It’s been one year since you passed on Paw Paw. You now have a beautiful Great Grand-daughter named Larkin Bee. I wish you could have held her. She is so precious.

Dad and I spread some of your ashes at Lakewood Golf Course last month, which I thought might make you happy. Dad showed me where he made his first par with you which I thought was pretty cool. I think it was 15, the downhill par 3.

I still miss you so much. We all do. The way you lit up when you saw us. Your humor. Your advice. Your laugh. Your smile.

You have a birthday coming up in two days too. So I hope you have a happy birthday.

I love and miss you Paw Paw. Please watch over and protect us.

When I was in elementary school, Paw Paw, would drop me off most mornings (typically 15-30 minutes late). He would always miss the turn to school and drive another quarter mile until we pulled off at Big Momma’s restaurant, which was attached to an Exxon. Big Momma knew us by name and we would go in there just to eat a jelly biscuit. She’d say “Hudge, I know he’s supposed to be in school by now,” and PawPaw would jokingly reply “I can’t send him on an empty stomach.” Then after we were done eating he would help me pick out a candy and a Yoo-Hoo for lunch before we headed off to school. My parents received multiple calls from the school for my tardiness and my sweet tooth, but they knew it wouldn’t stop PawPaw.

The memories of breakfast with my PawPaw growing up are special to me because of the time we shared, and because a Yoo-Hoo was the last drink I brought Paw Paw before he passed. It was our favorite.

Paw Paw. You were so loved, and you were so special. I know your spirit will watch over and guide us all until we meet again. You were the World’s most interesting man. You were the best suite-mate I could have asked for. You listened to me and watched me grow. Never told me who to be or what to do. You were just there for me. I miss you so much, but I know you are not in pain anymore. I’ll always be your “boy.”

Love,
Jackson

"There is an ass for every seat, son..."

February 27, 2023
Dad had the ability to sell anything to anyone at any time.  He wouldn't let me take student loans while I was at Auburn, but he let me pick up cars he bought from the auction sites in Atlanta and deliver them to used car lots in Columbus to make extra money.  I preferred driving the Japanese cars and hardly ever had any issues with those, but he tended to buy a lot of domestic vehicles due to the close proximity to Fort Benning.  For some reason, military families bought tons of Dodge Caravans and Chevy Berettas.  I remember asking him on several occasions why he bought particular cars and he would usually say "son, that car won't be on the lot more than 3 days" or "I'll have that one gone tomorrow."  On one particular trip, he bought nothing but minivans and I said "man, why do you keep buying these shit-boxes?" and he calmly replied "there's an ass for every seat, son".  That was his approach when buying cars for resale.  Some of my favorite time that I spent with him was going with him to buy cars at auctions.

God Bless You Dad, I Love You,

Ashley
