Her Life

I'm wonderful

September 18, 2016

“Wonderful” was a word that Grace used many times on the last day of her life. In fact, her last words in response to her caregiver Joey's question as to how she was doing were “I’m wonderful.” An hour after those last words, in the middle of the night, Grace Cooper passed away in her sleep. She was 93.

Amazing Grace

Grace had pneumonia in 2013. After a stay in the hospital and a nursing home, Grace’s family moved her into a board and care residence in Palm Desert called Britannia Lodge.

Grace adjusted well in time to living at Britannia Lodge. She was very happy for the three and a half years that she lived there. Her caregivers loved her very much and took wonderful care of her. They called her Amazing Grace.

Grace's religious/spiritual life

September 16, 2016

Grace was a very spiritual person. She was raised in a Christadelphian household and was baptized into Christ at a very young age. She was age 12, almost 13, when she was baptized. Grace’s faith was strong from a young age, and she was faithful until the day she died.

While Grace was a teenager, she started a publication called “The California Sun,” which was sent to Christadelphian young people all over the world. Many Christadelphians knew of the name Grace (or Gracie) Blunt.

When she was 14, Gracie was featured in a book called Jehovah Jireh, which was written by Bro. Frank Walker. Her mother Ethel Blunt was featured as well, and there are photos of both of them in the book.

At the top of her class

September 16, 2016

Grace: “I did moderately well at my studies. 4th grade was a turning point for me. The teacher, Mrs. Williams, was a motherly, heavy set woman. One day she gave me a great big hug. It was wonderful. From then on, I was at the top of my class."

Trip to England at age 8

September 16, 2016

One of the highlights of Grace’s childhood was when her family went on a trip to England to visit their relatives when she was 8 years old. Some of Grace’s happiest memories were on that trip from California by train across the U.S., to the ocean voyage by ship across the Atlantic Ocean, and on land once in England.

Grace's Birth

September 16, 2016

Grace Blunt was born on July 13, 1923 at home on Pueblo Street in Santa Barbara, California. Her parents were William Blunt and Ethel Booth. Grace’s parents were both born in England and met in Canada before moving to the United States.

Grace had no middle name. Apparently her parents had planned to give her the middle name of Mildred and were going to call her Millie, but no middle name was put on her birth certificate so she was known as Grace, which was such a fitting name for her.

At the time Grace was born, she was the youngest of three children. Her brother was named Frank, and she had a sister named Kathleen. Sadly Kathleen died as a child.
