Memories

September 9, 2015

Yes Knut,
I remember this visit so vividly. Your dad said he had to bring you to the man who made him what he was: R.G.T.St.Leger. How they reminisced about their Ikom days. Little did they know it was their last meeting. Memories... So cherished. Who wants to forget?

Remembering

I am still not able to talk about you in the past tense.
Do you remember our visit to Madame Tussauds in London? You sent me to get a guide book from the policeman. You even gave me a sixpence for it...It was only when the policeman didnt respond that I realised it was a waxwork! Typical! Always ready to play a joke!
Another time we went somewhere to eat ...a Nigerian came up to us and said everyone must stand in a 'que we'. You asked if he meant queue! how we laughed!!
Remembering you fondly.

The Fall of a Hero

December 29, 2012
Uncle, the news of your departure from this God forsaken earth came as a surprise to me. I know you have a purpose as you have ever had. You have gone to make the way safe for us. You were a great leader, a very successful man who never left anybody behind. A vacumm has been created with your exit. I pray the good Lord should keep you in his bossom. Amen. Alas!!! The great Iroko has fallen. ‘’Tell it not in Gath, publish it not in Ashkelon lest the daughters of Philistines hear it and rejoice.”

In the wild struggle for existence, man constantly searches for something that endures; something that anchors hopes of keeping his/her place on earth. My family found in you a jewel of inestimable value. Therefore, when I received the news of your death, a curious sensation of terror came over me.

The product of death is real but its processes will remain a mystery. This brings to light the underlying definition of life. It also reverberates the injunction ‘’Fear God and do His commands always’’.

With an open and loving heart, you resolutely gave your best at all times just to put smiles on our faces. The exquisite pieces of advice and motivation shall never be forgotten. Death has only stolen your body from us but your spirit lives.

As we mourn your death, there runs in us, a sense of celebration of the exit of a unique personality. We are deeply proud of the legacies that you have left behind.

My family will miss you. Ekori, my dear wife and your daughter, will miss you most. Indeed, we love you but God loves you most.

Rest in peace till we meet again.

                                    Adieu! Epue-eh-eh! Eken Enop

A PEACE MAKER SLEEPS IN THE LORD

December 4, 2012

When the news that Justice E. T. Ndoma-Egba, the greatest legal luminary of all generations was no more, I was struck with grief at the loss. To me, Justice is not dead. He is simply sleeping in the Lord and with the Lord. He has transformed from physical mortality to spiritual immortality and will forever be remembered not just because his spiritual presence still lingers but because he worked for peace, for love of our neighbour as ourselves. That is why he waded into Etung community and brokered peace between Etomi and Bendeghe communities which were at the brink of a war because of a land dispute that had dragged for decades. For us Justice, you wrote your name in the sands of time and what you did for us FREE shall forever remain green in our memories. You were blessed with long life and a transformation from physical mortality to spiritual immortality with the Lord to continue to intercede for us.

For those who mourn you, Mathew 5: 4 will take care: “Happy are those who mourn: God will comfort them.”

Adieu peacemaker!
