Gordie was a long time friend and colleague of mine at AHS. I often went to him in his counselor role to ask help from him about a student or an issue with scheduling or a mathematics curriculum question or just to talk with him. I know he always had the well-being of his students and the teachers high on his list of concerns. He had the knack of scheduling students and classes better than anyone I ever knew. He tackled scheduling as a challenge to get at least 95% of the requests of students, teachers, and administrators to work effectively and he most often was at least 99% successful. I enjoyed his friendship, his stories, his family, teaching his children and learning about his hunting adventures. We also shared many topics in mathematics over a lunch table or in his office. I always felt that he made time for anyone who needed him. He was a very caring and giving person and I have missed being around him since he retired. I am so glad I got to see him at the retirement parties at Ponchos since I retired. I looked up to him with respect and gratitude and will miss him tremendously.

So very sorry to hear about Gordy's passing. I taught with Gordy at SWCS and we became very close friends. We shared many adventures especially his love for his students and Trojan Wrestling. He was the Best Man at our wedding. He will be sorely missed by his many students, friends, and especially me. He was always willing to help no matter what and when he left SWCS we realized how much he did for us. I have nothing but very positive memories of our times together. He was definitely one of the GOOD ones!

I grew up with the Puls family as a neighbor down the road! As the oldest Guertin girl, I followed the activites of the Puls family, and by coincidence, Barb Puls Mattison bought our family home on 9 Gifford following the passing of our Mom, Doris Guertin. Doris and Ethel Puls were long time friends, playing tennis together many a summer morning.
My oldest son, Tom, and his family rented the Puls home, they called the Lake House, for many summers, and so in recent years, I have spent many enjoyable times at the Puls Lake House. Tom now works in Canton, Ohio and lives in Akron, another connection!
And so, many happy memories flood my mind as I remember Gordy and our neighborhood.  Thinking of all the family and all the connections.

I'm so sorry to hear about Gordie. He shared a love for the outdoors with me. He was someone I could count on when I needed help or advice with problems concerning students, curricula, and administrators. Gordie was a levelheaded problem solver for AHS and the district.
I also remember that if it wasn't for Gordie, I would have had the messiest desk at AHS.
He was a good man.

I'm Michael Marstrell's dad and I would like say that Gordy was good to me and am glad to have known him. Gordy was special to me because we shared the love of hunting and hunting stories. He took a lot of time to show Michael and I how to dress and butcher our deer in his shed no matter how cold it was. I was always amazed how he could handle the cold, while I hid the fact that I felt I was dying of frostbite, he calmly talked though the whole process. I'm glad too we got to take him snapper hunting together at Hulbert Lake in Michigan, it was really fun. Thank you Gordy!

My coach!

April 23, 2020
I feel so sorry to learn that Mr Puls passed away due to the coronavirus. He was such a good guy!
I am thinking I had him for Math at Southwestern in 8th grade but I’m not sure if he taught 8th gr math?? But I did have him as our basketball coach at SWCS for girls’ intermurals. Us junior girls, the Real Lemons, beat the senior girls, the Eager Beavers. I have a large photo of our team with Mr Puls. We were wearing men’s boxer shorts! It was so much fun and Mr Puls was the best! We could make him blush and laugh and I remember him as a patient, quiet and humble man.
From his obituary I see he was married in 1970 the year I graduated from SWCS. I’m sure he will be missed by all those he touched.

Mr. P

I grew with Emily and spent many of my formative years playing games, doing girl scout activities and other such silly things at the Puls house. Mr. P was nothing but kind. When I got older and had him as high school counselor he definitely help set my directional course in life. He was a good man. I am sad to know of his passing and I wish lots of love to his family during this time.
