Brilliant, Humane, Jovial, & Loyal

April 21, 2019

Kene, Godwin's son, remembers him as a brilliant physicist and meteorologist who attended Government College, Umuahia from 1946 to 1951, University College, lbadan from 1951 to 1957, and Imperial College, London for his postgraduate studies in meteorology from 1957 to 1959.

He was tasked with the indigenization of the Meteorological department at Independence, serving as its mentoring officer at Lagos and Kano International airports until the breakout of the war in 1967. He fled from Kano to Eastern Nigeria with his family during the hostilities, and returned to the service in 1970, immediately after the war.

With the disruptions of the war, he rose to become an assistant director in the Nigerian Meteorological Service before his sudden death on April 19, 1979.

Daddy, as his kids fondly called him, was a well traveled man, as occasioned by his membership of the World Meteorological Organization, and always had momentos of his trips to Switzerland, UK, Canada, the US, and the Caribean Islands.

Despite all his accomplishments, he remained a faithful family man, guiding and educating his extended family as the opportunities arose. He was fervent in advising all who cared to listen that education is the foundation to true and lasting development.

Daddy, we miss you!

(More to come).
