A Celebration of the Life of  Greta Elizabeth Hellmer
November 20, 1916 to October 7, 2010

Greta Hellmer was born on November 20, 1916 in Woburn, Massachusetts to the late Sune and Emma Franson.

She was the wife of the late Carl Martin Hellmer and the mother of Karin "Kory" Hellmer, Ingrid Hemphill and her husband Ray, and Carl T. Hellmer and his wife Erika of Wakefield.

She had six younger siblings, Ruth Haggerty, Hellen Jonsson, Ethel Stokes, Anna May Crimmin and the late Elmer and  Bertil Franson.

She is survived by her grandchildren Ryan Hemphill, Kirstin Bunker, Lorin and Erik Hellmer.

Greta had a long and wonderful life, and she was loved by many people young and old, here and around the world. She was fully engaged in this world -- active right up until the spring before her death.

She loved sports, including field hockey, swimming, badminton, ice skating, skiing, and running.  She was a cheerleader for Woburn High School, Class of 1934. She attended a Massachusetts College of Art Saturday morning program for high school students.  She skated at Horn Pond and the Boston Skating Club.

She met her husband Carl while taking her younger siblings camping at Dolly Copp campground in New Hampshire. They married in 1940.  As a mother, Brownie and Girl Scout Leader, pottery teacher, and docent at the Lowell Weaving Museum, she helped to provide opportunities for others to learn.  She also volunteered for the Experiment in International Living.

Her painting and craft interests were enhanced by her travels to Europe, Central America and Asia. Her lifelong interest in gardening included membership in the Arnold Arboretum. Some of the organizations which captured her interest: Friends of Lake Quannapowitt, Wildcat Ski Club, Boston Weavers' Guild.

Hymn

Amazing Grace
John Newton (1725-1807)

Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see.

T'was Grace that taught my heart to fear.
And Grace, my fears relieved.
How precious did that Grace appear
The hour I first believed.

Through many dangers, toils and snares
I have already come;
'Tis Grace that brought me safe thus far
and Grace will lead me home.

When we've been here ten thousand years
Bright shining as the sun.
We've no less days to sing God's praise
Than when we've first begun.
