You liked to talk about consciousness. I’ve often wondered what your last few days we like, lying at Newton-Wellesley hospital, sleeping more, speaking less and less. Those last 2-4 days, when you weren’t speaking and hardly moving, you didn’t appear conscious, but maybe you were ?

As a kid, I remember once telling you about a dream, and since you were in it, I figured you remembered that same dream, and saw it as I did !

I recall you wondering how conscious may a spider be.

Today it has been 90 years since you were born.
I think later this year, it will be 40 years since Cam was born.
And AJ will soon celebrate his 20th. All milestones ! While AJ"s older brother is working in video, he may be the one to dig deeper into science. He’s studying bio-chem, and is already helping his professor on research that may make it into a published journal article. I smiled when I read Jenifer’s recent post, including how she is using your telescope. I wonder if she winds up using it more then you ever did, which I’m sure would please you.

Hey Grampa!
I have been trying all month to view a comet that is at its closest and brightest Right Now! It’s been a very rainy month, and I’m not a night person, but I consider it your comet. Last night the whole sky was clear except where I needed to see it. I wish you were here. I have your telescope, and I think about you all the time.

Kids are doing great. I have 2. You have not met them, and this is a strange thing to say, but I fell in love with my husband when he showed up for me when you… I wish you had met.

Omg, he works at Brookhaven national lab, and you could have tours and blow your mind! Did you know they were the original experiment that discovered the spin of muons that *might * kinda break the standard model? The universe comes into focus even with our tiny human minds, we chip away at the mysteries and find more on the other side!

Oh, and someone in a lab actually created a worm hole. It’s tiny, but data passed through it, so maybe we someday can send messages to friends far far far away.

Also, no one wants to talk to me about jwst. Apparently after I bring it up 400x people are kinda sick of it. But um… Trappist 3E? Maybe someone’s there? It would be nice to have a friend for our lonely planet. Everything would change if we knew this universe is not empty. I play make believe that we make a communicator with our worm hole, and we can chit chat with the Trappist folk.

What can I do for you today? My mom said to visit you, and I didn’t. And I’m so sorry. I thought I’d see you at the wedding. Grampa, I’m so sorry I didn’t come see you sooner. I love you.

Wish me luck tonight for comet viewing.

For the first time in years, I've handled your coins. I know that I"m touching the same materials that you've touched. And I'm touching things you loved. Which reminds me, that I'd like to touch more and more things that I love.

The pandemic made me realize a life without shows. Oh, wait, you totally missed that the covid virus gave us the biggest pandemic in a century ! I'll look for you when I go to sleep and dream.

You've got 4 great grandchildren ! And nearly all your descendants were at Carol's annual father's BBQ. The tradition remains strong, and I bet that makes you quite happy. A photo of that event is now in the gallery.

Our family visited Cuba, and we saw your the apt you once lived in! I couldnt be sure until I showed cousin Paulina the photos. She recognized the big stone pillars inside, and said, 'yes, that's the one'. I called her today to say hello. She said she had remembered your birthday, and was thinking about you on and off for the whole day. We're in the mist of the biggest pandemic in over a century, and it's restricting all social gatherings. It's not easy for folks, and especially people who live alone. Carol has given up playing bridge, and has found a way to do it with her friends on 'zoom'. yes, that's a thing now. You might prefer that to the phone, since you're poor hearing would be aided by watching lips move !

Happy Birthday, Papa !
You always lit up like a X-Mas tree when you saw friends and family. That's left a lasting impression with me. I may not let it all hang out when I see someone for the first time in a while, but I sure am a lot more animated then before. That enthusiasm was one of the gifts you gave us.

Happy Birthday. Our family is doing well. Desi has made many more videos. AJ is into break-dancing. In the last year, you've gotten two more great-grandchildren ! Thanks for the gift of curiosity . I've discovered the names of your mother's grand-father, great grand father and 2x great grandfather, going back to the 1700's. I didn't know she was descended from a Hassidic rabbinical dynasty !

Happy Birthday Papa!

Your still with me as I never want to totally lose you. I remember our breakfasts, hikes, and conversations. In some ways, I know you better now, partially by reading the treasure trove of documents and letters you left behind and by my own personal growth since your death. I have more understanding and love towards Moma. I know both of you are behind and with me. Take care Papa, you are in my thoughts and prayers.

Happy Birthday . I love what Jenifer said about your abundance of joy and inquisitiveness. I too , care about raising kids to be curious and to have wonder.
Pat and I were talking the other day about the way you always greet us, (and most of your family and friends)--- as excited as the happiest dog !

Happy Birthday Grampa.
I have a beautiful music box you gave me sitting by the sink. It plays "Once upon a dream", and I sing it to Sawyer all the time. You would love her, and I'm going to raise her with as much joy and inquisitiveness as you had. we're going to have science Thursdays, and she'll have a telescope and a coin collection and we'll explore elements and chemical reactions together. We'll talk about you and how much fun science can be. I love you Grampa. You would be proud of us.

Don't Forget Your Glasses

November 30, 2014

Herb was only mildly myopic the first time he applied for a driver's license but it did not occur to him see if he could pass the test without his glasses. Thus on the license was written under restrictions "corrective lenses". The teenage Herb Feldman bought an inexpensive raggedy used car and began to drive. One summer afternoon he found it inconfortable with his glasses put them on the dash. Well he had an accident with a new car that was recently purchased by the driver, an off duty police officer! The man ask Herb for license then says "Corrective lenses?" ."Here they are." Herb replies grabbing them from the dashboard. "I am taking you in for driving without a valid license." Is the responde. "Follow me to the station.". At the the station Herb parks behind the officer. Well, when the paperwork is done at the station Herb pulls out of his parking space but is sideswiped by a passing car causing his car to hit the poor officer's brand new car again! Herb enter's the station, finds the owner and tells him "Excuse me,I hit your car."."I know you hit me!" Was the angry response. "No, I mean there was another accident " As the man 's face turned various shades of red Herb told. him "I was wearing my glasses this time.". The officer began to shout "Lock him up!" but what could he do? It is not a crime to have an accident.

The aftermath of this story is that fue to its irony it was picked up by the wire services of the time and was printed in various publications, including the weekly Yiddish language newspaper that his parents read. I remember how Herb told me that a few days after the incident his father said "Herb, a boy with the sam name as you had two accidents with the same policeman." "Father, that boy was me" was the response. "How is that possible, there are no dents?" "If you look closely you can see some new dents."
