April 30, 1917 – March 14, 2016

Helen, 98, passed away peacefully in hospice on Monday, March 14th, 2016, two weeks after suffering a fall. She was born in Endicott, NY on April 30th, 1917. She attended local schools and raised her family there. She worked at Endicott-Johnson and General Electric before transferring to IBM Owego, where she was employed for 26 years working in research and development. She was an active member and volunteer at the Broome West Senior Citizen Center for 22 years. She moved to Jacksonville, FL to live closer to two of her daughters in 2006.

In her retirement Helen enjoyed traveling the world with her family and friends. She also pursued many hobbies and activities including fitness walking, avid reading, bowling, billiards, crafts, and watching football as a lifetime New York Giants fan. She was deeply loved and truly will be missed by all who knew her. Her greatest gifts to us were the cherished memories that she helped to create and her strength of character. We will remember these gifts and her legacy to us forever with love.

She is survived by her devoted daughters Barbara “Bonnie” Marais and Sandra Sheldon of Jacksonville, Fl., and Cathy Lee Cawley of Arlington, Virginia; Cathy Lee’s husband, Tom Viles; two caring grandsons Paul Morgan and Steven Mather of Florida; her loving granddaughter Lydia Liberty Viles Cawley of Virginia; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by her sisters, Josephine Verno, Frances Stage Graff, Emma Dowling, Nellie Reed and brothers, Frank Heron and Joseph Harenza and her former husband, Lynn “Pete” Cawley.

Helen requested that there be no memorial services. In lieu of flowers, donations in Helen’s memory may be made to Community Hospice, 4266 Sunbeam Road, Jacksonville, Florida, 32257.
