I never had the chance to meet Gloria in person, but after watching all the wonderful pictures and hearing about her life, I really believe she must have been an amazing woman. Looking so much forward to see her again in the resurrection. Thank you again Karen for inviting me. Continue to stay close to Jehovah, and do never give up. The resurrection and reunion is just around the corner. Job 14: 13-15, Rev. 21: 4, Acts 24: 15, and John 5: 28, 29.

Reading all the stories and tributes makes me wish I had a grandma Gloria in my life. My spiritual heritage started with my wonderful parents, but having a grandmother like Gloria would’ve been a blessing to cherish! I look forward to meeting her and maybe gleaning a few cooking tips!

"No greater joy do I have that this that my children go on walking in the Truth" ( 3 John:4)
Gloria continued to have that joy through out her life!
The challenges and hurdles she successfully negotiated with implicit trust and reliance on Jehovah, and the outstanding love of family, friends , and congregations testify to her love, faith, and endurance.
So many times as she pitched in at numerous events to assist in preparation or clean up, all of us had a good example "that love does not look for its own interest"
Gloria is not only my treasured Sister but a Friend who embraced me as one of the family. A gift beyond measure!
I shall be first in line to welcome her back in the oh so near joyful future as Jehovah's love will once again cement and enhance our privilege to serve him forever under the ultimate conditions where 'death , mourning, outcry & pain will be no more' ( Rev 21:3-5)
Sleep Dear Sister in the safest place, Jehovah's memory ! Cradled where the wicked one can no longer strive to undermine you love of Jehovah, your family and life. Indeed you have proved him to be what he is a LIAR! But Jehovah the God of love and justice and unfathomable love. The "book" has your name entered! ( Mal 3:16)

I’ve never met Mrs. Schaefer but I love her granddaughters Bethany and Heidi very much. I know that she that she helped mold them into what they became…beloved, kind, socially aware people who leave others refreshed after spending time with them. I’ve heard sweet and funny stories about “Grams” over the years. I look forward to having a glass of wine with her when we can all be together very soon!

A Champion of others...

A few months ago grandma told me a story that really impressed me, but did not surprise me. When grams was in grade school her class joined another class of students for their music instruction. When the classes sang, they were instructed to hold hands. One black boy was part of the other class, and no one wanted to hold his hand - and some students actively moved away from him. Grandma saw this happening, and from that time on made it a point to try to enter the room first for music class so that she could be next to this boy and make sure to grab his hand first. I'm impressed that she saw this happening at such a young age, and took action to alleviate someone's suffering. Being a champion of others that needed help was a hallmark of grandma's life. It also is something her children imitate - being alert to others that need help. Many have told me of how grams and her children have quietly provided help to them in times of need.

If I could pick my mother-in-law, I would choose Gloria. I first saw her in 1968 in her hot white Cadillac with Beth in the front seat. My immediate thought was - what a beautiful woman. Later she would welcome me to her family when I married her son, Mark, in 1973.
Gloria lived her life in an abundance of love for God and her family. Grace, compassion, and empathy were all hallmarks of her life. She accepted the challenges life presented, some very difficult, with perseverance and without complaint. She leaned on Jehovah and taught her children to do the same.
Gloria was ahead of her time when it came to nutrition and skin care, leading to several successful businesses. She raised four amazing children. While raising her family, though having a smaller house (1 bathroom), and a family of 7, she took in children, adults, and disabled adults until they were able to get back on their feet, with Don’s support. She never looked for recognition, praise, or repayment of any sort. There was no shortage of heart, and if her glass was half full she shared what she had.
However, there was one thing Gloria would not tolerate-disobedience in her children. There are many humorous stories of her disciplining her 4 kids. They remember that if one “got it” they likely all would for something they had done the day before, thinking they had gotten away with it. My father-in-law was asked how they raised such nice kids. He quickly replied: “Gloria stayed home with the children.” They all appreciate her devoted care.
So although my heart feels a great loss, I am thankful that Gloria left a legacy of a person you could bear your soul to, compassion, kindness and empathy without judgment. She was welcoming, hospitable, a fabulous cook and baker. She was known for her ability put a spread on the table in lightening speed. She was a beautiful woman on the inside and out. I will always think of her blazing through Emerald Hills in her white Cadillac. She loved Jehovah, her family, and life.

By Barbara (92 years old) to Gloria (One of Mom’s dearest friends)
Written just before Mom died. Mom took great comfort from the poem

YOU SHALL ENDURE
With heart so pure,   You will endure,   Through trials Satan brings
When times are rough,  You must be tough,  And house a heart that sings!
Love for our God is never hard,   Pray always you’ll remain,
His faithful slave, by being brave,   Dream dancing in the rain!
Tho’ now we can’t,   Do not say Shan’t,  For soon my dearest Friend,
With Satan gone,   We’ll dance right on,    With life that will not end!

GLORIA and ME

‘Cause I knew her, and She knew me’,
Both of us could clearly see
The need to take a faithful stand
By trusting God to hold our hand
While sharing Truth that set us free
‘I knew her well and She knew me!’

Through days of joy, and often tears,
Our friendship lasted 70 years
Life had for us it’s many woes
So many thorns for every rose
Our thoughts, so often would agree,
‘Cause I knew her and She knew me’,

Now her peaceful sleep has come,
Soon of which she’ll waken from,
When Jesus reign will set her free,
Then ‘I’ll know her, and She’ll know me!’
Friends for all Eternity!!

Her Life

~~ OUR BELOVED MOM ~~

May 26, 2021
These are some memories we have of our dear Mother.

We fondly remember her strong faith, devotion and loving care. She wanted us to grow up to be faithful servants of Jehovah, giving us the guidance we needed to keep us on the right path leading to life. We will never forget the scripture that she continually impressed upon us as we were growing up ~ that “Love never fails”. Well, she lived that scripture in her life as she taught so many Jehovah’s loving ways.

She was an outstanding teacher. Starting with her first child Karen, while having baby Mark and toddler Donna, she took the time to teach 4 year old Karen phonetics and how to sound out words, all in preparation for Kindergarten and beyond. Mom taught us to be clean, courteous, and hardworking by her example.

We remember with gratitude how she prepared for our first International Convention at Yankee Stadium in New York in 1958. She washed and ironed clothes for three children and two adults ~ 8 outfits each ~ one for each of the 8-day Convention. They were carefully packed in boxes that served as a platform to make a bed in the back of our Studebaker. Our month long journey ended with camping in Yosemite, which was an annual family tradition. Mom had ingeniously designed and sewed by hand compartments that fit on the back of the front seat. We each had a pocket to put our favorite toys and books. We put a magazine or song book in our car window, hoping to attract fellow Witnesses who were also on their way to the Convention. We still remember how excited we were as we waived and honked while passing by each other.  We are so thankful to our self-sacrificing Mom and Dad, who, in their twenties had saved up for a year to be able to make the trip, feeling the importance of putting spiritual things first. It gave us a faith-strengthening spiritual heritage.

Mom and Dad had an open-door household. They were always ready to help those in need and never turned anyone away. Instead, Mom made them feel welcome. As a result, we had many different people who were in need stay with us. It taught us mercy, kindness and generosity. It also taught us that there is always enough and that Jehovah’s hand is never short. When friends  and family would drop by at dinner time, which seemed to happen a lot, somehow, Mom would add to our meal, with always plenty for all.  She was a fabulous cook and no one could get a meal on the table faster than her.

Mom was analytical in figuring out problems. She didn’t take the path of least resistance but instead, would forge ahead till she found a viable solution. When it came to nutrition, Mom was way ahead of her time, though we didn’t appreciate it then. During the white ‘Wonder Bread’ era, we would be bringing  a lunch of homemade Molasses bread for our sandwiches and organic milk in our thermos. Certainly not fitting in during the ‘50’s,which helped make us the ‘odd-kids-out’ at school. Mom made a trek every week with all of us loaded in the car to procure organic produce from a fruit and vegetable stand miles away from our home. She always wanted the best for us.

Mom was a dear friend to everyone. Growing up as a teenager till now, many of our friends would tell us they ‘wished she was their Mom too’. She took a genuine interest in everyone whom she met, and even up to the last, she never lost interest in keeping track of everyone and everything going on.

She never stopped being a Mom and Grandma. She loved all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren so much. And when you married into the family, you are now truly one of her children or grandchildren. Even at 91, when she could do nothing physically for her children or grandchildren, she would be thinking about our welfare and give us some wise advice, hoping to ensure that everyone was ok.

She was known to her grandchildren as ‘Big Grandma’, due to her being married to their rather large ‘Big Grandpa’. In her later years, because she was still glamorous in dress and jewelry, her granddaughters called her ‘Glamma’. Toward the end, they called her ‘Grams’.

In her final years, after settling Mom into bed, we would recite several scriptures together that she found comforting, and then say a prayer. She always wanted to make sure we prayed for individual family members or friends who were having difficulties,or for family that hadn’t come to know Jehovah yet. Whenever there was a problem, she would say, ‘let’s pray’.
The week before she died, she shared with tears how she had always prayed to Jehovah that she could give to her children the most important thing in her life ~ that being ‘The Truth’. Well, Mom and Dad succeeded in raising four children who love and serve our God Jehovah. We can say, job well done Mom!

It would take many more pages to enumerate all she has done for us and others. We are so thankful for our Mom and love her so much The memories she has given us are priceless. When we grow up, we want to be like Mom, sans the strict discipline (another story.....).

We miss our Mother so much. We can’t wait to get our Mom back in the Paradise where we will welcome her as the strong, vibrant, and beautiful woman that she was and make new memories for all Eternity.......

Written With Love, From Her Children
