Her Life

From Harriet's Friends

December 2, 2014

Her Sierra Club friends knew Harriet as a dedicated leader, environmentalist, and amazing wilderness chef.   She helped found the Chicago Group of the Sierra Club and served on the National Sierra Club board. She also served on the Illinois chapter board and as a delegate to National Sierra Club Council. She was the  founder and editor of a nationally distributed trainer newsletter and co-founder of the Midwest Regional Training Network.   We will never forget the many outdoor trips (backpacking and x-c skiing; also hiking, canoeing, cycling) she led, usually including inspired wilderness culinary art.

Others will remember her career as a scientist and teacher.  She received her PhD in Organic Chemistry form the University of Chicago in 1967, after doing undergraduate work at Brooklyn College.  She was a chemistry professor at the City Colleges of Chicago for 30 years where she worked at Kennedy-King and Truman Colleges. She  chaired the citywide  inter-campus Physical Sciences committee, wrote a weather satellite grant and presented at a UIC Math & Science Teaching Conference on the "Use of humor in teaching math and science."

Harriet was also an avid gardener.  She founded the Saddlebrook Farms Flower Garden Club in 2004.  She served as a board member of Gardeners of Central Lake County and received their Outstanding Service Award in 2010 as well as the Rose Garden Volunteer Award in 2006.

In 2009 she joined Sedgebrook and became an active member of that community, including writing for the Sedgebrook Times.

Jim Breit organized a photo book of her Sierra Club adventures that contains images contributed by many members and amusing skits written for holiday parties.
