This memorial website was created in the memory of our loved one, Helmer "Sonny" Stormo, 78, born on December 10, 1933 and passed away on March 7, 2012.

Sonny joined the US Navy August 1951. First ship served on was USS WALKE DD-723 for 3.5 years. Served on USS BAUER DE-1025 for 2.5 years. Was stationed in Japan for 3 years, Guam 2.5 years, Hawaii 7.5 years total, Treasure Island 2 years, Vietnam 1 year. Attended Radiomen Class A and Class B Navy Schools, and 4 months training at Fort Monmouth, NJ on the AUTODIN computer system.

Dad, I’m sad to say your brother Don passed this year. Brought a lot of memories back and how I miss you. Remembering you, Don and Harris together though reminds me of the joy that you had with your brothers. I’m sure the Navy versus Marines jokes continue in heaven. Love you ❤️

Nine years! Seems like we were all at the house together not that long ago. This year was tough. Lost Dad in July... never gets easier. Sure miss all of you so much!

It’s been eight years Dad, but doesn’t seem that long ago that you left us. Memories of you are still vivid and you are in my thoughts often. As your grandkids grow up, I think back on all the right things you and mom did raising me. I was very blessed, and pray that I do half as good a job with them. You’d be proud as they are both away at college becoming young adults. Wish you were here with us.

Hard to believe it's been seven years. I think about you all the time and often go to email or pick up the phone and call to let you know what's going on and to just say hi. Knowing we'll all see you again one day makes missing you tolerable. Love always... Edie S

I miss Sonny and his friendship every day, and I never forget that Dec. 10 is his birthday. He was so kind and thoughtful to us in the Senior Citizens Chat Room, and we always planned for all of us to meet some day and have a big ole reunion...but we never got it all together. Hey Helmer! I can't believe it's been four years! I lost my Mom four months after you passed and my world was so hard without your advise and guidance and without my Mom. I remember thinking that if you were still here you would have been my support when I lost Mom. Then I remember thinking that you were both in Heaven, probably already sharing secrets and stories and having a fabulous laugh fest... that made me smile. I think about that laugh fest when I miss you and when I miss my Mom. Keep laughing!!!!!

We miss you every single day. We can't believe you were taken from us so soon. We miss your thoughtfulness throughout the year. You never missed the opportunity to celebrate birthdays, holidays and anniversaries. Sarah and Alexander miss their loving grandfather and Rich and I miss a loving father. I can't believe it's been a year. Losing Helmer was like losing a member of my family. I miss him terribly. He always had such positive, funny things to say. We could talk on the phone for hours. I lost my Mom in July and I can just see Helmer telling my mother all the things I did in California that were supposed to be secret and both of them laughing.... God Bless you Helmer

I met Sonny back in 1987 when I went to see my dad, Lee. I remember him as a warm and funny person that I wish I had known better. My thoughts and prayers are with y'all.

Helmer and I first met when he came to work at Gill Cable back in 1974. He was a great person, hard working, a wonderful family man who always spoke so highly of his family. We stayed in touch even after he left the cable company. I last spoke with Helmer this past January.

Sonny & I became friends in the SCC Readers Chat Room in 1998. He was one of the first friends I met online & one I'll never forget. When I ended up in rehab after open heart surgery in 2007 he was one who called & helped to get me through a rough time.

I worked with Helmer from 1988 until his retirement. We were good friends the whole time. I found his knowledge of our job to be excellent to guide us each day. He was a very friendly guy to be around and I enjoyed his friendship very much. He will be missed by all his co-workers he had at Onizuka Air Station. God Bless you Helmer.

Sonny was a close and treasured friend since 1998. I will miss his many emails and phone calls and will never forget him. He was a very special gentleman who cared greatly for his family and friends. All of his family are in my thoughts and prayers. RIP....dearest Sonny. I miss you.

I too knew Helmer/Sonny from Onizuka Air Station in the 80's and 90's. Helmer was nothing short of family for all of us who went to San Jose from Colorado. Helmer and his family welcomed us into their home for special occassions and holidays and included us in their family gatherings. Those are some of my happiest and most comforting memories. Helmer was love by all of us.

I first met Sonny in the early 90's on an AOL website for seniors in San Jose. My husband was terminally ill, and Sonny shared with me the loss of his dear wife.He was one of the most caring people I have ever met, which he displayed in helping raise two of his grandchildren. I deeply regret not keeping in touch with him. Thank you, dear Sonny, for you love and kindnesses.

I knew Helmer from working at Onizuka Air force Station in the Data Center and found him to be a very caring man who would gladly share any knowledge he had to get the job done. I talked to him after retirement and discovered his political feeling. I will miss his e-mails and am very happy I had the chance to know him.
