Howard attended Bullock County Schools from primary through primary through high school (Carver). At the age of 19, he was drafted into the United States Army. After three years, he separated form service. Upon his return, he enrolled in Alabama State University where he received both his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Science in Education. Howard, then, began his career at Union Springs Elementary School where he served as both a teacher and principal, respectively. His determination and love for children fuel his efforts of 25 years.

Howard leaves a great legacy andmay memory cherished by family which includes siblings, Lillie (John) William of Union Springs, AL, Ruby Williams of Buffalo, NY, Haybert (Michelle) Davis of Montgomery, AL and Katie Davis of Union Springs, AL; several nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of former students influenced through his teaching. Three sisters preceded Howard in departure, Ethel Martin, Annie D. Harvey and Robbie Mims.
