Her Life
February 29, 2016

Mrs. Combs was born in Heard County Georgia on November 7, 1923, the daughter of the late, Nancy Gosdin Wilson and Ed Wilson.

She was a graduate of Centralhatchee High School, where she was on the Girls Basketball team. In her younger years she was employed by the Merchandising Services Company in East Point Georgia, where she was in charge of the mailing department. Throughout her life there were always two loves in her life, her God, and her family, the first, and most important her God, with whom she enjoyed a close relationship. She communed with Him on a daily basis in study, praise, and prayer. She was the oldest living member of the Goshen Congregational Methodist Church. This love and devotion was reflected in the manner in which she lived her daily life, always desiring to put others before herself. Her family was upmost in her thoughts. Always desiring to do nice things for them, and surrounding them with her love. The last four years of her sister, Glimmer Armstrong’s life was spent in the Carrollton Manor assisted living. Mrs. Irene was totally devoted to her, and never missed a day going to visit. Not only did she care for her sister, but she was awarded a humanitarian award for her care and generosity to all of the patients, who so enjoyed her visits! Up until the very end of her life she was an independent person. As a depression era child she learned to work and care for herself at a very early age, and did so, even to the point of cutting her own grass until just a short while ago. Her family sings her praises! They are grateful for the many prayers that were lifted up on their behalf. The Godly way she conducted herself contributed to the fine men and women her children and grandchildren have become.

She is survived by one daughter, Brenda and Ron Woodruff of Fayetteville, GA; one son, Billy and Debra Combs of Franklin, GA.; grandchildren, Amy and Jeremy Dixon of Fayetteville, GA., Blair and Jeana Combs of Roanoke, AL., Brooke and Todd Meyers also of Fayetteville, GA.; Brandon and Pam Combs of Franklin, GA., Anna and Travis Bussey of Atlanta, Ga., Nikki and Jared Hopson of Franklin, GA., Brent and Jenna Combs of LaGrange, GA., and James and Allison Scott of Roopville, GA. ; great-grandchildren, Hayden, Camille, Quinn, Walker, Bryson, Annesly, Andrew, Adam, Kyle, Dillon, Hannah, Kaley, and McKinley; and one great-great-grandchild, Karson.

Other than her parents she was preceded in death by her beloved son, Barry Combs; and sister, Glimmer Armstrong.
