Morning Joy!

March 21, 2021
Huayi is someone I will  never forget. I know he was a brilliant thinker and helped make Rennaisance what it is today. I will always remember his kind demeanor, his beautiful smile and contagious laugh. I was lucky enough to serve him breakfast each morning at Renaissance.  He never had to say a word, I knew what he wanted and tried very hard not to break that yolk every day!  If I did, I would beg his forgiveness and offer to make him another egg. He would flash thatsmile at me and of course refuse.   Then I would say, “Huayi, you are the best!”  Huayi was the only one that I actually delivered breakfast to, leaving the kitchen to present it on his dining table.
Huayi was my morning joy!  Taken too soon. RIP my sweet friend, till we meet again~

A cup of tea and a laugh

March 15, 2021
I first met Huayi when interviewing for position at Rentec back in 1992. I remember being impressed by his wit and rather dry humor, which I have appreciated ever since. It was of course only later - once we became coworkers - that I was struck by quality of his work.
Huayi was always thinking outside the envelope and taking on (and solving, of course) obscure and seemingly impossible to solve problems which always proved to be of significant importance and impact. On the personal side, I shall always remember his laugh and everpresent cup of tea - often served together in his office.

In loving memory of Huayi

I met Huayi more than 18 years ago when I first joined the company. Huayi was one of the most senior and respected employees. Over the years I got to know him a lot better. I enjoyed listening to those stories about Renaissance's early days - they gave me perspective where this company came from and where it goes. We often had lunch together and lunch table discussions were wide-ranging - from trading profits to world events - we literally talked about everything. We agreed on many things. Even when we disagreed, Huayi was always friendly and diffused any tension with his laughter. Although Huayi was quite a bit older than me, I found him to be someone I could really relate to. I missed times spent with him outside of work whether it was attending his house party in the Fall, helping him get his boat back in the Spring or dinner conversations with Huayi and Siuling on annual Renaissance trips. Rest in peace, Huayi, you may be gone but will never be forgotten !

In memory of Huayi

March 14, 2021
When I joined the company Huayi and Siuling kindly invited Vincent Wong's family and my family for dinner. We spent a wonderful night, with Siuling's mother show and explain to us many of her Chinese paintings. It seems not a long ago and we were still young men then.
Even though we differ in age by a round of Chinese zodiac, our kids are similar in the age and often play together. It's amazing to observe the four boys/girls playing together intensively and show vast different personalities. Now they are all grownups and hope they can remain friends for life.
Huayi has always been strong and athletic and is very good at tennis and skiing. It's sad to watch him becoming increasingly emaciated with visible speed after the horrible strike of the disease.
Huayi is always the benevolent elder brother, always gracious, calm and smiling, even when debilitated by the disease. When he decided to retire fifteen months ago we expected a long and happy life for him ahead in the warm Naples sea breeze. It's so sad that he passes away so fast!
You will forever be missed Huayi!
March 14, 2021
When I started at Renaissance, it wasn't the legendary trading outfit it is today. The whole operation on Bennetts Road was housed  in a tiny two story building that would easily fit in one of the computer rooms of the current building. Trying to find a rectangular room was almost impossible. I remember when they installed these newfangled motion sensitive lights, the rooms would go dark if you didn't wave your hands wildly every five minutes. The place was far away from being a hot job destination. What profit was to be had was in the commodities. The equity side, where Huayi worked, had yet to show a profit.  It must have been a stressful time for him.
But he handled it well. The Huayi I met in 1990 was calm, logical, and had a sly sense of humor. And, over the years, as the equity side ballooned into the huge success it is today, that person did not change a bit.
One more thing. An earlier tribute talked about Huayi bargaining hard for an Eagle Talon.  The reason why Huayi was confident that the dealer would cave is because Huayi would take note of the odometer reading every time he went to the dealership. When the odometer reading did not change from week to week, Huayi could be sure that no one else was interested in the car. Like I said, calm, logical, and a sly sense of humor.

Rest in peace.

Godspeed Friend!

March 14, 2021
Huayi was my colleague at Renaissance. His office was right next to mine. I have known Huayi close to 20 years and in all that time I would always stop by to either discuss current events or to ask his view on various matters. Our brief discussions would many a time turn into a lengthy conversation. We both were immigrants in the United States and therefore shared a lot of views on many topics. Huayi would always provide his own take on the matter at hand and we would always part laughing. In fact, it is that laughter that I remember now as it was yesterday. I  am not even going into detail to all the contributions he has made to the company and to our group. When Huayi retired I did not say goodbye, but reminded him that we will once again have lunch with him in due time. The lunch table at Renaissance is an institution and Huayi never shied away from participating in the discussion of the day. It grieves me that I did not have the chance to once again break bread with Huayi. I miss you my friend and know that you will never be forgotten.

Forever missed

March 14, 2021
I get to know Huayi at Renaissance lunch table. During the lunch conversions for more than ten years I shared with Huayi at Renaissance, not only we become friends, he also becomes such a respectable figure to me. I share most of his views and opinions. And for many thoughts I have now, it is only through his words that they become clear. He was also such an easygoing person, always smiling and composed, even when arguing. I will miss his wisdom and smiling for the rest of my life.

In Remembrance

March 14, 2021
Huayi and I first met in 1996.  At the time, I was attending Stony Brook University.  My girlfriend, later wife, had gotten to know the wife of one of Huayi's co-workers at Renaissance.  We had been invited to their house for dinner one night.  As a student, it was inspiring to see the home of a successful Chinese professional.  Huayi and Siuling were gracious hosts and generous with their time.

When I became colleagues with Huayi, I had the opportunity to get to know him better at various social gatherings.  I came to learn that he was a devoted husband and father.  That he was invariably friendly and unfailingly kind to all.  He had a quiet strength about him while dealing with adversity.  There were many lessons that I've learned from him.  He was with us for all too short a span, but I am forever grateful for the time I was able to know him.  You shall be missed, Huayi.  Rest in Peace.

Remembering Huayi Zhang

March 14, 2021
On an October morning in 2011, two months after my arrival at Stony Brook, I got a call from the Dean of the medical school, Dr. Kaushansky, requesting me to meet him in my newly renovated research laboratory located in the Health Sciences Center Tower of the medical center. There I met Huayi for the first time who was accompanying the Dean. I was asked to describe to Huayi the design of the new lab space, how equipment in the lab works, and my plan for recruiting faculty physicians and investigators to Stony Brook. Later I came to realize that Huayi was considering a major philanthropic donation to Stony Brook University in a named Endowed Chair in Immunology, as part of a larger campaign spearheaded by Jim Simons of the Renaissance Technology (and as an appreciation of the generosity of the Renaissance family in supporting Stony Brook, the medical school was renamed Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University). Huayi was one of the earliest and major donors to the campaign, which fueled an ambitious and rapid growth of biomedical research in the medical school, partly evidenced by the recruitment of numerous expert investigators to the university. Philanthropy in the form of an endowed chair is one of the highest honors that a donor can bestow upon a faculty member. Huayi clearly understood the prestige his donation brings to the university and to the named individual.

Subsequently, Linda and I were introduced to Huayi and Siuling by a mutual friend, Mindy. We got to know them in a social setting. Huayi always strikes me as a man of deep faith with a formidable knowledge base. He likes to read with a special interest in current affairs. Despite being chronically afflicted by a rare autoimmune disorder, Huayi remained deeply committed to his family and career. On a trip to southern Florida three years ago, Linda and I visited Huayi and Siuling in their oceanfront apartment in Naples (see photo) as they explored the various options upon Huayi’s impending plan for retirement. He was looking forward to the beginning of the next chapter in his life and was the happiest that I have seen him. The relaxed atmosphere and mild climate in Florida were something that he found quite enjoyable.

Perhaps due to his own health condition, Huayi continued to be a strong supporter of medical research. I was extremely appreciative when he approached me a few years ago and expressed his and Siuling’s desire to donate a second Endowed Chair, this time in Rheumatology. We recently recruited from the Cleveland Clinic a new Chief of the Division of Rheumatology in our department, Dr. Yao, who is a renowned Rheumatologist best known for his pioneering work on several autoinflammatory disorders. This donation thus arrived in a most timely manner as Dr. Yao prepared to put together a first-class research and clinical program in Rheumatology at Stony Brook. Apart from the two Endowed Chair positions, Huayi and Siuling’s contribution also helped the recruitment of two young immunologists to the Department of Microbiology and Immunology (formerly known as Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics and renamed in part because of Huayi and Siuling’s support). These combined efforts provided the foundation for the development of a strong immunological and rheumatological research program at Stony Brook.

Huayi’s health has not been well in the last year. It has also been a difficult year for Siuling who is totally devoted to caring for him. Yet they remained incredibly strong and hopeful, while at the same time Huayi embraced his fate with grace and courage. As we mourn his loss, Huayi’s legacy will forever live in our memory. We are eternally grateful to his contribution to mankind.

Huayi, We'll miss you forever! Your kindness will be always remembered!

March 14, 2021
I have known Huayi for over twenty years as a colleague and a friend. When I first joined the company, he had already been there for more than a decade. He became like a big brother to me, providing me with valuable advice over the years. It's amazing that we share a lot of the same interests. Both of us love classical music and both of us love sport cars. We even once drove cars with the same model and color. The difference was that he never drove over the speed of 70mph. I guess that's because being a life time researcher, Huayi loved to take risks but he also knew how important it is to control risks.

What I'll never forget about Huayi is his kindness and generosity. Whenever we spoke, he was always smiling. He'd ask me how things were going and if I needed any help. As a Buddhist, Huayi believed life was simple and life was good. He lived a happy life. On March 5, my wife and I visited him at his home and we witnessed how courageous and gracious Huayi was when he was in his final days. We were fortunate to have the opportunity to sit together and chat with him. Before we left, we naturally shook hands like before without realizing that we broke the covid-19 protocol. Afterwards, Huayi told me seriously that I should wash my hands as soon as I get back to home. That's how caring Huayi was: he always cared for others even when he was seriously ill himself.

Huayi believed that life should be not only about yourself, but about humanity and the society as a whole. Throughout his lifetime, he donated a considerable amount of his fortune to education and medical fields for a better future of the society.

Huayi, we'll always remember you and will always dream of your smiling face! Rest In Peace.

Remembering Huayi

March 14, 2021

By Fuwei Zhang & Yusong Cao (March 13th, 2021, Houston)

We both were classmates of Huayi’s wife Siuling in South China University of Technology’s Department of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. Siuling and Fuwei were also roommates and best friends. The first time we heard about Huayi was from Siuling’s parents. Through the photos they showed to us, we saw Huayi and Siuling’s happy times together. Since we came to US, we met Huayi in person and knew him more through each time we visited them. In the past more than 30 years, we’ve been to almost every home of theirs in different places. Through the communications, we found out that we shared very similar understanding and appreciation of the principles of life, liberty and pursuit of happiness. We also found out that he was a deep thinker with broad knowledge. He cared seriously about US Constitution, the political system, economic policy and major events of various times. It’s very beneficial to listen to his insightful analysis.

A lasting memory of him is his generosity and providing the help without being asked. In 2005, Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans and caused the levee breach and city-wide flooding. Huayi and Siuling immediately contacted us to make sure that we were safe. They also mailed checks to us to provide the fund without interest and time limit for our home repair project. We were not surprised when we later learned that he also had helped needed students in China and set-up several endowed chair professorships in leading US Universities to support medical research in order to help more people with diseases with cure. He had a big heart to help others. He was also very humble and always kept low profile while making big contributions.

Before his retirement, he started to look for places to be his final settlement to enjoy the retirement life. The two options were Naples, FL and Houston, TX. He first rented an ocean front high-rise unit in Naples, then he companioned Siuling to Houston. We were with them for house hunting and we all impressed with a new high-rise building’s penthouse unit for its 24’ high ceilings and glass walls with 180 deg. Park-city views. Huayi looked around and noticed an unused lot nearby. He then told us that if a taller building were built in that lot, then the view would be blocked and the current unit’s benefit would be temporary. Now a new high-rise building has been built and taller than the one we saw and proved that Huayi was right. We later visited them in their rented unit in Naples for a week, and truly understood and believed that it’s the best place for his retirement. We were very happy for Huayi and Siuling finally settled down in Naples in a home to call their own. But unfortunately, their dream retirement life was cut short.

Recollecting our conversations with Huayi through the years, one conclusion is that he was always the one with the clearest mind. He was attending, patient, and listening to all the people points, then express his view like hitting the nail on the head. We enjoyed every minutes of the conversations with him. Everyone ended with a good lough, expecting another one at next time. It’s so sad that there is no more next time now. We will forever miss him, miss his wisdom and miss his lough.

May Huayi rest peacefully in heaven.
May Siuling, Ling Ling, and Huan Huan draw strength and comfort from Huayi’s memories.

Remembering Huayi Zhang

March 14, 2021
It’s such a shock when I heard the sad news that Huayi passed away that I could barely believe it.

Last time I saw him was when he was about to retire from the company where we worked. His wife Siuling and he told us about their retirement life that they were envisioning, and various plans they had in Florida.  It was easy to spot their genuine excitement and happiness and we could only express our well-wishes from the bottom of our hearts. He invited us to visit them at their Florida home when we had a chance, and we really looked forward to it. Nobody expected it would be the last time we ever saw him.

Huayi was my colleague. When I first joined the company, there was this group of employees who came from the same cultural background that had lunch together regularly. Huayi was part of it and I was introduced to him this way. Soon afterwards I met his family during an employee family trip to a Carribean island organized by the company. My initial impression was that Huayi was a poised father figure.

We got to know each other better, after having lunch sitting at the same table and taking walks after lunch together day in and day out, attending company events and getting together at other occasions. Huayi joined the company early on, when it had only a few employees. He would tell us about the history and what the company went through over the years when we asked him about it. Being more experienced in many things, he gave me valuable suggestions and recommendations on various matters.

Huayi was a good-natured gentleman. We used to talk about all kinds of topics, and inevitably diversified views popped up. But he never let differences of opinion get in the way of friendship, and that is a rare and true virtue when I now reflect on it. Huayi was a big supporter of our community and society at large, and gave to educational and other institutions. But he was also someone who was extremely low-key. I remember that before his retirement I wanted to follow our tradition and organize a send-off lunch for him with some of his close colleagues at the company attending. He refused because he did not want to draw attention to it. We ended up buying a gift card and a retirement card for everyone to sign. When I gave them to him, he was surprised and thanked us repeatedly, as if we were doing something extraordinary for him.

Huayi was also my friend. Now when I remember our time together, many fond memories emerge. I remember the time when he took us on a boat ride not long after he bought his new house and also acquired the boat from the previous owner. My recollection of the sea, the sunny day, the blue sky and the gust of wind that afternoon still feel so fresh. I remember that time when my toddler son who didn’t know how to swim jumped into his swimming pool out of overly excitement, I had to jump in with my clothes on to pull him out, and later Huayi gave me some of his clothes to change out of my wet ones. I remember the occasion when he mentioned that his daughter who was still in junior high school at the time travelled to Japan all by herself to attend a summer camp, and could hardly conceal his pride in her. And I remember the affectionate way he talked about his son’s street-smartness and easy-going personality.

Twenty-seven hundred years ago, a Chinese poet wrote: “Those virtuous gentlemen, will be truly and forever remembered”. I believe that’s how people who got to know Huayi feel too.

Rest in peace, Huayi.

From Huayi's friend Jasper Wu

March 14, 2021
I first met Huayi at the beginning of 1990. I was just graduated and started working for Kepler, and Huayi also just joined Renaissance slightly earlier. We worked at a small 2-story house in Long Island; Kepler was on second floor and Renaissance was on the first floor. Huayi and I quickly became good friends and he was like a big brother to me, teaching me valuable life lessons. He was always calm, but with a quiet confidence, assertive, decisive, and persistent.

At the time, we were both very interested in a nice little turbo-charged sports car, Mitsubishi Eclipse, which was also sold as Eagle Talon: same car different brand, with Eagle Talon a little cheaper than Mitsubishi Eclipse. He went to a car dealer to see an Eagle Talon one day and offered a very low price for the car. The dealer refused. And Huayi smiled and said, “OK, see you next week!”, and left. Next week, the same thing happened. Finally, after a few weeks, the dealer caved in, and Huayi got the car at the very good price he wanted.

That’s what Huayi was: calm, assertive and persistent.
