Laughter thru the Pain

February 18, 2020
Oh gosh I have so many memories of Gordon, just as I believe everyone who knew him, does too. My mother was in a car wreck, placed in SICU at Baptist Montclair Hospital, the year was 1983, the same year Gordon fell off Bald Rock Mtn., breaking his back. Mama's neck was broke, causing her to be a quadriplegic and survival not looking promising, the staff was kind allowing us to spend any amount of time with her, rather than requiring the regular ICU visitation times. In comes Gordon and they place him in the room right next to her. Being on a bed requiring him to lay upside down, I spent countless hours lying on the floor talking to him. I'd cry for mama, stop in the next room and slide under that bed for a laugh. I've never given any thought to the pain he must've been in, I just knew he'd ease mine. Selfish as that may sound, we discussed many things...remember our bodies were adult, however we still had the minds of teens. Once he was moved to a private room, I would still make those trips, and finally got to sit in a chair. Over the years I've often wondered, was I there for him or was he there for me? My mother wasn't lucky enough to make it home, but Gordon and I remained friends, until adulthood takes you in different directions. I'll forever remember our talks, laughs, tears and friendship.
