It takes a village to raise a child. That is a well-known adage. The news of your passing, antie Grace, came to me with a lot of sadness, and walked me through the memory lane of growing up in Shell Camp Owerri. You were there to help guide us children lest we would have walked astray. Your occasional summons help put discipline into us. You looked out for us as young kids, and when something wasn't right, you would let our parents know immediately so as not to hurt ourselves. You were a big influence in our community and helped to nuture us. Who dared not listen to your advice? Of the wiser or the misinformed? Even when we played our hearts out in B128 premises till dusk, you were there in the balcony watching over us. Your motherly protection gave us confidence. Eventually, we turned out right! Now I know why they say it takes a village to raise a child! My thoughts and prayers remain with the Okeke family, and to the Apakamas. Rest on until we meet to part no more.

Dear mama,

It’s so sad that you’re gone. We were not expecting you to leave so soon. I’ll miss the times you’d force me to eat and learn Igbo, and the many times you were excited about me finishing medical school and becoming your personal doctor.

I know you’re in a better place now and I hope you’ve found everlasting peace.

We love you mama.

Tribute to Aunty Grace

Yes, Hon Grace Ego Okeke was “Aunty Grace” to me.

No, she didn’t need more children to care for, but she always welcomed
me to her home with open arms during my early years in Owerri and a
loving heart. She was generous with her smile and hospitable. She was
an awesome cook.

I will always happily remember the few times I was an honorary member
of her family in Owerri . My prayers are with the Okeke family

Adieu Aunty Grace, may your soul rest in peace.

"Grandma passed away"

These three words felt like a dagger to the chest, knowing that you are gone. But I know you will never be forgotten. I know for a fact that I will never forget you and how much you've impacted my life. Not only that, but everyone that knew you adored you so much and they will miss you to pieces.

As I traveled down memory lane, I remembered all the good times we've shared, and I can't help but miss you every day. So grandma, I promise to always keep your memory alive and all the things that you have taught me to become a better, loving, and humble person just like you are. You may have passed on, but your memories will always live on within us.

Thank you for your sacrifices, your care and concern, your love and everything that you have done for me. Wherever you are, I know you are in a much better place. I will be forever grateful and thankful that you are not only my grandma but you have been the best mom on earth and the love of a grandma is unique. God must have given grandmothers to us to liven up our lives, to make our lives more complete, to make us well rounded and better human beings. You played a big part in my childhood. You have never been just ‘my grandmother’, but my guardian, my friend, my mother and my inspiration.

Rest In Peace mommy.

Your loving grandson, Chika

Mama (My Forever Young Lady)

Am I angry you left? No. I'm sad I didn't get to say a final goodbye, but I'm okay with it because I know you left peacefully and you are resting now.

I choose to hold on to the happy memories and let go of all the pain. The times you would force me to eat (especially boiled egg, although you never ate it) with your walking stick, calling me skinny. The hailing, dancing and calling me NELENMA (because we all know I’m the finest in the family). All the sweet homemade peanuts and twisted chin-chin. The special Sunday lunches (white rice and tomato stew with fat chicken) in Ufuma. All the fresh pots of Onugbu soup and freshly boiled corn with Ube (mummy’s best friends).

You will be missed but never forgotten. I can promise you one thing, my sisters and I will never stop telling your stories.

Say hi to Aunty Uche, Uncle Mamadi, Uncle Njinji, Papa Owerri and let them know we love and miss them so much.

Thank you for being one of my guardian Angels.

          GOD HAS BEEN SO KIND

The death of your very dear wife, Hon. Grace Ego Okeke of Otochara Ogbo Uvume Egbe-na-Diji age grade of Ufuma, Oruba North LGA leaves a vacuum very difficult to fill. Where do we find a replacement of the ‘dedicated mother and teacher of children’. What an immense loss but God has called her to a better place.

On earth God blessed her with a caring husband, children, relations and in-laws that gave her the will to go happily through life’s exit challenges. Your dear wife was dutiful, dependable and trustworthy. We pray to the Almighty God to give her eternal life in one of those mansions in ‘Our Father’s House’.

I knew this day was coming, sooner than later.

When I heard the news about your passing, the first thing I felt was relief. It didn’t come as a shock to me. And I thought to myself, finally she can get some rest. For the past few years mama had been falling sick every now and then and it got worse each time. I was always away at school so I never really understood how bad it had gotten till I came home after the pandemic. And that’s when I saw her. She was laying on the bed and she looked so small and brittle. I could see it in her eyes, I could see how much pain she was in, I could hear it in her quiet voice. I didn’t know who I was looking at. This wasn’t the mama Ufuma I knew.

My grandma was strong, assertive, independent and bold. I didn’t know who this woman that lay before me was. I hated seeing you this way, but what I hated most of all was seeing you in pain. You were in so much pain mama and it killed me to watch you. I didn’t want to see you this way, I didn’t want to remember you this way. Everytime I came to your room to tend to you, you would look me in the eyes and say “Nne I’m tired, please tell your mother that I’m tired” and I would look away and tell you not to worry, that it would get better soon.

My mom, my sweet mother, your wonderful daughter, she fought so hard for you. She loved you more than I think the both of you realized. She did everything in her power to keep you here with us. To have some more moments with you, to talk to you, to make memories with you, she just wanted you to hold on a little bit longer. She didn’t want to loose anymore people in her life. She loved you so much mama, she really did.

You were my biggest cheerleader mama. Always asking me about my academics and encouraging me. You would call me a genius and praise me. You were always there to support me. You would call me "Beyibe my doctor". I’m sad you won’t get to watch me graduate. I’m sad you won't get to see the small things I’ll do in life and praise me like I’ve broken the world record. I’m sad you never got to teach me how to make your homemade chin chin and peanuts. I’m sad that you won’t be there to force me to drink Coke and have a second plate of rice when I come to Ufuma for our little visits.

The last time I saw you hugged you tightly, as if I felt it would be the last time. I only regret not telling you that I loved you because I love you mama, with all my heart. And I hope you knew that. I’m sad you’re gone and I’ll miss you so much. I hope you’re resting now mama, I hope you’re in a place where there’s no pain or hurting. I hope you’re no longer tired. Bye mama

Tribute to an extraordinary woman who embodied faith and love, Hon. Grace Ego Okeke

Mummy Ego, we the women of Holy Trinity Church Ufuma are saddened and grieving your demise. The news came to us as a rude shock because we never envisaged that you would be leaving us so soon. But all the same, we give our merciful God all the glory and thanksgiving for your life.

Mummy you were our matron, mentor, leader and pillar to the association. You allowed our good Lord to use you for the progress and growth of the Association and HTC, Ufuma at large. Though most times your zeal and passion were misunderstood, you never allowed it to deter you from doing the right thing.

A virtuous woman who speaks with wisdom and faithful instruction is on her tongue (Prov 31:26).

You taught us how to give to God and humanity through your financial contribution to the Association and yearly donations to the widows through the Cherechukwu foundation. You also proved that love and discipline go together, because you did not hesitate to chastise us when we did wrong. Your love was strict but also true. Also your knowledge, potentials and capabilities were also at the disposal of the Association.

Your dedication and passion for the Association was demonstrated by your attendance at every August meeting even in the face of serious health challenges. Not only in attendance but you always sowed financially and had words of wisdom for us.

You never feared any man, except God, and you showed courage always. You stood for the truth even when it meant stepping on people's toes.

We can not forget your cheerful smile which radiated and filled the room during our meetings, always very fashionable. You flogged us with one hand and used the other hand to draw us near in love. You were a great teacher.

Mummy,

Your legacies remain alive wit us
You were a mother like no other
You were unique in your own ways
You lived your life the best way living and loving others
We will always celebrate you till we meet again in the Lord's bosom
The void that you left is too difficult to fill

Mummy, we your women of HTC are missing you and shall continue to miss you. We know that we shall see you again. You may be gone from our eyes but you will never be gone from our hearts.

We pray that our merciful Lord will comfort your husband Prof. B. S. Okeke, your children and their families, in-laws and relations.

Adieu Mama Ego, a woman of faith and love.

My mama Ufuma, my iron lady and chief cheerleader.

Losing you hurts so much. I miss hearing you call me Lolo, I miss your laughter, your fresh chin chin and peanuts. I always teased you about those - the Yummy baked treats. “Mama Ufuma Confectionery Ltd.”, that’s what I called you.

I wish you didn't have to go, i wish you were here to taste my treats too, I wish I could hear you laugh and call me Lolo again. I wish i could see you one more time, to tell you how much i love you mama. My only solace is that you are in heaven now; where there is no sickness, no pain, and you have been reunited with aunty Uche, uncle Chidi, uncle Njinji, and Pa Jonah.

We love and miss you so much Mama. The memories of you will live on in our hearts forever.

Sleep well till we meet to part no more.

Her Life

Biography

May 31, 2021
This exercise should be deemed incomplete without a shot at the progeny of the marriage/union between Ben and Ego. On a well contrived occasion at the village (Ufuma residence, 55 years ago), one primary school mistress, Grace Akobogu, (from Obosi town), at CMS Central School Ufuma, was put forward by Ben’s maternal parent as his “must” wife. That was a prophetic statement that clicked soon after.
That was the genesis of the project that yielded the treasure base, Akunne, two years thereafter. To God be the Glory!
The characterizations of Ben and Eziego dovetailed and blended into a perfect match by all standards. The union was cemented with five vibrant children captained by now Dr. (Mrs.) Ijeoma Akunne Apakama (nee Okeke) and her only surviving sibling, Mr. Ikeazor Okeke (Kekenna).
Eziego, my wife, lived a significant and fulfilled life. As a rare gem, what she did or willfully objected to doing in her life-time clearly defined her personality.

She creditably and meritoriously advanced through eight-year primary schooling at St. Andrew’s CMS Central School, Obosi; modern school at St. Monica’s college, Ogbunike; enrolled as a school teacher with the CMS (Anglican) Mission as a teacher; and then proceeded to the famous four-year Women Teachers College, Umuahia, controlled and managed by three distinct Christian Missions and staffed with essentially non-Nigerians.
The standard and quality of the professional teacher education and training could be rated from her extraordinary eloquent, grammatically flawless English language; self-confidence while deliberating on issues; humility and readiness to work with rather than work on others; outspokenness and sharpness in thinking and actions. She readily restored hope to the poor, needy and down-trodden in the society.
Grace Eziego was always sensitive to, and abreast with the husband’s mind- set and attitude at all times, in the public domain. As an epitome of exemplary wife that played and lived significant life-style, she touched the souls of many families particularly the less privileged within the neighborhood. Self respect, integrity, high ethical and moral standards, honesty, godliness and service to humanity, were her watch-words.
While the husband became the attacking force at the external fronts, she stood firmly supportive as an exceptional and formidable rear guard, cushioning all aspects of adverse social encounters. As family booster, Eziego paid desirable attention by sustaining external family relationships.
As classroom teacher and headmaster of schools, IRONLADY entrenched high sense of self-discipline among pupils and teachers alike, thus left behind, indelible traits of positive thinking and physical developmental strands in schools she headed.
Eziego Grace keyed in for teaching service at a tender age and retired as a credible administrator on completion of 35 years of active service as a Headmaster Special Class in January 1990. Thereafter, Grace remained a happy pensioner for thirty one years (1990 to 2021).
On retirement from the teaching service, youths drafted her into active party politics where almost men’s world, she towered high and portrayed politics as a clean game devoid of rancor and acrimony. Eziego was the first woman within senatorial zone to contest election and win with a landslide. She was elected a Counselor representing the entire Ufuma community in Orumba Local Government, East Central state. The feat was repeated under Orumba North Local Government in Anambra state.
In the councils, she served as the Chief Whip, Supervisor for Education; Secretary of the political party, etc. she schemed and positioned the famous Afor-Ufuma market for expansion, modernization and development by the Orumba North Local Government Council.
Furthermore, Hon. Eziego Okeke, as a philanthropist made other significant contributions in the spheres of the Church and community namely Clothing of the widows (12 years); up-grading of pit latrines at the church to water closets; furnished the guest room, Vicar’s House; brain behind the construction of the church office complex by Prof. B.S. Okeke, (Husband); long-time prime actor in HTC Women Organization and Management; as the Headmaster, re-roofed the main school building of UNICEF Primary School, Ufuma.
The public crowned, rewarded, and honoured late Hon. (Mrs.) Lady Grace Eziego Okeke with titles and laurels viz: Nne-Di-Ugwu, H.J (Ang) Church, Ufuma, Lady, (Aguata Diocese, Anglican Communion, 2007); Mother of Honour (2011), Ufuma Archdeaconry Women Confederacy; Award of Honour, Anglican Children Ministry, Ufuma Archdeaconry (2017).
With the spirit of tranquility, Eziego left the world for divine appointment passing through the valley and shadows of death in peace and entered into the rest that remaineth for the people of God, at 4.00 am, Wednesday, 24th March 2021. Though God called her from life of trials into the life of glory, today, Thursday, 3rd June 2021, we have gathered here to celebrate LIFE of an IRONLADY, a navigator, icon, legend, rare personality; a woman of the people, through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen!
Her life-time activities are indelible memorials, sign-post and highly valuable tutorials for beginners in family management.
