BIOGRAPHY OF LATE CHIEF GREGORY IGBO AGUJIOBI (OZOR URU KANA NWA) 87 YEARS (1931 – 2018)
Chief Gregory Igbo Agujiobi (Ozor Uru Kana Nwa) was born on 24th November, 1931, to the royal family of Late Chief Agujiobi Ugwu Nweze and Late Mrs. Chima Nwifedike of Umuofiagu, Ukehe Igbo Etiti LGA of Enugu State. He was the third son of his father who had four wives. His mother was the fourth wife of Chief Agujiobi Ugwu Nweze. He enjoyed resourceful parental up bringing because his parents were uncompromising disciplinarians and wonderful councilors.
Uru Kana Nwa or Otegwu as he is fondly called grew up in an environment that bristled with royal courtesies and characterized by nobility of conduct, excellent manners and strong religious values. These were the values that shaped and moulded Uru Kana Nwa’s personality as he prepared himself for life’s sojourn on earth. At infancy, he exhibited those traits that came to be the dominant features of his personality in life and indeed defined what many came to accept as the irreconcilable contradictions of a life that was destined to be great from birth.
Uru Kana Nwa’s nobility of birth did not distance him from his people and peers. He brought light, warmth and laughter to any gathering of two, three or a crowd. His modesty and humility endeared him to many who came in contact with him.
Uru Kana Nwa did not attend any formal institution rather his parent encouraged him and his elder brother Ozor Onyemelukwe to engage into farming business of which the proceeds from the business were used in training his other siblings that attended formal institutions. Even though he was denied western education by his father, he reads and writes very well. He personally builds himself educationally.
Because of his love for education, he laboured so hard, even denied himself all the social status his mates were enjoying, just to ensure that all his children went to good schools. Without fear of contradiction, we can boldly say that we are all graduates of reputable disciplines with the able support of his loving and caring wife.
In 1967, before the civil war, he got married to his heartthrob Chief Mrs. Josephine Oyidi Agujiobi, daughter of late Ozor & Mrs. Ozuvulunkwo Ekwueme Aleke of Amadim, Ukehe. Destiny willed it that Uru kana nwa and Oyidi should become husband and wife as they both shared common values and beliefs. Their marriage was blessed with seven (7) children four (4) males and three (3) females.
In his usual spirit of dynamism and entrepreneurship, Uru Kana Nwa was an apostle of wealth creation. He established his own business with Late Udenze and Ogbutor families of Enugu Ukwu and Late Raymond Okoye of Awka both in Anambra State. He had a vision of taking the business to the highest level before Late Chief J U Nwodo secured him a job in the then Anambra State Post Primary School Board in 1980.
In 1982, he got employment with the then post and Telecommunication (P & T) later known as Nigerian Telecommunication (NITEL) as a Security Officer. Because of his wealth of knowledge in the job, he rose to the rank of Higher Security Officer based on the recommendations from the “White man” before retiring in 2002 after twenty years of meritorious service. At NITEL, he served his fatherland with his heart, day and night making sure that everything relating to security was all handled in perfect order.
The journey of his conversion to Catholics started years back and he vigorously remained adamant to it until 24th November, 2013 been the feast of Christ the King, he made up his mind out of his own volition and joined his faith with others to observe the procession of Christ the King. Since that day, he has been serving the God with all his strength. He was baptized, confirmed and wedded in the Catholic Church.
Uru kana nwa was a unique personality in many ways. In his characteristics manner, he ensured that family members are treated equally. He lived a true Christian life for which testimonies abound. He remained all his life humble, unassuming, prayerful, generous, compassionate and forgiving. We his children will miss a devoted father who spared no efforts to ensure good upbringing for us. His wife will miss a loving and doting husband who gave all he had to her.
On Thursday, 24th May, 2018, God gladly received him that his time was up. He slept quietly unto death on his hospital bed after a brief illness. Uru kana nwa, Otegwu: this was your life and it is marvelous in our eyes.
May the good lord who created and nurtured you grant your soul eternal repose until the resurrection morning when we shall meet to part no more.
Rest in peace.
