Harvey Woodson Watt, Sr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Trusdelle Watt, born in Brantford, Ontario, Canada on November 27, 1916 passed away on Friday, November 19, 2010 in Atlanta, Georgia. As a young boy, Harvey Watt was educated in Brantford. He later attended Country Day School in St. Louis, MO followed by Howe Military Academy in Howe, Indiana. Upon his mother’s remarriage to Mr. Edward Seagram, he returned to Canada and lived there until his late teens.
Harvey purchased his first airplane to fly across the southeast as an insurance salesman landing on main streets of small towns. Mr. Harvey Watt was a flight instructor for the Army Air Corps in Camden, South Carolina during WWII. Harvey flew for Eastern Airlines for 30 years. During that time, he founded the Aviation Insurance Agency, Harvey Watt & Co., Aviation Insurance Agency of Ontario, Toronto Inc., Ontario Reinsurance Company, and an airplane leasing company. Harvey Watt is credited with inventing pilot loss of medical license disability insurance and saved innumerable careers by providing AeroMedical assistance.
Harvey split his time golfing and flying his planes between Peachtree Golf Club and his home in Atlanta, Gainesville Country Club and his home at Kingsley Lake, FL, TPC Sawgrass, Pablo Creek Club, Mid Ocean Golf Club and his home in Bermuda, and La Romana Country Club and his home in Casa De Campo, Dominican Republic. Harvey Watt is a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Atlanta, Ga. He was one of the founding members of the Atlanta Airport Rotary Club, Quiet Birdman of Georgia, and Cherokee Town & Country Club. He served on the Board of Directors for Georgia Military Academy, later Woodward Academy until his death. Harvey was a Colonel in the Commemorative Air Force. He was awarded an Honorary Fellowship in the Aerospace Medical Association and recipient of the Airline Medical Directors Award.
Harvey Watt married Mae Hampton on December 12, 1942 in Gainesville, Florida. Together, they had three children, Harvey Woodson Watt Jr, Helen Mae Watt, and Robin Hampton Watt. He is survived by his wife, Mae, son Harvey Jr, granddaughter Mary Katherine Tinsley, her husband Chip, Harvey Watt III, daughter Helen Alston, grandson Robin Alston and his wife Elizabeth.
