Herbert L. Jones, a resident of The Forum in Cupertino for the last nine years, passed away on April 21st at 11:15 AM at El Camino Hospital after a prolonged series of illnesses.

Herb was born in Washington D.C. in 1930. He was one of three children and the only the son of Herbert Jones Sr. and Helen Jones. Herbert Sr. worked as a salesman, mostly for mine safety equipment.  The family lived in several towns in Pennsylvania and Virginia.  Herb Jr. graduated from high school in Avalon Pennsylvania, a suburb of Pittsburgh, and served in the US Navy in the late 1940s. He received a B.S. in Chemistry from Pennsylvania State University in 1952 and an M.S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh in 1955. He completed   most of the work on his doctorate in the next few years.  In 1953 he married his first wife, Joan Jones, with whom he had three children.  The Jones family moved frequently, living in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and New Jersey in the late 1950s and early 1960s during which time Herbert worked for a number of chemical and manufacturing firms including Hercules, and CIBA-Geigy.

Herb moved to California in 1972 after marrying his second wife, Elke Jones, with whom he had one daughter. There he taught chemical engineering at San Jose State University for several years. He then went on to work for Kaiser-Permanente, and BAE, among other companies. He finished his career with BAE in 2008.

Herb loved sports and was an avid golfer in his early days.  He also enjoyed good food, theater, and sharing a fine bottle of wine with friends or family. At The Forum he was an active member of the chorus, rediscovering a hobby that he had enjoyed in his youth.  He met his current partner, Margaret Wingrove, in 1999, and his subsequent years at The Forum were among the most stable and happiest of his life.

Herb is survived by his sisters, Ruth Wherthey, and Evelyn Slaght; daughters Susan Parde, Joanne Lemson, and Angela Attia; his son, Terry Jones; seven grandchildren; one great grandchild, his ex-wife, Elke Jones, and his loving partner, Margaret Wingrove.
