01 O Sole Mio

If you look carefully, you will see a 1915 wind-up phonograph in the picture of me and Hum . It was one of our many auction finds.  He loved it and played old 78's, especially loved tenors.  That's Enrica Caruso, one of his favorites, singing. Hum listened to all kinds of music.  When we lived at the Humeston house in Dover, he converted one of the downstairs room into a studio.  He sound-proofed the room, gluing cork on the walls, the windows, and, maybe even the ceiling . . .I'm not sure. One night, I went in to ask him something.  Probably, wanting money.  We used to have this little joke, that when I asked for money, he would say, "What did you do with the quarter I gave you yesterday!"  He didn't always think it was funny.

He's in the music room, in his robe, reclining on the recliner, which is in the middle of the room (so as to get the most out of the recline), headphones on (baby Tom was sleeping), and totally absorbed in the music.  All of a sudden, he exploded out of the chair, legs kicking, arms flailing, screeching like a banshee.  At first, I thought that he was trying out some dance moves. Uh-uh. A rat had run up his pajama bottoms. This is part one of the story.  Part two is in the lost and yet to be found folder in my computer.
