My old friend Russ Crawford just told me the news of Mr. Ware's passing. He remains in my memory so clearly: the elegant, kind, smart and gracious man that taught me geometry at Palihi when we all first got there. Such a good person and a teacher whose sense of fair play and quiet humor I still remember very well all these years later - humble and unforgettable! Thank you Mr. Ware RIP

Mr. Ware was one of those special people, one of those rare educators who provides great inspiration and makes a tremendous positive "difference" in the lives of those fortunate enough to have come into his realm. Back then, at 1970 Pali High, we were searching for identity, in the midst of the agony of "coming of age". Bud, with his respect, caring and relaxed love of life, gave us hope

Bud was a prince of a man and a motivating force to so many kids. He taught by example and always had a kind word & quick wit. R.I.P. Condolences to Claudia and family.

I met Bud as an 11 yr old at John Wooden Basketball Camp in June of '68 and last had dinner with him 6 months ago. There was always a twinkle in his eye as he really enjoyed life, teaching & interacting. Geometry with him in 10th grade was the best as he would segue off into observations of life almost daily that were always so informative and FUN! A true Prince of a Man!! Love and RIP

Tennis weight training in 1974 was great. I ran into Bud a few years ago in a market parking lot as he was about to climb onto his motorcycle. I went up and said hello and told him I had been in his class in high school. He didn't remember me but looked at me and smiled, and asked, "Did we have fun?" He was pleased when I told him we did. RIP.

One of my early childhood memories is driving up to see Bud. Winding up through the Canyon, and finding Bud on the court with a cold 7-up and bucket of balls. He was the epitome of cool--Clint Eastwood dead-ringer, built his own court, told John Wooden stories, played jazz. He taught me the inner game first and my second serve second. He set a great example and I'll miss him.

Back at Pali, Mr. Ware was often the first smiling face I would see when we parked the station wagon behind the Print Shop near the tennis courts, and sometimes the last I'd see heading toward Topanga in his Porsche when he'd occasionally pick me up hitching home with my skate after track practice. His kind words and warm spirit will stay with me forever. Peace.

Although I only knew Bud for past 6 years the tributes confirm my respect and caring for him as one of the -too few people-in the world that make it better. His gentleness, caring and generosity combined with a positive active lifestyle are an inspiration.

Bud was a great teacher, and a true friend. He inspired many of us to exceed our expectations and become the best we could be. All of us who spent time with him are indeed fortunate. Goodbye and Thanks!

I was a teammate of Jim Pardee that first year Bud Ware coached at Palisades; I already knew Coach from a Social Studies class I had taken from him at Revere Jr. High.
I remember him bringing his VW microbus down to Palisades on the nights of local college games, so that any player could catch a ride to the game

I send my heartfelt prayers to all the Ware family at the passing of Coach Ware.

What a wonderful coach and gracious man Mr. Ware was all of his life. I felt very blessed to have had him as my coach for both basketball and tennis. He taught me a lot about the techniques and strategies of each sport along with the importance of being physically and mentally prepared for every match and game. He also instilled in his players a great sense of fairness (continued above)

Bud and Joan were a very important part of my childhood and and I miss them deeply. I remember one summer going to play with Linda- it was hot, Bud was working on the house, and he built a rectangular frame of 2 x 6's on the ground, lined it with heavy plastic and filled it with the hose. A little swimming pool for 2 little girls! And he talked to us, sharing our time that day.

Dear, dear Bud Ware...Not just a stellar, handsome coach in the mid-60's at Palihi? -But a guy who knew how to say a kind word to a not-so-athletic girl that made ALL THE DIFFERENCE (spinal curvature reqrd. spec.ed) Bud was a true gentleman, one I will NEVER forget. Thanks for the inspiration & memories Bud...Peggie (Bissell) Davis,SanRamon,CA.

Bud was my coach for basketball as well as tennis '72-'74. He always made it fun and gave 150% of his time to help everyone out. He taught me a great second serve. Bud told me that all of his star players had paid big bucks to learn the technique, so why not pass it along. Bud also said that tennis was a game I could play for the rest of my life. I agree. Thanks for your spirit.

Bud: I love thinking about our visit this spring and how you tried and stay out of it when 15 year old John and 19 year old Sam were whacking away at the tennis ball on your court (OK just a bit of coaching) and how you let me cook with you in that unique kitchen space and how you always made time for genuine conversations along with whatever we were doing. Thanks. I miss you.

Bud,
You wiry wizard, self-invented genius, believer in the amazing upside potential of every next generation, you’ve danced off stage left. I admired your ideas, your moral core, your curiosity, your family, your aspirations. You were so like your kumquats - a beautiful work of nature that when bitten are surprising, intriguing, sharp on the palate and sweet.

I was privileged to work with Coach Ware both as a coach and PE teacher in the early 1970's.  He encouraged talent when he saw it, and gave you the confidence if you were struggling. But above all, he was a man of honor, nobility and he truly cared. A no-nonsense kind of guy that will be missed by all of us.

Coach Ware lead our Pali Hi tennis team (which I was a member of from '66-'69) to 3 straight L.A. City Championships. "Bud" had the nack for getting the best out of us athletes. Bud remained a good friend that I kept in touch with over the next 40+ years. I and all my teammates will miss his wit & wisdom terribly. Bud, we will finish our tennis match soon.

Bud stayed in our hearts all these years because he CARED so much about our hearts. I will remain eternally grateful to him ... for his love and encouragement -- and his discipline (I needed it!). I'm so glad we had a recent reunion for one final touching-of-the-bases. Bon Voyage, Coach! You'll be missed ...

Bud was my basketball coach during my first year at Pali in '67. We all had some memorable experiences with Bud and Jerry that we will always remember. My last visit with Bud took place where I now live in Camarillo. I shared pictures of my life and showed and left him Pali reunion books that he so enjoyed. I will always remember his calm and gentle spirit. Love to all! Chris Carlson

The Palisades High School and Tennis community has lost a great Man.
Coach Ware was a born teacher. Whether it was Math class or on the court, basketball ,golf swinging, ski turns or later in life with my two kids learning their strokes in Topanga, Bud was the consumate instructor. Patient and creative with "films" to prove it.He will be missed.

27 years ago, under the trees on your front porch, you and Joan toasted Bob's and my engagement with champagne and loving support. From that moment on, you have been our dear friend, always generous in sharing wisdom (on and off the court), laughter and love.We will carry you in our hearts and be forever grateful for all you have been to Bob, Jacqueline, Andrew and Me. Love Always.

Bud, You watched me grow from the time I was a little girl. You were a great coach on the court- teaching me the inner game of tennis and always daring to "Reach High." You've been such a loving man and it meant everything to me seeing you in the audience on my high-school graduation day. Thank you for all your love and kindness. I will miss you!

A UNIQUE MAN..he was...Mr. Ware. He was such a sweet soul and a very special person. I was lucky enough to have kept in touch with him all these years via Christmas cards. He came to visit me when I had my daughter and brought over her first pair of tennis shoes. He even came to see me play tennis at Palisades Park (of course on his motorcycle) a few years ago. I will truly miss him!

There are very few teachers/coaches I remember from High School, Coach Ware is definitely one of them. My favorite memory was when he asked me why I missed PE class...when I confessed I was at the beach playing volleyball he said "well that's ok, at least you were being active." Too awesome. RIP Coach!

Hi Bud.... Just a note to say I tried to join you and Joanie but was rejected, room not ready. There must be something left for me to do here altho my like journey seems fairly complete.  I managed to fill a book of memoirs for Dickie, so now working on me. I'm discovering I don't know myself as well as I thought. I was more co-dependant than I realized. So, I 'm dancing to "Getting To Know Her" solo for now, trying for "I'll Be Seeing You" in a few. It's a bit crazy here right now but guessing we'll cycle thru soon. Hugs for now, Monica

'DEAR BUD AND JOANIE, I'm adding a picture of the three of you I couldn't find before. I'm sorry to tell I had to let Dick go around Memorial Day. 94 years actually wore him out and a stroke sent him to you. Hopefully he is dancing with you guys or at least keeping the beat/rythum to Sing, Sing, Sing along with many other friends. You'd be surprised at the lack of patriotism and strange mood of today, as if we're on the wrong end of a cycle in politics. So, party hardy as strange things are happening as George would say...
For all we know, we may ... Dickie has his own Forever Missed site in case you want to see some of the pictures Love, Monica

This morning I saw my two little ones off to tennis camp. Of course, Bud is always on my mind when tennis is involved. My 7 year old cam to me yesterday and wanted to go and practice just “a little more” because he had some games today. I tried my best Bud impression at practice—follow through, finish high on the backhand and many more. More importantly, I tried to be patient, kind, positive…in best Bud fashion. Literally this morning, he comes around again and says to me- dad, can you teach me the karaoke. Inmediately, my mind went back to the day when Bud taught me the karoake to go along with my backhand slice approach.
The coaches at camp had my little one change his backhand to a two handed stroke, just like Bolettieri did when Bud took me to his camp for a day in SoCal. Bud, no worries, We will be changing that back to a one handed stroke in due time, and we will be doing serve and volley also. I know you are watching

I played CEE and BEE basketball for Bud Ware right around 1970, practicing outside in the afternoons. He at times would stop practice, and make us appreciate the sunset sky. I kept in touch with Bud and Joan through the years even up until last year, when he took me downtown to Phillipe’s restaurant, and on to the Norton Simon museum. He always brought joy into my life. I was heartbroken to not find him at his home in Topanga, and then learned of his passing. He will be forever in my heart. I send condolences to the Ware family.
