I have had the great fortune of knowing the Pohl family for going on 50 yrs. We were next door neighbors back when i could barely tie my shoe laces. They were an extension of the Chickey clan next door. Greg's older brother Scott is my oldest friend but i also have so many fond memories of Greg its hard to pick one. He lived life fully in everything he did. Had an incredible ease with all people from an old friend to complete strangers. Fierce competitor, Active outdoorsmen, adventurous spirit and wonderfully kind hearted. He had a healthy dose of stubbornness offset by his unwavering loyalty, friendship and support to those that were part of his tribe. I considered myself part of his tribe and I am grateful for that! Greg you impacted many peoples lives and you are dearly missed. To the immediate Pohl tribe, Karen, Scott, Cindy, and Tracy. As always, you are in my thoughts and prayers. Much love to you all!

FROM CINDY MCCLANAHAN:

My first memories of Gregg involve his twin brother, Jeff. Gregg and Jeff were so cute-identical twins scampering around and it seemed like they were always getting into mischief. Before they could talk, they shared their own secret language and understanding of each other, and they were always together.

Growing up, to outsiders, they looked exactly alike, but to family and close friends, we could easily tell them apart. They had very different interests and friend groups. Gregg was into sports, riding his bike, and Pac Man. Interestingly, as they grew older, their friend groups and interests merged. They had many common friends, they both had the same job in Florida for a while, and they lived together, too.

Gregg was a gifted golfer, fisherman, sports enthusiast, and gabber. Gregg's level of devotion to his various jobs and his family and friends was impressive.  He had his struggles in life, but he always loved and cared about his family.

Gregg’s boisterous laugh and rambling stories will certainly be missed. I hope he is golfing, fishing, and laughing in heaven with his twin brother, Jeff, his Grandpa John, and his Dad. I love you, Gregg!

FROM SCOTT POHL:

Brother Gregg....where does one begin, from the beginning naturally. Born May 17, 1967 in Berkeley, California, he arrived 5 minutes later than his identical Brother Jeff......the yin and the yang, strange cohorts indeed. Berkeley was the epicenter of all things hippie and psychedelic....1967 summer of love, the Beatles released "St. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band a week after the twins were born and the Vietnam War was in full affect....volatility and weird energy for sure, go figure.
I, for one, could not properly identify or distinguish who was who for the first four years. For example a typical statement would be " Hey Mom, one of the twins fell off the couch." they looked alike, they were dressed alike, and they cried alike.....and then one day a few years later I noticed that these identical twins with the exact same DNA were night and day....two very distinct personalities....and so it goes.
Fast forward some 20 odd years later, Gregg and myself had formed a special bond. We both had a passion for golf, fishing and music. We chose similar career paths and lo and behold worked at the same golf club for a bit in Naples, Florida. We fished the Gulf of Mexico, competed on the golf course and caroused in local watering holes after our endeavors.....those were good days, fond memories indeed.
The apple does not fall far from the tree, this I can attest. Gregg was small in stature yet emanated a strong aura, he captained his high school wrestling team, competed and succeeded in Professional golf tournaments and had an innate ability to catch fish when there were no fish to be caught.....Gregg was a character in every sense of the word.
Gregg had a powerful passion for life, he wore his heart on his sleeve and was a loyal friend to many like souls. He was quick to laugh and quick to cry.....stubborn, hard headed yet endearing....Gregg in a nutshell. He will be missed, he is missed. Rest in Peace Brother Gregg, we'll tee it up on the other side.

Brother Scott

His Life

Gregg David Pohl May 17, 1967 – April 6, 2021

Gregg had a way with people. From his early childhood days and throughout his adult life, he made connections easily and cultivated a wide circle of friends. These were tried-and-true buddies who were like family to Gregg, and they in turn had a special fondness for him, calling him nicknames like “Lil Pro” or “Pohlie.” He was extremely loyal and protective of his family and friends.

My brother was an avid sports enthusiast – both as a player and spectator. I remember attending almost all of his high school wrestling matches; they were intense, exciting, and nerve wracking all at once! Then he discovered his true love, golf, and eventually went on to obtain his PGA playing card and work at notable clubs in Missouri, Florida, Ohio, New York, and Kansas. Fishing was another passion that he was able to indulge during his years in Florida. And while he likely cheered on local teams when he was living in different states, his undying support and allegiance to the Mizzou Tigers and St. Louis Cardinals never wavered.

Beneath a sometimes gruff exterior, Gregg had a huge heart. He lived and loved in a large way.

Gregg, you will always be loved and never forgotten. Rest in peace!

Gregg and I went to see the band Little Feat together in St. Louis. He picked me up in a Jaguar. We laughed about him driving a Jaguar and caught up as we hadn’t seen each other in a bit. He asked all about my family, we told old stories, and he truly cared. We laughed hysterically that evening. That in my opinion was the essence of Gregg. Funny, caring and sentimental.
