This memorial website was created in memory of my father, Glenn Gay. While he will be buried in a private ceremony, we know he was loved by so many and wanted to create a place where loved ones could connect, share memories, and reflect on a beautiful life that positively impacted us all.

Please see the thoughtful and comforting words below, extended to our family from Rev. Dr. Emanuel Cleaver III and the St. James United Methodist Church family. We pray that they bring about fond memories of a very special man that we were all so grateful to know.

With love,
Ashley

"To The Family of Glenn Gay:

“May the Messiah dwell in your hearts through faith. We pray that you being rooted and firmly established in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the length and width, height and depth of God’s love, and to know the Messiah’s love that surpasses knowledge, so you may be filled with all the fullness of God.” Ephesians 3:17-19

The pastors and members of St. James United Methodist Church in Kansas City, MO, extend heartfelt sympathy to your family during this difficult time in your lives.

We know that it is hard to imagine tomorrow when your loved one is gone; and even harder to realize that your lives must go on. Just be reminded that Jesus said in John 25, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die.” Therefore, be encouraged that this is not the end. Put your hand in the Master’s hand, and allow Him to lead you through this period of bereavement knowing that you can see Bro. Gay once again.

May it comfort you to know that we remember and cared for him. We are eternally grateful that the Lord brought him our way. His generous and willing spirit of service was apparent in every encounter with him. An active and beloved member of our helping ministry teams and others including the Ushers, Hospitality Team, the Food Pantry, VIM Team, choirs, Sunday School and Men’s Ministry, Glenn will be sorely missed. His presence alone was instrumental in making these efforts along with many other church wide and community gatherings both meaningful and memorable.

Although no words can really help ease the loss you bear, just know that Glenn’s St. James faith family has you lifted in our thoughts and prayers.

With heartfelt sympathy,
The St. James United Methodist Church Pastoral Staff and Congregation
Rev. Dr. Emanuel Cleaver III Senior Pastor"

I met your father through his volunteer time at Children's Mercy. He had such a kind and joyful spirit that brought so much comfort to the families that walked through our doors. These families and patients often arrive with a sense of stress and concern, and the minute they saw Glenn's helpful smile and the stickers he secretly kept stashed in his pocket for just the right kiddo a smile and sense of calm came over them. I remember the day he said he needed to step down from volunteering for a while. I didn't think it would be the last time I saw his smile or twinkle in his eyes. Today I discovered the news and want to tell his family and friends how much we adored Glenn. We at Children's Mercy considered him a part of our family. He was a gift to us and someone we will always remember that brought joy, love, and compassion in all he did while serving. While viewing the photos on this page of Glenn with his family and friends it was clear that the same love and passion for life we witnessed at the hospital he experienced through his time with his family and friends. You can see that same twinkle and love in these photos. He lived a life of purpose and love. Thank you for sharing your father with us. We miss him and pray for your healing during this loss. May you find comfort.

Sending our most heartfelt condolences to Ashley, Stacy, Marilyn and entire Gay family.

My husband, George Rucker, Jr., and Glenn served in Navy aboard the USS Enterprise together and were very good friends. Glenn was best man at our Wedding, 2005. There's not enough words to express how much George and I loved Glenn. When George was going through chemo Gary would show up for support at KCVA and he would supprise George at his radiation treatment. This was during months of August -Dec 2019. George and Gary would talk often but Oct until last night couldn't reach him. We knew something was wrong and I did Google... I met Glenn about 1980 in Kansas City and we became good friends. I had a lot of card parties back then at my apartment in Prairie Village, KS, and Glenn was one of my regulars. We laughed a lot and had big fun. I am posting a picture of him on this site, circa 1980. He was the first person I ever met from Philadelphia and I thought of him every time I visited there. Rest in peace, my friend.

I will miss you birthday month friend. Your smiling face is imbedded as a forever memory. I will miss your hugs as we entered the church on Sunday mornings and other times. Thanks for being the first person to lay tile in my bathroom and also tell me that I should use the large tile in my kitchen not small tile pieces. My husband Noah and daughter Courtney will miss you dearly.
To the family: Glen was loved at St. James. He took pride in being an usher, choir member, etc. Be encouraged!!!

Glenn, you will be especially missed. There wasn't a time that passed, where you alway's provided encouragement, during the rough times in my life, as well as when things were going well. Will miss our friendship and laughter. Now, you're an angel in God's court.

Forever missed. Grace and Peace to your Family.

Dear Ms. Daniels,

The Gentlemen of Distinction alumni would like to extend to you our deepest sympathies at the loss of your father, Mr. Glenn Gay.

Glenn was a charter member of the Gentlemen of Distinction. Our organization was established in 1981. During our active years, Glenn provided invaluable leadership and held a deep commitment to our purpose of giving. This dedication to service in large measure allowed us to contribute approximately $100,000.00 to numerous worthwhile charities throughout the Kansas City area.

Within the organization, Glenn was always thoughtful and the representative voice of reason. If our organization began to wane in its drive, Glenn would always passionately remind us of our mission of service and motivate us back toward our intended purpose.

Glenn was a messenger of faith, hope, brotherhood and community. He enriched all of us by his actions and words. He was in every sense, a truly remarkable man. Glenn will always remain in the memory of those who loved, respected and cared for him.

We can ensure you that every member of our alumni held Glenn with the greatest affection and respect. Please know that your grief is shared by many.
We hope you can find comfort in the many special memories you shared with your father.

Sincerely,

Gentlemen of Distinction Alumni

Glenn when I got the news of your homegoing it brought tears to my eyes. You were the most kind hearted, funny, smooth and just all loving person. I always looked forward to seeing you at church holding open the door when the choir was coming through. You were truly your own person, but so personable. If I didn't feel good you would always make me feel better. So not being able to see that warm face again greeting me will be sad, but it also makes me joyful to know you are with God. Take your rest soldier, you deserve it.

His Life

Obituary

October 11, 2020
Glenn Edward Gay was born February 6, 1947, the middle child of three children to the union of Samuel Gay and Marjorie Goodson in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His older brother, Samuel Gay Jr.; and both parents, Marjorie and Samuel Gay Sr., preceded him in death.

Glenn attended Overbrook High School and upon graduation served three years and four months in the U.S. Navy. After honorably discharging in 1968, he worked at Sisco’s Menswear; the first black owned clothing store in Philadelphia, selling haberdashery. Glenn resumed his education attending the Community College of Philadelphia and Lasalle University, where he ultimately attained his Bachelor of Science in Marketing and Management in 1976.

After college, he was employed by Merck and Co. Inc. holding numerous positions; the last being an executive professional representative selling pharmaceuticals and biologics. The sales position was the impetus for his move to Kansas City in November 1979. Following Merck, he was self-employed at “Tiles that Bond” a ceramic tiling contracting company. One of his first jobs was tiling work at Diana and Reverend Emmanuel Clever II’s home. A number of parishioners also contracted with Tiles that Bond.

Glenn had an unwavering love for family, a kind heart, a steadfast faith in God, and an infectious deep laugh that would brighten up any room. Glenn would help anyone, traits that he learned from his mother. Glenn volunteered at two local hospitals; Saint Joseph Medical Center and most recently, Children’s Mercy Hospital providing hospitality to families and patients. In Philadelphia, he attended Memorial Baptist Church and still had the Bible given to him after his baptism in 1956. While in Kansas City, he was a beloved member of St. James Methodist Church where he served on the senior usher board and male choir, the Master’s Men.

Glenn leaves to cherish his memories, two daughters, Stacy James of Philadelphia, PA and Ashley Daniels, of Kansas City, Missouri; his sister Marilyn Edney of Sicklerville, NJ; his grandchildren Shawn and Brooke, along with dear friends.

I always looked forward to seeing and sharing events with Glen on Sunday mornings before church started! We drank coffee, talked health and current events. To say the least, it started my Sunday off in a high measurement of praise and good family friendship! He got such a kick out of me talking about his choice of shoes and eye catching socks! He never disappointed!! Rest in God’s arms, my brother! See you on the other side.
