Glenn's Biography

February 26, 2014

Glenn Earle Robbins was born in Woonsocket, Rhode Island on February 3, 1947 to parents Fred and Lois Robbins, and older sister, Leslie. Woonsocket was the birth place of the entire Robbins family.

Glenn suffered from asthma as a child and his family moved to Arizona in 1949 in the hopes that the dry air would help his condition. But it didn't, so the family moved to southern California, where they stayed for the rest of Glenn's childhood and school years.

After high school and a brief stint at UCSB, Glenn came north to visit his friend, John Nava, in Lethbridge, Alberta.  He was so taken with Canada that he decided to move there.  He began his life in Canada working as a handyman at the University of Lethbridge.  He met Susan (Asplund) while working at the art department.

After Glenn and Susan married in 1973, he changed jobs and worked at the Lethbridge Iron Works.

Not long after they married, Glenn and Susan moved north to the 'bush' near Iron River, Alberta. They bought an uncleared half section of land and a one room shack with no power or running water. Over the twenty years that Glenn and Susan lived there, they worked together to build the Robbins family home.  During that time, Glenn also worked as the caretaker at Wolf Lake; a canter on the Wakulchyk Brothers Sawmill; and built and renovated several houses in the area. Although these jobs were very different, he enjoyed them all, learned so much from them and made lifelong friendships.

In October of 1979, their son Gregg was born.  Five years later, in September, their daughter Leah completed their happy family.

In the fall of 1995 the Robbins family moved to Bonnyville where they once again renovated and improved their home.  Glenn worked as a teacher's assistant at Duclos School, and built yet another house, before becoming a salesman at Nelson Lumber.  He worked there until he left the Bonnyville area. Once more, Glenn made many lasting friendships during his years with the company.

During a number of his years in Bonnyville, Glenn served on town council, and was briefly acting mayor.  He was also actively involved in the Anglican Church.

In 2007 Glenn and Susan moved back to southern Alberta to Nobleford.  Yet again they worked together to renovate and improve not only the home they lived in, but another smaller house in the town.  Once the bulk of the work was completed on their home, Glenn got a job at Windsor Plywood.   He absolutely loved his time there, and truly thought of his co-workers as family.

Glenn's family continued to grow over the last few years of his life.  In August 2009, Gregg and Jen Lund were married.  Glenn and Susan loved her like a second daughter from the beginning.  Glenn became a grandfather when Jen and Gregg's daughter, Gabrielle, was born.  It was another case of love at first sight!

The Robbins family grew yet again when Leah and Ryan Schreiber were married in September 2012.  Ryan was like a second son to Glenn and Susan from the get-go.

In the summer of 2013, Glenn was diagnosed with a rare blood disease called Amyloidosis.  He immediately began weekly treatments, but over the next several months his body failed to respond as positively as hoped.  Additional health issues compounded the problem and after a gallant effort, he lost the battle.

On February 24, 2014, Glenn passed away peacefully in his sleep.
