Don't Forget Your Glasses

November 30, 2014

Herb was only mildly myopic the first time he applied for a driver's license but it did not occur to him see if he could pass the test without his glasses. Thus on the license was written under restrictions "corrective lenses". The teenage Herb Feldman bought an inexpensive raggedy used car and began to drive. One summer afternoon he found it inconfortable with his glasses put them on the dash. Well he had an accident with a new car that was recently purchased by the driver, an off duty police officer! The man ask Herb for license then says "Corrective lenses?" ."Here they are." Herb replies grabbing them from the dashboard. "I am taking you in for driving without a valid license." Is the responde. "Follow me to the station.". At the the station Herb parks behind the officer. Well, when the paperwork is done at the station Herb pulls out of his parking space but is sideswiped by a passing car causing his car to hit the poor officer's brand new car again! Herb enter's the station, finds the owner and tells him "Excuse me,I hit your car."."I know you hit me!" Was the angry response. "No, I mean there was another accident " As the man 's face turned various shades of red Herb told. him "I was wearing my glasses this time.". The officer began to shout "Lock him up!" but what could he do? It is not a crime to have an accident.

The aftermath of this story is that fue to its irony it was picked up by the wire services of the time and was printed in various publications, including the weekly Yiddish language newspaper that his parents read. I remember how Herb told me that a few days after the incident his father said "Herb, a boy with the sam name as you had two accidents with the same policeman." "Father, that boy was me" was the response. "How is that possible, there are no dents?" "If you look closely you can see some new dents."
