Dear Donia and Sandra,
You both were his pride and joy and he couldn't have been more proud of you. We watched him and your Mom shower you with love and care and provide a wonderful life for you. Your Dad stood tall not only in stature but also in character. What I remember most about him is how hard he worked at many different professions and how generous he was with his help, advice, and means when there was a need. Uncle Glenn and I and your cousins always felt loved and valued whenever we visited and knew that we were welcome in your home. Your Dad lived well and long and instilled in you the same characteristics that he had. Donia and Mike, you have two beautiful children, Michael and Kayla--so happy your Dad was able to spend time with them and get to know them well before he passed away. Our prayers and love are with you all, Sandra, your Dear Mom (Our Sister Val), and our extended family. May God help us to remain faithful to Him so that when Jesus comes we will be reunited with Him, our loved ones, and friends.

Just a note of remembrance to my brother in law Herb Shaw as we all called him. Our friendship goes back a long way, one of the moments that stands out was the fact he was the guy that gave me my first driving lesson. It was 1963, at that time I was in High School, typical teenager hoping to get my drivers license He had a brand new white Chevrolet Impala, He was kind enough to take me out and show me how it was done. This is a man who always went out of his way to lend a helping hand. He will be sorely Missed.

There is no questioning that Uncle Herbie was a great man. I'd like to share a side of his greatness that means the most to me. My earliest memories of him are when we would visit him, Aunt Val, Donia and Sandra often times for a family gathering. The cousins would go downstairs and play board games while the grownups would congregate upstairs. I remember the outbursts of laughter echoing through the house and the smell of the food. As a child, that made me feel safe and loved.

Uncle Herbie would always greet me with a smile and a "Hi, Sweetheart!" I remember that he would pick me up, seemingly effortlessly. I secretly admired his strong muscles and appreciated how he made me feel special.

When I was a young adult, I got to know Donia and Sandra a bit better while I spent time in New York. I have fond memories of a New Year's Day brunch when Aunt Val and Uncle Herbie came to visit. Whenever Uncle Herbie would see me, his eyes would light up, and I'd be greeted with that same smile and a "Hello, Sweetheart!" One of the last times I got to see him was at the Rogers family reunion a few years ago. When I saw him, he smiled and said the same thing.

Uncle Herbie will be remembered and missed for many reasons. What I will cherish the most is his warmth and kindness towards me.

Aunt Val, Sandra, Donia, Mike, Young Michael, and Kayla, I love you very much. You're in my heart and prayers.

Love, Maya Muku

My dearest father, friend, and mentor,
For many of us, you represent the very best of what we hope to be; God fearing, faithful, strong, humble, giving, confident, and committed. In you, God provided us with an extraordinary example of a man, husband, father, and grandpa. I thank God for you, your life's journey, and your impact. I love you!

We met Herbie through the beautiful union of his lovely daughter Donia and our son Michael. Herbie was a fine gentleman who we came to admire and love. Grandpa Herbie, as he was affectionately called by his grandkids, was a loving, caring man who believed in family and the Lord.

We enjoyed celebrating his birthdays, holidays and spending time with him. He will truly be missed by his family, friends, church members and all those who came in contact with him.

Dear Val, Donia, Sandra & family, please accept our heartfelt sympathy.

Our warmest regards,
Grandma Lorraine and PoppyGregg

Psalm 91:14-16
14 “Because he loves me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him;
  I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.
15 He will call on me, and I will answer him;
  I will be with him in trouble,
  I will deliver him and honor him.
16 With long life I will satisfy him
  and show him my salvation.”
