27th July 1950 – 21st May 2021

Times have been hard for most of us but even harder for the family and friends of our father Ishmeil Khan.

In the absence of a wake we wanted a place to preserve memories that we can all look back on and treasure. From this page his family as well as friends can read, add and share stories in memory of Ish.

Our darling Ishmeil had a mighty spirit, he was a big character bringing the qualities of strength and clarity into the life of everyone he met in his life's journey. Ishmeil's best quality was being able to see the bigger picture and knowing how to change the things we are in control of and not stress over the things we can't.

Ish was more than simply just kind, he spent quality time with people, really listened to peoples problems and always had the right advice, whether it was an ear to hear your problems, going out for a coffee or helping people succeed in their life he would do it and never want anything in return.

At 70 years young "Ishy Dishy" wasn't just fit and healthy he was still playing regular five aside football with the youngsters, the best keeper on the pitch. He also loved playing cricket with his Grandson Ethan, every week, teaching him all that he had learnt through his own cricketing days with Racal Decca. He loved a good cricket, football and boxing match....  sports was his thing!!

A couple of words that comes up consistently is "true gentleman" and that he was.

The void that Ishmeil will leave is immense and anyone who knew him, will feel that loss in their hearts.

The response we have had following his death was overwhelming, it was clear to see how many people's lives he had been apart of and just what a difference he has made to so many people.

Hi Ish,
Farrah,Ethan, myself and your lil donkey Ella spent the last few weeks in Mauritius and on your birthday we visited a beautiful hotel overlooking the most amazing views which I know you would have loved, we had a table for 5 and ordered “just a hafa cuppa T” as you always requested.. we always spoke about it but unfortunately you never got the chance to visit Mauritius with us but at that moment it honestly felt like you was there with us as the clouds parted and sun shone directly at us.

Ish you are always in my thoughts, my conversations and the wonderful memories.
It breaks me daily knowing that there is nothing I can ever do or say that will help heal the pain your departure has had on Farrah but I have and will continue for ever to be by her side to support her as much as i can through her grieving process.

Father’s Day i bought her a necklace with a heart locket and the kids chose 2 beautiful pictures to go inside so she has you close to heart even more now. Ethan created a lovely video which I will share on here.

I’m off now Ish, I hope and pray your soul is resting in peace and you are always looking over Farrah and your grandkids. Love you loads you dhall belly Indian x

2 years without you......

And it still hurts like hell!

Everyday I think, what would dad say, how would he feel about the changes in my life and seeing the kids grow. Would he be proud?

My heart still aches for you dad, I love you so much.

I honestly do not know where to begin.. this is extremely difficult and painful and really still can't believe I'm having to write this. I look at pictures daily and you look so well and happy in all of them, it makes things hard to comprehend why we are here!

I have been so blessed to have the most amazing father in law, I could not have wished for a better relationship and bond. There is so much I want to write but I feel this will be in stages as its too painful

Your sudden departure has left us with an everlasting void and we are at a lost. You was a truly incredible man!

I wish that we could go back and prevent this from happening, trying to adjust to a world without you in our lives seems impossible. I miss you, the kids miss you and Farrah will never be the same.

I love you dearly, there isn't a day that goes by without thinking of you, I find myself in situations thinking how would you be in that moment.. in fact I think you would be incredibly surprised and impressed .. maybe more surprised actually that I fixed damaged pipe connections under the sink, I was close to giving up and requested help from my dad but then stopped and thought what would you do.. that gave me confidence and comfort in tackling the task which I must say hasn't leaked yet.. so on that note Mr Leaky!

I love you and forever in my heart and thoughts

Your favourite son in law..

Hey Dad,
Days like this are hard, keeping busy has helped me but your never off my mind. When I laugh, I wish I could hear your laughter. I miss you so much it pains every part of me.....Lydia found a picture of you and I. I remember clearly the night it was taken, I was in my twenties and we went out for drinks at a bar in Wimbledon. Most daughters at that age wouldn't dare go out with their dad's but I can honestly say I always enjoyed you being with me and us sharing those times together. We jumped in a limousine and bar hopped!!!

We really did have some good times together dad, I love you so much.

We will always remember the discussions on shared Indian heritage, and if it weren’t for the boats going in different directions, vik and he would have grown up together. Our thoughts are with those those who loved him ❤️

The drama classes attended by Ethan and Ella and my grandchildren introduced the Big Personality of Ish to me!
As is so apparent from the pieces on this memorial page his passion for cricket, footie, good food, music, his building projects, especially in Portugal, and most of all his family were readily obvious!
There was magic in his eyes when he spoke so fondly of the glorious days he spent in Guyana, his grandchildren and his little girl!
Having read all the poignant pieces on this page, with tears in my eyes I bid farewell to Ish. But as the poem says, if I look down to my left I will see him smiling!

If you know me ,you know that I am not an emotional person , but today I feel like I need to open my heart.

In life you can be lucky enough to meet a person whether they are family or a friend, that bring you happiness joy and hope and that was what Uncle was to me.

Maybe it was the way he always cared how you were or the way he hugged you on meeting, or just the way of making you laugh.

Uncle was kind sweet and just a great role model and that is why everyone is here today not out of formality but out of love ❤.

He didn't take no bullshit but was a Pure Guyanese Teddy bear

I was lucky enough to have memories as toddlers at London road , Our teenage years at Galpins causing mischief and then my older years playing football with Ish until 67 , yes I said it correct 67.

All memories I could never forget and are close to my heart.

Truth of it , I don't know what to say as I should not be having to make this speech as unkz has gone too soon.

But I want to recite something that I know uncle would have wanted to say :

To My sons , To my daughter , To my better Half, to my Grandchildren , to my siblings, nieces, nephews and friends,

I know I have left too early and for that I'm sorry  but I have not gone that far.

If you look down to your left I am always there beating away with you.

You are all my legacy and I want you to live your lives to the full, bring smiles and  happiness, bring joy, and spread hope and love to all you meet as I did.

So remember the good times and the laughs and hugs we shared as thats all that matters.

With a heavy heart , I have to close my eyes now but you all will forever be in my dreams ✨  and I love you all ❤

Xx Ish xX

His Life

Growing up in Guyana

June 9, 2021
Ishmeil was born to Bashir and Lazeenah Khan on Thursday 27th July 1950 in New Amsterdam, Berbice, Guyana. The eldest of nine siblings including Zeedah, Fareedah, Iqbal, Jem, Baby, Boy, Krem and Rocky.
Although Ish lived with his grand parents at the family Saw Mill. He was also very close to his uncles Farook, Khalifaw and auntie Rosie, playing together, catching crabs and having bush cooks. Ish loved to go out boat fishing and was also known to have a daring streak, diving from trees into rivers and was always up for a laugh. (Check out some of the Stories provided by Uncle Forouk and Auntie Rosie in the Stories Section)
Even from a young age Ish loved cricket and played for his college team in Guyana. Always recalling a college testimonial game where he played against the legendary Sir Clive Llyod.
Between the age of 18 and 19 there was political unrest in Guyana (circa 1968) — because of this our grandfather Nana Bashir chose Ishmeil, Fareedah and Iqbal to come to London and set up a place we could call home before the remaining siblings arrived.

Moving to London

June 9, 2021
It's now the early 70's and Ish is in his tender twenties, his moustache was mighty, his hair majestic the big collared shirts were out and he loved a party. With his brother and partners in crime Iqbal, Farook, Khalifaw they made friends, worked together, laughed together, (caused trouble together) and discovered a new lease of life in London.
Ish was always known to have a gentle soul with a smile always on his face, he was so approachable and trustworthy that he made new beginnings and making friend's look easy.
When he wasn't tearing up the dance floor with flared jeans you would find him playing cricket every weekend, bowling people out, hitting sixes and making runs with his good friend Freddie. Ish was a real sportsman, he would be swimming, running, playing football, squash, tennis and table tennis and stayed up for every late night boxing and caught all the football matches, he did support Arsenal... but hey nobody's perfect.
People confided in Ishmeil, they trusted him, so when our Uncle Forook met the love of his life Auntie Razia, the first person he confided in was Ish, they met up and Farouk told him "This is the girl I am going to marry", and so it was.
It was around the same time that Ish and Khalifaw were hanging outside, sitting on a wall on Leigham Court Road when he first caught a glance at a blonde beauty strolling by, Being the confident, charismatic lad he was, he attempted to chat her up, but without any success.
Little did they both know she was on her way to visit a mutual friend they both knew.
Ish found his opportunity and just so happened to be visiting this mutual friend about a car in order to get to know this girl. This girl was Maria, recently moved from Slovenia she was also making a new life for herself in London. Ish worked his gentlemanly charm and over time they dated, partied, lived their best life and within no time at all, they got married and started a beautiful loving family with three amazing, funny, talented, gifted, incredible, stunning, beautiful children ;)

Family Life

June 9, 2021
It's now the 80's and family life came naturally to Ish, both with his own family and the family he made in London. He made fatherhood look easy, taking every bump along the way with ease and making every effort to think about others before himself, even when it wasn't obvious to us, his family always came first.

Ish, was wise and patient, he was a father figure for so many more people than just his children, if you were lucky enough to spend sometime with him, you would know that he always inspired solutions, wisdom and positivity. Something you would hear Ishmeil say regularly with the utmost conviction is the value of good manners, politeness and respect — and clean shoes,

"You can tell a lot about a person from their shoes.."
Growing up, he always made an effort with bringing family together by going to or throwing a party almost every weekend with his children and the usual suspects Uncle Forouk and Aunty Razia — up until they moved to Canada. These parties were where the fun was at, a place where we could all get together, eat together, laugh, catchup and "...get up to all kinds of shtoopidness". The kids would stay up alongside their parents till the early hours of the morning singing and dancing to Soul, Reggae and Soca tunes like 'Nani whine', 'Tiny winy', 'One cent, ten cent dollar', 'Hot hot hot' and 'Long time'.

Every occasion was another moment he wanted to share with his kids, still playing cricket regularly, he would take his children to watch and support his team every weekend where the kids played a vital role tasting all the ice-cream and sandwiches before the players could. This was more than just a cricket match though, it was another opportunity to share his time with his family and friends, even when it got competitive playing against the 'John Fischer' old boys, that is when you knew where the 'Racal Decca' team supporters were, when you heard them kissing teeth.

Ish encouraged his sons to get involved with sports as much as possible, dropping them off to training, picking them up, he never missed a competition and without fail, you would see him watching and supporting you from the sidelines, you could genuinely see how proud he was as a father for his sons.

An avid movie fan, Ishmeil took his children to the cinema to see all the latest big movies, Star Wars, Superman, Lion King and Matrix to name a few. When Ish got one of the first VHS players on the market, the movie nights started! Sitting up till late with his kids watching their first VHS movies with cult classic's like Enter the Dragon, Warriors, The Message and Saturn Three (dad was a big Farrah Fawcett Majors fan, does the first name sound familiar :)

The family always had amazing trips and Ish loved to travel to Canada, in and around Slovenia, Croatia and Italy. There was one trip in particular, when the whole family drove through Europe at the time Maria was pregnant with Miles, they broke down in Munich, and flew down the Austrian mountains with barely any break pads left on the car. But in true Ishmeil style being the charismatic man he was, they met some amazing people and made friend's along the way, including the lovely couple who let the whole family stay with them when they broke down in Munich at 1am in the morning.

At that time, Friday night was treat night for us, Dad used to come back from work at the garage in Brixton with chocolate goodies like a Whisper, Flake or a Lion bar. He would get to the window to see our snotty noses pressed against the window, dribbling and everything waiting until he came in with a big smile on his face and all them goodies.

Growing up in Guyana_Ghost Story from Uncle Forook

June 29, 2021
Our times together were full of laughs.  One night on the night of Lilatul Qadr, the night everyone stays up to pray, we all went to New Amsterdam’s mosque.  It was customary to dress in white.  In the morning hours, just before sunrise, while still dark, Ishmeil decided to pretend he was a ghost.  So he stooped down in the middle of the road and waited for someone to come along.  A cyclist was the unfortunate person because he saw this white thing in the middle of the road, thought it was a ghost and turned and rode back as quickly as he could.  There are so many pranks like this that we got up to together.

Growing up in Guyana _Castor Oil story by Auntie Rosie

I Remember the time when the boys were all given castor oil during the summer holidays & they went over to Bhoujie to play, then they all started wanting to go toilet, but couldn’t make it, I was there, so I put cement bag paper in their pants!

Growing up in Guyana _Saw mill trap from Uncle Forook

June 29, 2021
We got into mischief.  One of the most dangerous and to be honest, terrible thing we ever did was to set a trap for any kid that would come into the sawmill to play.  Ishmeil, Khalifaw and myself dug a deep hole in the sawdust hoping that one of the kids would fall into it.  We never thought about safety or danger!   Once the trap was set, of course, a boy from the neighbourhood came  along, falls into the hole, and the huge wall of sawdust came crashing down and buried him. We worked like mad to free him.  We were scared at first but afterwards we had a good laugh; and then we did it all over again!
