I first met Gordon in 2006. He was a client in my resale store in Indio California. Our mission supported addicted individuals who needed help with a focus on young and new expectant mothers. Gordon was a retail client and a generous donor of exquisite merchandise that would bring large revenues to help young mothers and their children escape the horrors of drug addiction, alcohol abuse and the associated family dysfunction that dominates the nightmare. He donated thousands of dollars. He also donated many unique personal possessions such as an exquisite buffet that he received from Elizabeth Taylor. The dollars from these sales paid for residence, professional help, legal guidance and the ultimate goal of putting families on the road to recovery and productive happy lives. His affable and friendly demeanor endeared him to our staff. He and I shared a little common history. My parents met while working at Technicolor Gordon's realtor in the Los Angeles area was the daughter of Rosemary Castelli who was my Mother's best friend. On top of witnessing Gordon's generosity, I was gifted with stories of people who pioneered an industry. Those people did not float above the crowd. They shared their good fortune with little regard for credit or acknowledgement. The days when celebrity and recognition also meant, my success comes from those around me. Gordon was a kind loving man. Cheers to his memory.

I was happy to have met Gordon. I am so sorry about Gordon’s passing. My deepest condolences to his family. I had the pleasure of meeting his youngest son. He loved his entire family. I am a real estate out here in La Quinta and we would look at properties and keep in contact throughout the years since about 2006. I had left him a few messages on his cellular. So I decided to find out where he is. May God Rest His Soul.

I had the good fortune of knowing Gordon in the late 70s when I sold land in Bell Canyon on the west end of the San Fernando Valley. Gordon recognized me as a talented young land salesman and he quickly made a deal with me to partner on properties when I recognized a good deal. I remember his yellow Jenkins. My favorite thing to do was driving out to a movie location to have him sign some papers. Being a kid from the Midwest it was always a thrill to be on a movie location. He had an office at Culver City Studios and when I had a relative visiting from home I would call Gordon and he would leave a word for me at the gate which allowed me and my guest to roam the lot freely. My guests were thrilled at who they saw and some of the sets we were able to hang out on during filming. I would say to Gordon , "Gordon I want to be in the movie business, get me a job," and he would say "Jeff your a successful young man, I am out of work after every movie, you don't want to be in this business." Gordon was one of the nicest, most down-to-earth people I ever met. I take great pride in the fact that we were good friends. What a lucky family you are to have had in your life.

Gordon was a Season Box holder here at Santa Anita for many years. He would stop by each time with a "hello" and story of his wonderful family or new adventure he was having. We got to know Gordon pretty well.
In life, you meet very few wonderful, fun, interesting people. Gordon was one of those special people.
Still waiting for you to pop in like you use to.....We miss you.

Thank you for introducing me to the Movie Industry. And thanks to Harrison for hiring our grandson, Jo Jo into the business. Even our son George had a short stint in the business.

We had some very good times together over the years. The trips to Oregon and our family visit to Chiloquin, where you were taught to "hang a spoon". Our wonderful time in Montana with all the dogs.

Our days at Santa Anita to celebrate the Derbies that celebrated my birthday on May 8th, 1937, when War Admiral won the race.

You were and always will be, a friend and our family will miss you.

I hope there are no MAGA hats where you are!

In the 1990's Jeanne and I decided to compete in Cowboy Action Shooting. You shoot two pistols, a rifle and shotgun and it is a timed event. All guns are pre 1800 and dress is of the same time period. I competed in Frontier Cartridge Duelist and Jeanne as Ladies Frontier Cartridge, both being black powder categories, just like the old days. Everyone uses an alias and we asked Gordon if we could use his parents names. We had known Rose and found her an intelligent, loving and dignified lady. While we never met Harry, we believed that Gordon was just like him. One of the people we shot with was related to Wild Bill Hickok and the connection to Harry and Rose Webb gave us a connection to the old west. Gordon was happy to allow us to use his family names and he gave us detailed histories of their movie careers that we incorporated accurately into our characters. Harrison helped us find and frame original movie posters, that we put at the entrance and on the walls of our theater.  In many ways a shrine to the Webb family and their connection to the old west. We got a German shepherd that Jeanne trained for live recovery specializing in children. He would go to every match with us and appeared in several television shows and magazine pictorials. Gordon swore he was Rin Tin Tin resurrected (I had to look this up to spell it correctly) and we gave him the alias of King the Wonder Dog after the dog in Harry and Rose's serial. I even got the logo of their old studio on my loading block. Over the years Harry and Rose won many local and State matches. In 2019 Rose Webb won our Regional Champion in her class and among the top ten at the World Championship. In 2016 and 2019 Harry won top ten in his class at the World Championship. Together Harry and Rose won many costume contests. On several occasions Gordon was going to join us National Matches as a guest celebrity talking about western movies at the banquet that always followed but something always came up. It saddens us deeply that that opportunity has passed forever.

Grandpa what an amazing life you had and truly lived. It baffles me every day just how loved your were by friends and family alike and what a large part of our lives you truly were. The hole left behind by your passing can never be filled, those boots are just to large. But the lessons on life and love you have taught us will live on with me and all of us for the rest of our lives. When my time comes if I can be surrounded by friends and family the way you were with friends coming over to hop right into the bed , listening to and telling stories with big old smiles content in just basking in the unconditional love in the room as you had , I will know that, like you, I did enough right and can leave this earth as you did with no regrets and with a heart full of love and joy. You will always be in my heart and my thoughts every day for the rest of my life.

Love,
Harrison

No Work & Didn't Forget the Ole Wallet- Grandpa are you ok?

February 11, 2021
There are so many stories when I reminisce about Gordon but one of the first that comes to mind while writing this with a big smile on my face is the following:

As many of us know, quite often when a tab would come at the end of dinner with Gordon, he would either be "heading to the restroom" or "conveniently left his wallet at home". This had become a such a running theme that it  became an "inside"  family joke where anyone who truly knew Gordon and was planning on taking him out to lunch or dinner knew that they were most likely paying. I had told these stories for years to my in-laws before they met Gordon about how gracious and loving my grandfather could be, that he wasn't necessarily cheap when it came to many things but by all means don't expect him to pay for dinner. On top of this story line I had been giving to my in- laws was the second most infamous story line which was Gordon putting you to work. It did not matter if you were coming over for a 5 min. visit or a weekend stay at the desert house, if there was work to be done he would enlist your services willing or unwilling. Before you knew it you would be changing light bulbs, planting cactus, replacing water heaters, etc. There was no task to big or to small to engage your help in. On my in-laws first trip down to the desert and one of their first times meeting my grandfather, they were going into this weekend vacation in La Quinta with a storyline of my grandfather that I had built up for them years in the making. Low an behold we get to the desert to start are weekend siesta and.............nothing. We spent the weekend swimming in the pool, feeding the fish in the lake, watching tv, barbequing, enjoying life and no one was put to work. To add insult to injury on my stories, on our second night in the desert Gordon takes us all out to one of his favorite restaurants in La Quinta. We order so much food and drink that I was to say less than thrilled about the tab that was coming, which I knew I was going to pay for. When the dinner winds down and it comes time for the check, Gordon does not shuffle off to the restroom. In fact he is the first at the table to pull out his wallet and pay for the entire meal. (I think at this point in the weekend I was equal parts confused and questioning if I was dreamin). At the conclusion of the trip I will never forget the drive home with my in-laws. My father in-law let me have it. "For years you have been telling me about your grandfather. I envisioned someone so different. I have never met a more gracious man and what an amazing weekend, you are so lucky to have such a generous and gracious grandfather." At the time I had never looked more foolish. I remember not having much to say that ride back as I was in just as much shock as he was. I had to bide my tongue at that time. Although that trip went much differently  than anyone expected, in the years to come after that weekend my father in law, who happens to be a plumber, would ultimately come to learn that my words rang true about being put to work by Gordon. I often times think back on that trip and and the sentiment of what my father in-law said to me that day and it sticks with me. For all of Gordon's faults and flaws, I will always remember the vast amount of good times we had and how truly lucky I was to have a grandfather who loved and cared for me and my family in the way that he did.

First Meal with Gordon

February 9, 2021
I have hundreds of stories about my friendship with Gordon but most all of them contain hints of confidential information that is it not my place to reveal.  One of my favorite that I can tell was in the early years of our friendship of over forty years.  It was 1981 and I was a third year law student working at a Century City Law Firm when I was tasked with preparing for a trial representing Gordon.  Working for Gordon was glorious not laborious because he was engaging, smart and honest (and a little obsessive).  After several months he invited me to have lunch with him at the Fox Commissary.  He advised me that while the dining room was beautiful and full of movie history, he didn't like eating there because want to be's hire people to come over and make a big deal about them so they can be noticed.  I assured him that I was not interested in being noticed so no worries.  He arranged a lot pass and we went to our table and continued our discussions about his litigation between stories about Arness, Raymond Burr, Mel Brooks, his father, Rose, wives and children.  It was one of the most enjoyable meals I ever had until in a loud woman's voice, almost screaming, came the words "OH MY GOD, IT'S ELLIOT KAPLAN!!!"  The room went silent, I sat there like a deer in the headlights as Gordon sank slowly in his chair and gave that stare that was uniquely his with his chin down on his chest and looking through the top of his glasses glairing at me.  It was my friend Elizabeth Whitney (who would succeed Jesse Unruh as State Treasurer on his death).  We had worked for Jesse in the 1970's when he ran for Treasurer.  I went on to law school and we hadn't spoken for years.  All the suits came over and said hello to Gordon and wanted to shake my hand, a nobody then and in their future.  But Gordon never believed me that I didn't set it up.
