This memorial website was created in memory of our father, grandfather, and brother, Harry Davis. We will remember him forever and are hoping that his warm heart and zest for life will be an inspiration to others. - Becky, Steve, Terri, Lisa, Rita, Mary, and Cindy

Harold Lowell Davis passed away after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer on November 29, 2023, at the age of 80. Born July 21, 1943, he was the son of Chester and Mabel Davis.
Harry is survived by his loving children Becky (Ginger Dollar) Davis, Steve (Michelle) Davis, Terri (Jon) Mossman, and Lisa (Steve Williams) Davis; his grandchildren Clay Ersa-Davis, Foster Davis, Charlie Mossman, Benny Mossman, McKinley Davis, and Sloane Davis; his brother Michael Davis, his sisters Mary Davis, Rita Kuda, and Cindy (John) Tonz. He was preceded in death by his wife of 48 wonderful years, Nancy, and his parents Chester and Mabel Davis, and grandchild Oliver Mossman.
Harry was a devout Catholic and his strong faith quietly accentuated his interactions. He was a spiritual mentor and participated in multiple faith associations (including the CFM group for over 40 years) applying his faith and love as encouragement and support. He loved to tell stories and his roaring laughter was contagious and brought smiles to all who heard it. Later in life, Harry found a passion for acting and frequently participated in amateur theater productions.
Harry attended St. Leonard Parish School and earned his degrees from the University of St Mary of the Lake-Mundelein Seminary and Loyola University Chicago. He taught and served as principal at many different Chicago area schools. He played poker with the same group of friends for over 30 years. The little things in life delighted him: cars, movies, watching sports, reading, and eating. He loved traveling and being with friends and family.
Harry was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. His family filled him with pride and joy, and he will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
On Thursday, December 14, a visitation was held at 9:30 am with a funeral mass that followed at 10:30 am at The Oaks at Bartlett Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Green Man Theatre Troupe, PO Box 514 Elmhurst, IL 60126 or https://www.greenmantheatre.org/donate.html.

Harry was so many things to me any my family including neighbor, CFMer, model for faith and fatherhood and grandfather. If I had only one word to describe him it would be courageous. His priorities in faith were to be admired. He was open to trying new ideas: teaching teenagers Latin, skydiving, massage therapy and acting. He brought enthusiasm and character to everything he did. His chuckle was something to make you happy. I will miss him but not forgot his model for life.

Becky,
My deepest sympathy to you and your family for the loss of your father. Harry and I were friends from freshman year riding the Burlington to Quigley. I always enjoyed Harry’s companionship, whether it was sports or arguing about the issues of the day. A man of caring and integrity. I appreciated his wit, sense of humor and positive demeanor. We caught up on decades of being over 1000 miles apart at Quigley reunions and my mother’s wake among other occasions. Harry was a joy. I regret I never got to see him on stage. (I heard he was really good.) I will miss him.
Best,

Jack Collins

Sad to hear the news of Mr. Davis passing. Through my friendship with his son, Steve, I always knew Mr. Davis to be energetic, full of positivity and having a unique perspective on life's offerings. He had an eccentric side and a quirky sense of humor that I recognized more the older I got. I'm happy to have known him and fortunate to see his characteristics live on in his family. They are all great people will the same admirable qualities and humor he possessed. My thoughts and prayers are with them.

We live in Carillon Stonegate and we were friends and neighbors with Harry and Nancy. Harry was such a happy energetic person! He seemed to enjoy life immensely. He was a Godly family man and was a friend to many. We were in an ongoing supper club with them and another Stonegate couple. We shared many stories and laughs with them. Heaven gained a truly special angel  Prayers for his family

His Life

Harry Davis...the actor?!

December 9, 2023
In 2001, as empty nesters, mom and dad moved to Chicago where dad studied and was certified as a massage therapist and reflexologist and in his free time, he took acting lessons at Second City. In 2005, dad got the part of Jacob in Joseph & The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and he was hooked. He loved acting, and we all loved watching him.

His first bio for Joseph:
Harry thanks Nancy, his wife, for her boundless belief in him and his children, Becky, Steve, Terri, and Lisa, for their enthusiastic support, not to mention their wiliness to buy their own tickets – and convince friends and co-workers to do the same. He dedicates his involvement in this wonderful play to his deceased month Mabel, who, as a South Dakota farm girl, sang with the Lawrence Welk radio show.

In 2006, they moved to Aurora where his acting hobby flourished. Between 2007-2022, thanks to mostly the GreenMan Theatre Troupe and Elgin Theatre Company, he performed in over 20 community theatre productions:

  • April-May 2005: Beverly Hills University Club Scholarship Foundation - Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat
  • Feb 2007: GreenMan Theatre Troupe - Murder: Stage Right (or Who Killed Hamlet?)

Dear Harry,
I still can’t believe you are gone. You were the big brother this little girl always dreamed of having. I can only remember TWICE in my lifetime of 68 years (as long as I’ve known you) where we had cross words with one another. You were always there for me: when I was 7 years old and needed stitches for my crushed thumb, you wrapped my bloodied hand and rushed me to MacNeal Hospital. When I had surgery in 8th grade you alone were sitting by my bedside when I came out of anesthesia. You were our family’s shining light on Easter Sundays, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and every other holiday. You matured from an amazing son and brother to an amazing husband, dad and grandpa.
Last month I confided in you how angry I was with God that you were struggling with this nightmare that was clearly not going to have a good ending. You responded, ‘Cindy, you will get over this’. I will NEVER get over the loss of you. I’ll miss your loud infectious laugh. I’ll miss our hour long phone conversations (neither one of us were phone people, but somehow we thought of everything under the sun to talk about) Damnit, I’m going to miss you Harry! Give everyone that has gone before us a big warm hug from me.
A dear friend sent me this quote ‘There is a huge risk of loving one so deeply that the sadness you feel when they’re gone is unbearable.’But I will take your love and wisdom with me thru out the rest of my life, until I too have to say goodbye.

Calvin, dad's buddy

December 9, 2023
In the summer of 1995, we went to Aunt Rita's farm in Wisconsin where they had two adorable Lab/Golden Retriever puppies, Calvin & Hobbes. I walked up to my mom with Calvin in my arms and just looked at her with pouting eyes and she said, "Okay, fine." Dad and I were thrilled! We promised to look after him and train him and walk him.
Calvin became dad's buddy, always playing tug-o-war with a toy and going on car rides. He loved that dog and Calvin loved him.
The first time I brought home my college boyfriend, instead of being the typical dad all foreboding and scary, dad was on his hands and knees on the living room floor wrestling with Calvin and laughing.
I definitely inherited a love for dogs from my dad and anytime I see a dog in a car hanging out the window with it's tongue out, I think of him and Calvin and smile.

Harry, My Favorite Brother-in-law

December 6, 2023
Harry was a wonderful and loving brother-in-law.  My favorite picture of Harry & I was taken in Liverpool England where we were touring the roots of the Beatles.  I was jealous because he talked of seeing the Beatles in concert in 1965.  We traveled to several places with Harry and Nancy and always got along so well!  The England trip included Joanne and Bill and also included France and the Czech Republic.  With Georgeen and Tom we visited Croatia. The four of us also went on trips to Ireland and Panama together.  In Ireland, there was tons of walking and even though Harry was 12 years older than me, I struggled to stay up with him!

Someone mentioned his trademark uproarious laugh.  It was great.  I remember that I told him a mildly amusing joke about accordions once.  He laughed so hard that everyone else in the room joined in.  His family had t-shirts with his face and "70" on them for his 70th birthday.  Before he turned 80, I told him that I knew a little secret... that his family was going to make jockey shorts with his face and "80" on them.  That solicited his big laugh once again.
