpack my seabag as I was anticipating being recalled, which never happened.  Our president did not mobilize any troops; just let North Korea take one of our ships and crew.  I enrolled at UNL for spring semester 1968, then moved to Omaha and attended UNO in the fall of 1968 and spring 1969.  I did 45 days of Temporary Active Duty (TEMAC) at the Naval Reserve Headquarters on Fort Omaha during summer 1968.  Married my sweetheart Joan Baumert, from Snyder, 26 April 1969.  Bought a house and began more TEMAC in summer on 1969.  Fall of 1969, reenlisted as a YN2 in Navy with a 4-year tour of duty planned at Fort Omaha.  By early spring 1973 the entire Navy unit at Fort Omaha was being moved to New Orleans, LA.  I decided to go back to sea duty and was assigned to USS WADDELL (DDG-24) in April 1973, while she was deployed to the western pacific.  Many ports of call included Subic Bay, in the Phillipines, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Guam, and Hawaii enroute to homeport of San Diego.  Joan and our children Brian and Jama moved there in August.  Another deployment in 1974 from March to October included many of the same ports in addition we went to Australia.  Many days underway without mail and fresh water.  Job was ship's secretary and captains yeoman.  1975 was an extended yard overhaul in Long Beach and rather than move my family there, I commuted on Mondays and Fridays for 11 months.  After sea trials in Spring of 1976, was transferred to recruiting duty in Phoenix AZ in April, as a YN1.  Promoted to YNC in September 1976 while stationed at Navy Recruiting Class A Station, Phoenix, as administrative chief.  In the spring of 1979 the prospects for my future assignments in the Navy would have been to Washington DC or overseas on unaccompanied tours.  I decided to not accept any more of that and was discharged in August.  Went to work for Dad and uncle Les at Dodge Implement in parts department until it closed in 1985.  I joined the Navy Reserve in 1980 and was assigned to the unit which supported Commander of Naval Forces Europe in London.  I did my annual 2-weeks training duty, along with a few extra ones, eleven times from 1982 to 1989.  Promoted to YNCS (E-8) meant transfer to a different reserve unit, a fleet hospital with hosptial corpsmen, nurses and doctors, and I as the only yeoman was it's admin chief.   Not being a hospital corpsman, I had to perform training duty in Korea, Japan, Washington DC, and New Orleans.  Promoted to YNCM (E-9) in 1991 and assigned to my final unit, a naval intelligence unit working at in the underground at Offut AFB.  Retired in June 1994 with about 12 years active duty and 18 years of reserve time.  Joan and I have lived in Howells since 1979.
