His Life

Saturday 21st April 2007 ~ The beginning of a nightmare.

February 2, 2019

The majority of Henry's working life had been spent as a driver. He was forced into early retirement due to ill health. This did not suit him. He kept himself busy in numerous ways throughout his retirement and in 2007 he decided to help out an acquaintance who had a newspaper delivery round. The shift started at 1am and finished at roughly 7am.

The delivery route took in various shops, petrol stations & convenience stores. One of the drop off points was a shop in an area of Liverpool called Warbreck Moor.

It would seem whilst at Warbreck Moor, Henry became aware that he was possibly being followed. He had noticed a 'dark coloured saloon' style car en route. The next stop was a petrol station, Henry decided not to fulfil this delivery instead he carried on to the next stop on the route, Stopgate convenience Store. Situated on Stopgate Lane, in a very busy area of Liverpool.

Henry arrived at the convenience store at around 6:02am. The delivery van he was driving was a FORD DAILY IVECO with the registration number MX05 OKO.

The shop has a security box outside in order for drivers to safely deliver the days order in all weathers before the shop has opened.

Henry had driven the van onto the pavement, near the security box, opened the sliding side door of the van and began unloading the papers from the van to put into the security box.

As Henry was working in the back of the van (the sliding door opens on the opposite side to the drivers side of the vehicle) a man, roughly in his late twenties to early thirties, approached from the opposite side of the road, got into the drivers side of the van and proceeded to drive away.

The shock and jolt of the van being driven away unexpectedly caused Henry to fall from the moving vehicle. He fell through the open side door and hit his head on the pavement.

What could seem to be an unfortunate turn of events here are clearly not.

Henry was followed on the delivery route.

The perpetrator did not stop after realising somebody had fallen from a moving vehicle.

DCI Ian Mulcahy of Merseyside Police said "An element of planning had gone into this. Mr McHarron was a family man who was not involved in crime".

Henry was attended to by some passers by on Stopgate Lane. Apparently one of them was attempting first aid whilst the other was phoning for help.

Henry was taken to Fazakerley Hospital a short distance away from where this happened.

We (his family) were notified by a policeman that there had been a road traffic collision (it later emerged what had really happened) and it was believed that Henry was involved. We were told to get to the hospital as soon as possible.

When we arrived at the critical care unit of Fazakerley hospital, Henry had already undergone a brain scan and was in a coma.

We were informed that the outlook was very bleak as the injuries he had sustained where so horrific..................

We stayed with him in the hospital but there was no response from him at all. It was heart breaking and devastating to witness.

On Monday 23rd April 2007 after a horrendous weekend we (his family) were spoken to by a consultant in Fazakerley Hospital. He was very matter of fact and told us that the injuries sustained were so bad and with no improvement at all there was no choice but to carry out a brain stem function test.

Henry died on Monday 23rd April.

Grief & Heartbreak

February 2, 2019

When we lose a member of our family, the grief process begins and we can try to make sense of the loss and our next steps.

In our case the nightmare had only just begun.

My Dads death was now a murder enquiry. The person responsible was out there walking free.

We were visited by two Family Liaison Officers from Merseyside Police. Their role is to offer support but to also gather information and evidence from the family to contribute to the investigation.

We were invited to make an appeal for information on television so myself, my brother Neil and my sister Lynne went to Merseyside Police HQ.

It was painful, scary, overwhelming and surreal.

The appeal was aired on television the same evening.

The day after our TV appeal, our Family Liaison Officers informed us that the stolen van had been recovered.

It was found late at night on Tuesday 24th April 2007 on Cobbs Clough Road, Lathom in Lancashire. The van had been burnt out.

The Police recovered the van for forensic examination.

How can you mend a broken heart ?

After the TV appeal and the murderer burning out the van to destroy evidence, there has been no conviction in relation to my Dads murder.

In October 2007 a 22 year old man was arrested in the Fazakerley area of Liverpool on suspicion of murder but was later released without charge.

In January 2008 a 30 year old man from St Helens was arrested in connection with my Dads death but was later bailed.

Everything changed for us as a family on that fateful day. Our lives have been torn apart. Things will never be the same again. The way we see the world and people is different now. When you've experienced such tragedy as we have as a family, it's impossible to go back.

We will never give up trying to get JUSTICE FOR HENRY MCHARRON.

"Justice will not be served until those who are unaffected are as outraged as those who are" ~ Benjamin Franklin.
