Dr Ugbam was an amazing physician, teacher and mentor. Fresh off my youth service Dr Ugbam gave me a job at FMC Umuahia where he was the CMD. He mentored all the young physicians and set us on the road to the success. He was larger than life. Jovial and kind to anyone who crossed his path. May he awaken to joyful activity in the beyond.

Just reminiscing on your smile as you removed my plaster following appendicectomy at age 10. I was also reassured there was no need to come back to have my " stitches " loosened . Why ? Because medicine had advanced and absorbable stitches had just been introduced.
One of my vivid memories !
My parents had sought for the best health care they could get for their child and entrusted me into your care .
You were a well respected and kind teacher during our medical school days .
May your soul rest in peace .
May God comfort your family .

I visited HRM severally back home at his residence in Enugu. He was such a lovely man, full of wisdom. I had hoped to visit you many times, but nature took its course. Though you are no longer with us, I thank God for the privilege he gave me to have met you. I know in my heart you are in a better place watching and praying for us. It is with sadness that we commiserate with the Ugbam family on the death of their father - OMEROHA.

It is indeed a life fulfilled and well lived in leadership, service and dedication to the medical profession.

We pray that Omeroha will rest in peace in God's kingdom! Amen.

We take courage in Ecclesiastes 12:7 - 'And the dust returns to the earth as it was, and the spirit returns to God who gave it.'

It is sad to hear of your demise, HRH Dr Ugbam’s. I fondly remember you as the Paediatric Surgeon with magic fingers. You were in addition an unapologetically good teacher and a positive role model to us. You made us believe that everything one sets out to do is possible with hard work.
You will surely be missed by all your loved ones. I pray that God grants your family the strength to cope with the huge vacuum created by your passing. May your gentle soul rest in perfect peace, Amen.

HRH Dr Ugbam, erudite teacher, great surgeon. Sir ,your surgical dexterity and speed was 2nd to none in UNTH. You taught with wisdom and you were an amazing teacher, and a disciplinarian. Daddy,
Words elude me. Your passing has devastated me to say the least. You were a father true true. Fondly called me "Nnem" or Nwuyenwam. You sang to me, you thought me about some very important things in life. The captivating and awesome thing about you is you spoke with wisdom and personalized your teachings. You thought me pros and cons and like a true father that you are allowed me to make choices. You were very compassionate, you were the epitome of what an angel is. I could go on and on..... Papa, ijeoma, je nke oma. Thank you for always listening to me. I will miss you dearly. May your soul rest in the bosom of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

The people who endure most in our memories do so for one of two reasons -either because of their notoriety or because of the impact they have had on us. Dr Goddy Ugbam belonged to the latter group.
He was one of the few lecturers of whom I had fond memories after leaving medical school.
He had a great sense of humour and many a time one found oneself at the brunt of one of his jokes, which were never malicious but always good-natured.

I was reminiscing with some of my classmates and one of them gave a typical 'Ugbamesque' quip, "The good Lord who made me and most of you....."! Lol!

You were a giant in your generation and it is sad to say goodbye; but we do so knowing that your legacy lives on in our memories. Rest on sir!

I was with my uncle a couple of days before he fell sick, only waiting to hear when he would be discharged from the hospital. It was a huge shock therefore to learn that he passed. My consolation is that he made peace with God and I'll see him when the saints are gathered up in Heaven.

Dr. Ugbam! My warm, amiable, cheerful uncle! I have fond childhood memories of time spent with you, my Aunty, and my cousins, in your house in New Haven, Enugu. There was no distinction between your children and your nephews/niece (me). We climbed and crawled all over you because your warm smile and inviting personality was so welcoming. Every time I met you through the years, it was the sane encounter( minus crawling on you). Your smile and warm personality never waned.
Although its been years you and I had any direct communication, the news of your transition hit me hard! I literally felt the wind knocked out of me, and had to hold on to my kitchen counter! What a blow! And then I thought, how are my cousins, your children feeling, if I'm feeling this way? Sigh! Daddy Ugbam, you left a great legacy behind and I pray we make your memory proud! You are resting now, no more pains, no more tears, no ailments, just peace and joy. Rest on Sir, till we all meet in heaven!

Daddy,

Your death has been difficult for me and the entire family. You were not someone who would leave a place unnoticed. You impacted a lot in the lives of people who knew you. So, this has been a huge blow which has left us with a sense of emptiness.

As a family, you bonded with us together and also individually, which was why we had additional special names you gave to us based on our relationships with you.

I know that God is with us so he will give us the grace to bear this great loss.

Thank you so much for all you were and are still to us. We will keep the light burning.

Rest well daddy. Till we meet to part no more.

From Daniel Ideriah (grandson)

Honestly, I don’t know where to start. My mind is still in a state of shock knowing that someone so close to you is gone from this life forever.I’ve known grandpa all my life. I learnt kindness from him. Grandpa made a lot of sacrifices for me. Age didn’t define him. Grandpa was a very strong man both physically and mentally. Whatever he put his mind to, must be done. He had a strong will to achieve his goal. A man of many achievements, a loving father and a gentle grandfather . A very generous man was HRM Eze (Dr) Godwin Ugbam. All I can do now is to remain strong, thank God for the life he lived here on earth and cherish the memories we spent together. RIP

Daddy (Omeroha),

Your title which means "one who helps people" typifies the life you lived - a life of service to humanity. From the 1st day you set your eyes on me at Umuahia, you accepted and treated me as your son. I remember our chats and your stories of your feats in medical practice. Going through the story of your life, from very humble beginnings you indeed achieved even more! Hardwork and a belief in fairness and justice for all were your watchwords, a lesson for us who you have left behind.

In the words of Henry Longfellow, "When a great man dies, for years the light he leaves behind him, lies on the paths of men". I am happy you have left such a legacy as all great men gone before you.

Adieu Daddy! Nkechi, your grandchildren and myself miss you a lot but God knows best. May He grant you eternal repose with His saints.

                      - Chijioke (Son-in-law)

Dear Grandpa,
Your death changed a lot for me. It was the first time in my life I was subjected to the loss of a loved one, and I didn't know how to react. For the first time in a long while, I cried, over the loss of my Grandpa. Your last words to me were to 'keep working hard' and I want you to know that I will do exactly that. I will do everything I can to be a good Grandson, and I will make you even more proud of me than I know you already were. Thank you for what you have done for me, Grandpa. I did not get to see you as often as I would have wanted to. Yet, I knew you well. I would be jubilant when I received your praise over the phone, and was inspired when I met you again in Nigeria. I will do my best for you Grandpa, and I will make you proud of me many times more.

Dear Grandpa,
This is Chizalu. I cant believe that you are no longer with us. I miss you more and more everyday. I still remember when we visited you and celebrated your 80th birthday. It was one of my happiest days as I was surrounded by my family and got to spend time with my amazing Grandpa. I wish you were still here, but I know God is with you now and always. Love you.

Hello Grandpa,
This is Chidumeje. When I found out that you were gone, I didn’t know how to react and I still don’t. I cry sometimes but that never takes the pain away. You were so full of life, so loving and so caring. You did so much for people during your time for nothing in return and that wasn’t ever something you complained about. And although you are not here anymore, I feel your presence surrounding me and I know that the only thing I can do now is to make you proud. I want you to know that you are my motivation. I will push myself to strive and I’m so proud to be your granddaughter.
I love you and I miss you dearly. Rest in peace, grandpa.

Celtic Lady, Vol. 2 - Jealous of the Angels
HRM Eze Dr. Godwin Maduike Ugbam, (Omeroha II of Umuasua) - FRCS, FMCS, FWACS, FICS

Eze (Dr) Godwin Ugbam, popularly known in his early years as Goddy, was born on February 26, 1939 to Joseph Ariamah and Achirinma Ugbam.

He attended primary school at St Phillips Anglican School, Eha-Amufu and got his secondary education at Iheme Memorial Grammar School, Arondizuogu. He then proceeded to study Medicine at the prestigious University of Ibadan, graduating with flying colours.

He graduated at the beginning of the Nigeria/Biafra Civil War and worked at the Biafra Army Medical Corp where he served in the Field Ambulance Unit during the Civil war working as well as training personnel in the evaluation of casualties from the war.

In 1972, he moved to the United Kingdom where he trained as a Surgeon, working across several hospitals including Whittington Hospital, Edgware General Hospital, Hackney Hospital and Brainsgrove Hospital. He completed his training with the award of the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons, England. He then travelled to the United States where he worked at the Children`s Hospital Pittsburgh and completed his subspecialty training in Paediatric Surgery. Due to his burning desire to give back to his home country, he made the decision to move back to Nigeria where he attained his Fellowship with the West African College of Surgeons.

He worked as a Paediatric Surgeon at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu and was a Senior Lecturer with the College of Medicine, University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus.

Due to his commitment and devotion to service, “Goddy” was regularly appointed to serve in various capacities within the University/Hospital where he was working and these included Coordinator of Paediatric Surgical Programme, Member - Senate Examinations Committee, Admissions Committee and  Hospital Management Board, UNTH Enugu. He was also Ag Director of Clinical Services and Training, UNTH Enugu as well as Member, Board of Governors, University of Nigeria Secondary School, Enugu Campus.

In view of the excellent managerial traits he exhibited in his primary place of work - UNTH Enugu, he was appointed initially by Abia State Government as the Pioneer Chief Medical Director of Abia State University Teaching Hospital in May 1994 and then later by the Federal Government as the Chief Medical Director of Federal Medical Center, Umuahia in July 1999 where he made significant strides in the development of the hospital previously known as Queen Elizabeth Hospital Umuahia. He was also one of the pioneer heads of the proposed Medical School of the Federal University, Umudike.

He was involved in several research publications in renowned surgical journals and served as Executive Vice President, Cancer Society of Nigeria from 1981 to 1986. He trained and supervised many Surgical Residents with his professorial acumen to become consultants and was a Senior Examiner with the Post Graduate Surgical College.

He loved to take care of his patients, to teach and mentor medical students and residents. He also enjoyed nature and would often spend his leisure time in his several farms where he planted a wide range of crop varieties and tended his animals.

His love for humanity and tradition saw him later appointed as the traditional ruler of his own town - Umuasua and other neighbouring towns where he was fondly called Eze Omeroha.

His effortless sense of humour and the “chortle and ring” of his laughter lives on in our minds. His generosity and philanthropism remain a testimony to many who knew him. He was indeed a unique and charismatic individual.

He is fondly remembered by his wife, children and grandchildren.

We are devastated by this loss and he will be sorely missed by everyone!

We are comforted in the knowledge that he may be gone but his legacy lives on.

We celebrate his life.

Journey well our husband, father, grandfather, friend, teacher and mentor.

A true gift

April 24, 2021
Dr. Ugbam is the father of my friend Dr. Nkechi Ugbam Eze. As medical students, we heard tales of Dr. Ugbam’s special touch and his pediatric surgery skills from our own teachers who also learned from him.

For me, the impact goes even beyond that and came very close to home. My cousin who is now in his 40s was just about to be operated upon as a baby at UNTH, Enugu until Dr. Ugbam came in to assess the baby.  As my aunt would tell the story, immediately Dr. Ugbam appeared, things began to move quickly. But things took a very unexpected turn. As soon as Dr. Ugbam took a look at the baby, he determined that the diagnosis was measles and that there was no need for my cousin to undergo surgery.
You could imagine how relieved my aunt was and how God saved my cousin’s life through Dr. Ugbam’s intervention.

On behalf of my family, we extend our deepest condolences to my friend Nkechi and the entire Ugbam family. Your dad was gifted and touched numerous lives, including ours, with his gift. I hope that stories such as this bring you joy and comfort. I pray that you will always remember him fondly and share in his gifted legacy. I pray for you to accept God’s Grace of healing, strength  and peace as you journey through life without him. Eventually, I know you will think of him and smile, even though you may still shed a tear or two. God bless you.
Sending you all love from our family.

We remember, even as you are passed from us

April 24, 2021
Dr Ugbam,
You were more than a teacher and mentor. You were also 'uncle' and 'reassurance'. You are passed from us and a world that benefitted immensely from your ceaseless imput and sacrifice.

Those of us that were privileged to call you our teacher can attest to the quality of your service and the service of people such as yourself. As a result, we inhabited an environment wonderfully enriched because you existed, because you served in it.

Missing you is more than just about missing a person. We miss a time when commitment and sacrifice mattered more than consideration for mere self.
Adieu uncle, teacher and great friend of my father. We miss you more than we can ever say...
