Gwendolyn P. Carter Brooks was born on August 7, 1947 in Chambers County, Alabama to the late Cornelious and Carrie Mae Thompson Carter. She accepted Christ at an early age and joined Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church in Opelika, Alabama.

Gwendolyn was a 1967 graduate of Rehobeth High School. She received her Certified Nursing Assistant certification from George H. Lanier Memorial Hospital, Langdale, Alabama. She later became united in Holy Matrimony to Joe Brooks, Jr. on December 26, 1984. She was previously employed with Duracell where she labored for ten years. Gwen is remembered as a fun loving, spirit-filled co-worker, friend and family member.

On Saturday, December 25, 2010, the Lord called Gwendolyn from the battlefield and she obediently answered the call.

She leaves to cherish her memories and love to the following survivors: her devoted husband, Joe Brooks, Jr., LaGrange, Georgia; one son, Thomas (Tiwatha) Busbee III, Augusta, Georgia; her loving mother by whom she was reared, Fannie D. Carter, Valley, Alabama; seven siblings, Shirley Hervey, Valley, Alabama, Rev. James C. (Malinda) Carter, LaGrange, Georgia, Shurby Jean Copeland, Atlanta, Georgia, Michael (Yolanda) Carter, Valley, Alabama, Anthony E. (Carolyn) Carter, Opelika, Alabama, Kenneth Carter, Hope Mills, North Carolina and Teddy Carter, Valley Alabama; aunts and uncles; one-great aunt; 18 grandchildren including La’Quetta Busbee, Octavius Crawford, Thomas D. Heatley, Marquette Brooks, Breanna Brooks, Shykella Brooks; three great-grandchildren; step-children, Dorothy Jester, Maelene Brooks and Joe Brooks III all of LaGrange Georgia; a host of nieces and nephews including special nieces, Samiko Murphy and Michelle Brooks, Opelika, Alabama; sister-in-law, Doris (Eddie B.) Holloway; brother-in-law, Robert Lee Brooks,
Opelika, Alabama; and, a host of other loving relatives and friends including dear friends, Ruddine Harrison, Elizabeth Lucear and Cathy Kirkland.

Interment: Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church Cememtery
