Her Early Life

May 8, 2019

Mummy Helen Boma was born on the 8th March 1950 and was named Helen Mungen. Her parents, Pa Daniel Achidi Sama and Mami Julienne Kuyonga Sama, both of blessed memory, celebrated her birth in a very special way. She was the first child to her mother and the third in the family. She was the first daughter in the family. She was born in Ndop, where her father was teaching in the then N. A School, Bamunka-Ndop. Pupils of the N.A. School Ndop in the early fifties will narrate the special attachment of father to daughter. She as young as four occupied a special sit in whatever class her father taught. Growing up Ma Helen was a ‘Tomboy’ she did what both boys and girls did. Her father always had a bicycle and as soon as she could, she learnt how to ride on it; she would be seen riding in long streets in Ndop with her younger siblings’ one in front and one behind. She too learned fast how to make akara banana and bake Cakes from her mother who did both and sold. Whenever the mother was unable to do them for one reason or the other, she stepped in, hence there was always hot akara banana and sweet Cakes for sale. She also learnt fast how to cook for everyone in the house. She protected all her younger siblings from any attacks. She was ready to fight any one who dared to attack any of her younger ones. No doubt they all saw her as 'Mummy”. She grew up as a smart, obedient, and responsible girl, who earned respect from her parents, siblings, relatives and other teachers' children who grew up together, with her in the neighborhood!

Education

Mummy started her Primary education in 1956 in N.A.School Bambili. She continued in N. A School Santa and completed in N. A. School Ndop in 1963. She moved from one school to another following her father's movements from one school to another as transferred. In 1963, she obtained her Standard Six Certificate (End of Primary Education) same year, she was admitted into the woman's Teacher's Training College (W.T.T.C) Mankon. After a year, she identified her calling was to take care of the sick and not to teach. So, in 1964, she sought admission into the Midwifery School attached to the Banso Baptist Hospital, Nso (B.B.H). She was admitted. She successfully finished her Course and graduated as a Grade 1 Midwife from Banso Baptist Hospital (BBH) in 1968.

Her Christain Life

May 2, 2019

Mummy Helen was born into a Presbyterian Family. She was baptized as an infant in P.C. Bamunka - Ndop. At the right age, she was confirmed in same denomination. She joined the C.W.F movement in the 70s and was dedicated into the movement. She was very active and in the mid-seventies, she was made CWF President in then Santa-Akum. She later transferred to C.W.F Nsimeyong and continued to be very active and was made President in the early nineties. She again transferred to PC. Bastos, Yaoundé, where she is presently an active C.W.F member. Mummy Boma grew up in a family that put their trust in God and God only. She would do anything to seek for God. Once she tried seeking for him elsewhere and found out, God can be found not depending on a Church, but depending on one's focus on Jesus Christ our redeemer. She then made a bold step, presented herself back in PCC. She will preach and pray all the days God gave her. Even in her pains on her dying bed, she would cry out Jesus. She will try to sing the hymns of praise to God and she will try to control her restless movements when she had to join in prayers. She served her Lord with joy to the last. She kept her faith to the last. May the Good Lord grant her eternal rest.

Professional Life

May 2, 2019

Mummy Helen Boma has been a Special breed of Midwife in all of her Professional life. After completion from her Midwifery School, She has served as Council, Mission andCivil Servant in various stations which include: Nkor Mbiame, Jakiri all in Bui Division.Health Centre Ekondo-Titi Ndian Division, Presbyterian Health Centre, Acha-Tugi Health Centre Bamessing-Ndop, Health Centre Santa and finally, moved to Yaoundé in the mid 80s and in1987, she began work at the Central Hospital Yaoundé as a Midwife. After many years in Central Hospital, she was transferred to Biyemasi Hospital in Yaoundé as Major Midwife, a position she held till her retirement.

She was an exceptional Midwife who exhibited high level of professionalism in her job.She loved her job and took it as a calling. Many mothers who chose her to be their midwife would testify. Some would come right to her house when they feel signs of labour pains just to be sure she accompanies them to the hospital and make sure she is there to deliver their babies. She had wished to open a health delivery Centre on retirement, but due to ill health (back pain) she could not. Her skills in Circumcision were the best I have ever seen. We thank God for the skills and professionalism learnt in BBH. Thumbs up for them. Ma Boma would be remembered for her excellent work as a Midwife, where ever she worked. Her zeal for work in the medical field made her first two children to also join the team of medical staff in the family. I see a beautiful Picture of her, her daughter Nurse and Son doctor in their uniforms. We thank you Lord

Her Legacy

Mummy would be remembered for many things;

Some being

  • Her forgiving nature. To her there was not anything someone did to her that she would not forgive within days. She even forgot them.
  • Her generosity. Mummy was very generous. Her kitchen produced food to everyone that passed by her house. Special cooking not just anything to fill the stomach.
  • Mother to everyone. That is why everyone called her “Mummy” without reservation.
  • Frankness. Mummy Helen preferred telling you straight into your face what she thought and not behind your back.
  • She did not discriminate among her siblings.
  • She was a wonderful mother to all her children, grandchildren and even adopted children. She will go extra miles to make them happy.
  • We could see, Papa was Mummy's best friend.
  • Mami Nyanga: Mummy took very special care of her presentation at all times.
Above all, again, Mummy was God fearing.

Mummy has left behind her best friend, Pa Boma, seven children, twelve Grand-children, nephews, nieces, sisters brothers, the Nkumulung family in Baba II, the Fokum Family of Bali Nyonga, the Boma’s of Santa, many friends, her Christian family, many children etc etc to mourn her.

May Her Soul Rest in Peace.
