His Life

A beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, he was widely involved in his community.

Mr. Smith was born in Macon, Georgia on Saturday, August 21, 1915 to Harry Hamilton and Maude (Glenn) Smith and grew up in Auburn, Alabama. He attended the public schools of Auburn, Alabama and was an Eagle Scout. In 1936 he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Engineering from Alabama Polytechnic Institute (Auburn University) where he was a member of the Sigma Nu Fraternity and the Blue Key, Scabbard and Blade Honor Societies. Upon graduation, Mr. Smith began his career at Batson-Cook Company where he was employed for 50 years. During his time at Batson-Cook he served as Corporate Secretary and Assistant Treasurer and was a member of the Board of Directors. He proudly served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and attained the rank of Lt. Colonel during his service. Mr. Smith was an active member of West Point First United Methodist Church where he served as secretary to the administrative board for several years and was a member of the Wesley Men's Sunday School Class. He was involved in a variety of organizations in West Point. Mr. Smith was a member of the West Point Lions Club for sixty years, where he served at one point as president and director. He also served on the Board of Governors of the Georgia Business and Industry Association and as treasurer of the West Point Chapter of the American Red Cross, chairman of the West Point Welfare Association and chairman of the West Point District of the Boy Scouts of America and in numerous roles in other local clubs and charities.

Mr. Smith was preceded in death by Ruby Jackson Smith, his wife of 22 years, siblings William H. Smith and Elizabeth Smith Wilder; and great-grandchildren Jackson Glenn Bell and Ava Morgan Smith.

He is survived by his second wife of 36 years, Clare Rocket Neese Smith; son, Harry Glenn Smith of Marietta, Georgia; daughter, Marian Smith Long of Stone Mountain, Georgia; and his stepchildren, Peggy Neese Carlson (John) of Tallahassee, Florida and Paul Van Neese (Patti), of Gainesville, Georgia. He also leaves behind nine grandchildren: Alicia Long, Joanna Long Bell (Chris), Abby Smith, Michael Smith (Jessica), Karen Smith and their mother Jane Smith; John Dennis Carlson Jr. (Paula), Justin Paul Carlson (Sandy), Paul Van Neese IV, Helen Nicole Neese and six great grand-children.
