His Life

Houston McClain, Sr. affectionately called “Lil Bit” was born on August 22, 1934, to the late Adolph McClain and Wilma Brooks McClain in Barbour County, AL.  Houston confessed Christ at an early age and united with the Center Ridge Baptist Church in the Mt. Andrew Community of Midway, AL.  Houston spent several years in Chicago and Miami, FL before residing in Sarasota, FL. 

  Houston moved back to Alabama in 2008 to be closer to his children and grandchildren. He remained there until his health began to decline. At Houston’s request his devoted sister, Nancy returned him to Sarasota, FL, the place he considered home for many years. 

  Houston was a very wise and outgoing person. He loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them. Houston often reminded his children and grandchildren of the importance of family unity and values.

  Houston departed this life, after a long illness, on Tuesday, September 30, 2014 in Sarasota, FL. 

    In addition to his parents, Houston was preceded in death by one son, Houston McClain, Jr., Atlanta, GA; one daughter, Teresa McClain Bowman, Atlanta, GA; one sister, Renzia McClain Hall, East Chicago, IN; three brothers, Elevedis McClain, Hammond, IN, Aaron McClain, Miami, FL and Ezekiel McClain, Midway, AL.

  Houston leaves to cherish his memories, one son, Herbert (Karen) Dates, East Chicago, IL; three daughters, SFC (Ret.) Celestina (Elbert) Clarke, Columbus, GA,  Belinda (Tyrone) Adams, Prattville, AL and Nisa (Keith) Ford, St. Petersburg, FL; thirteen grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one brother, Herbert McClain, Columbus, GA; five sisters, Annie P. Williams, East Chicago, IN, Pearline Walker, Miami, Florida; Nancy A. Calloway, Dessie M. Peterson, both of Sarasota, FL and Betty Y. Davis, Tuskegee, AL; one brother-in-law, Donald Hall, East Chicago, IN; two sisters-in- law, Myrtle N. McClain, Hammond, IN and Annie Ruth McClain, Miami, FL; and many beloved nephews, nieces, great nephews and nieces, cousins and many friends.
