Dear Auntie Iola, Happy Birthday! Recently I had a dream where my folks Charlie and Marie were helping plan my sister Anne's trip to heaven. I asked them how heaven was and they said it was great - they especially enjoyed playing pinochle with you! On June 14 Anne passed away so she now should be at the card table with you - please give her a hug and maybe ante in for her - she was horrible at playing cards. Much love to you!

Dear Mom,
As we all get older, we can understand even more how graceful you were in how you lived your senior years. We are using you as an example for ours!

Auntie Iola, I think of what a loving godmother, wife, mom, cousin, and friend you were. Although we did not get to see each other very often I have to let you know here that you were a big part of my life. I'm so glad that our lives entwined through your friendship and cousin relationship with my folks, Charlie and Marie. I remember how you always were kind and sweet to me. I remember drinking lemonade on your patio at a time when your dear husband George was still with us. You are loved and missed here, but I have faith that you are with George, Charlie, Marie, and so many more loved ones altogether in Heaven. I hope God permits some schwenkel coins there :)

Dear Iola, you were the best godmother a guy could have - I am so lucky and blessed to have known you and been loved by you. You always are in my thoughts and prayers; I hope in heaven you do occasionally let Charlie and Marie win a card game. My regards to your loving daughters Mary, Rose, and Judy!

Dear Auntie Iola, it is hard for your family and friends who are here, particularly your loving daughters, not to have you with us. We wish we could help you celebrate your very special 100th birthday. But at the same time I do believe that you are sharing a massive angel food cake with George, Charlie, Marie, and all your other family and friends who are in Heaven with you. God bless and we pray for the day we all may be together again.

You were my one and only Gram so of course you were my favorite. I remember all of the wonderful times we had together making cookies, doing art projects along with singing songs and dancing around your house as a little girl. I realize now as an adult how independent you were and how you encouraged me to be my own person. Thank you for loving me like you did. Until we meet again. xxoo

Dear Auntie Iola,
You have been the world's best godmother! Who would have thought that my mother's dear friend would be the cousin of the man Mom married? We all love you and hope God has given you a big schwenkel for eternal card games.

Mother dear,
We give thanks to God for all the years that we had you as our model and loving and beloved mother. We thank you for your creativity and for your feisty Independence, as well as for your generosity and self-giving. May we, your daughters, follow in the path you traced out for us! We feel your presence with us still. Love, Mary

A Few Things I Loved About My Gram

November 17, 2013

I am Iola's eldest granddaughter and this is what I spoke about during her memorial.

I loved:

Her Personality:

She was kind, funny and not afraid to speak her mind.....ever.  She loved her grandchildren and we could do no wrong in her eyes.

I loved:

Her Spirit:

She was passionate, determinded and never gave up without a fight.  My dad called her a "pocket rocket" for a reason.

My Favorite Meal:

Hands down....turkey with mashed potatoes and dressing with Gram's gravy.  I stood by her side for years learning how to perfect this recipe and have passed it on to my friends and neighbors next generations.

My Favorite Gram Saying:

My Gram was always busy having a hard time just sitting down and relaxing.  We used to say to her "Come sit down and rest Gram."  Her response was always "Oh, I'll rest when I'm dead."  Well Gram, after a long and fruitful life now you can finally rest.

We love you Gram and will miss you.

Until our next encounter..

Love,

Lizzie

1962 Letter to Iola from husband George

October 5, 2013

1962 Letter to Iola from husband George 1 month before he died.  Front of card is a boquet of flowers

My Dear,
Each of the petals on these roses represent a prayer for you from me.

I pray too, may God send blessings and graces necessary in these trying times.

In addition, I desire desperately that I will be able in some way repay you for all the prayers and happiness you've showered me with, not only with your visits but just in knowing how much we mean to each other.

                                                Deeply in love with you,
                                                                                        George

JOY TO THE WORLD

  We experience Joy

                           At weddings,

                           At a baby’s birth,

                           And other occasions

        So isn’t it fine,

As we sit down to dine

We lift our glass of wine

To salute the Honoree and say

“Life is good and it’s underrated !”

         We love our family.
