“PROF ISRAEL ADU’S life was a SHINING EXAMPLE OF A QUINTESSENTIAL HUMBLE ACADEMIC AND ADMINISTRATOR”
It is with a deep sense of shock and loss that we write this Tribute in honour of a distinguished Animal scientist and a recognised and Awards-winning expert in Livestock Production and on issues related to Quality Assurance in Open and Distance Learning. A top University Administrator. He was a man of substance.
An outstanding University teacher has left us. But not without leaving behind indelible legacies! He cannot be forgotten in the many spheres of academia that he impacted nationally namely scientific advancement, tertiary education, distance learning etc.
Prof Israel F. Adu, was such a pleasant colleague with a genteel façade, soft spoken and endowed with deep thinking and introspection. He superbly contributed throughout his life intellectually, morally and selflessly mentoring and inspiring younger and aspiring academics.
We celebrate the life of this quintessential gentleman and we commiserate with his family over this loss. May his great soul rest in perfect peace!
Please accept our sympathy and condolences.

TRIBUTE TO OUR UNCLE FOLU
Earliest recollection: a young postgraduate student of Animal Science, at the University of Ibadan who occasionally visited our next-door neighbor, the Olalokus at U.I. I ended up an occasional mail runner and intermediary when my Aunt Agnes caught your fancy. It is now all history, but the fond memories reverberate just as the beautiful souls you have left behind is evidence of that early contact. You were my Dad’s ‘first born’ and an incredibly significant part of our family history. We appreciate the immeasurably great experience that knowing you has been. You are loved and will be sorely missed. Sleep on Uncle till we all meet in glory.

My loving, energetic, adventurous, compassionate, God-fearing and inspirational daddy with good sense of humour. You brought big smiles on my face each time you called me the nickname you specially gave me - “AbimAbim”, combined a big handshake! You will forever be remembered. We missed you so much daddy. We know you are in a better place with our Heavenly Father, smiling on all of us and saying my children please carry on with the legacy I left behind...
Rest in peace daddy!

Uncle, you would have been 76 today; alas you have chosen to celebrate your birthday with the angels. It's still like a dream. I remember your visits to our Block 5 Flat 4 (actually your cousin's Flat 3 home at Barth Road in U.I. in the 70s. I remember visiting your home at Oke'Tunu, Ibadan after you had married my Aunt Agnes and occasionally joining in your early Saturday morning celebration of "akara" balls and your friends coming in to visit too.
I remember that your NAPRI, Shika- Zaria home never lacked goat meat and I looked forward to the pepper soups, any time I visited. You related to me not minding the age gap. The memory of those pleasant times sound like yesterday and I thank God for every moment, appreciating my Aunt Agnes, your perfect fit who made knowing you an immeasurably great experience. Sleep on Uncle till we all meet in glory.

A GREAT MAN! A GREAT DEPARTURE!! A GREAT LOSS!!!

Emeritus Prof. Israel Folorunsho Adu was a great man who lived a great life of dedication to God and humanity. He was an accomplished scholar and fine administrator. It is no longer news that our dear University, the Federal University of Agriculture under his watch enjoyed an unprecedented grace and leaped from glory to glory emerging first in 2002 and again in 2005.

He was a man who was never oblivious of the fact that his meteoric rise to stardom was a product of grace, hence his unalloyed commitment to human capacity development. He was a great man who lived a great life of monumental impact. His departure, though painful, was also great and is one that should be coveted by many of us. He simply walked to the other side!

I met Prof. Adu for the first time in the year 2000 after my emergence as the President of the Students’ Union Government of the University. He was the Deputy Vice- Chancellor and we had reasons to relate closely. He was not a man of many words but very firm. With his experience as a former Dean of Student Affairs, he was home with the games. His eyes would easily convey his annoyance despite being calm. We had it rough with each protecting his mandate but with the DSA, Prof. C.F.I. Onwuka and Baba Ladejo, we moved on.

By the time I returned from service year for my Masters Degree, Prof. Adu had become the third substantive Vice- Chancellor of the University. He was prepared and equipped for the assignment. Little wonder, the awards and accolades turned in torrentially. He exhibited a Midas touch. He attempted to be perfect but since perfection is an exclusive preserve of the Almighty God, he could not.

Prof. Adu shaped many destinies including myself without taking credit for it. He built many homes including mine without seeking relevance. He was interested in the well-being, progress and success of everyone around him. He was a father figure to many regardless of their affiliations and leanings. He could leave his highly exalted position as Vice- Chancellor to mediate in domestic issues of his staff notwithstanding the level. He was a family man!

Prof. Adu belong to the endangered group of extreme conservatives whose mantra is contentment and exemplary leadership. He was never a waster of resources! I remember the days of roof leakage at the lodge. Another VC would have ordered the immediate removal of the entire roof if at all salaries would not be paid to staff but he managed it the way he would manage his personal house. I am therefore not surprised at the many doors of opportunities God Almighty opened for him after his tenure as Vice- Chancellor.

He employed me as one of the pioneer Administrative staff of Centre for Human Resources Development ( CENHURD). For months, I was the least paid despite having unbridled access to him. Other staff wondered and some others possibly thought that maybe I had other allowances. I met him one day and raised the issue thinking that he had forgotten and I was surprised when he told me that he remembered. He was training me to appreciate and manage the little I had. He parted me at the back and said “ Mike, leave everything for God Almighty” Today, I look back and thank God Almighty.

Prof. Adu never allowed backbiting to thrive in his administration and relationship with people. He had a traditional way of verifying the truth. He was never an administrator that could be easily lured into taking an offence against another man. He was in control of himself and his emotions. He was like a captain who would go for a compass regardless of the difficulties. I remember him driving down to my office at Isale Igbein one early morning. The VC and the small boy locked up and talked! He was a great man! He had a unique smile and a unique slang " Looto" confirming the truth.

Prof. Adu was a builder cum investor who would never want any of his architectural designs to be distorted and his investment wasted. I remember his intervention at a point that I took an erratic decision of leaving the University of Agriculture, Abeokuta. He had called early in the morning to say “ Mike, I learnt you are leaving UNAAB” I had replied that I would come over to see him. He simply said that “ You don’t need to see me what I am telling you is that, that your decision is wrong. The rest is now history!

He was a father who knew all his adopted children very well and related very well with them based on individual virtues. He was always willing to contribute towards improving lives. I remember that during our last physical conversation in January, he encouraged me on award winning grants. Always seeking the best for his children!

In his strong belief in the graduates of the University, Prof. Adu ensured that many graduates of the University were employed by the University. He amplified the vision! He caught a vision of graduates of the University being absorbed as Administrative staff to cushion the effects of properly relating core scientific documentations. He equally encouraged the Alumni Association to grow. He was a Vice- Chancellor who visited Chapters of the Alumni Association in a bid to enhance growth and development of both the University and the Alumni.

Most importantly is the fact that our Emeritus Professor died as a child of God. God Almighty glorified Himself in his departure by making it a great one devoid of hassles. I am sure that those who witnessed the bye bye would always smile whenever they remember it. Prof. was a great man of valour, an impeccable character, a great respecter of family values and committed child of God. I learnt that his last yearnings were messages about heaven and heaven he has made.

To our dear Mummy Adu, the peace of Almighty God be with you Ma. You have always been a good mother to us all. The plantain and banana you gave us on January 1, 2020 lasted days and as the Lord liveth, we will be together for many more years to come in Jesus Mighty Name. To the biological children, God Almighty will strengthen you to carry on with the lofty ideals of the great man.

Prof is gone ! Our Daddy is gone!! One of the very few people who call me Mike is gone!!! I could not believe it at first but have to live with it. It is my prayer that God Almighty will grant all of us the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss and most importantly to prepare for the day we will also say bye bye to this world of vanity. For it is appointed unto every man to die once and after this judgement.

I knew him at NOUN even though we moth migrated from ABUZaria. He though much earlier. Often referred to as my elder brother, he was exactly that. A very humble person and a respecter of constituted authority even if they turned up much lower in age. He never looked down on anybody. A respecter of intellect. He had a soft spot for me. Wished me well always so distraught was he when my wife passed away he avoided me for days. I will miss him.
His many accolades is indicative of his many accomplishments in various aspects of life. Had to joke with him the other day he was conferred as Emeritus at FUNAB and queried him what awards he was going to leave for his younger brother if he continued gathering these awards. He said I shouldn’t worry. The God who did it for him would do same for me. Classic humility.
I loved him. I was Always safe in his presence. Could discuss anything with him.
His family too will miss him. Especially mummy his wife- the quiet egungun behind the masquerade.
Never thought he could leave so suddenly but characteristically like a candle in the wind he left. QUIETLY. E sūn ré. E sūn ré in the eternal blossom of God.

DADDY I.F. ADU -MY ANGEL AND DESTINY HELPER

When I think of Daddy Adu, many things come to my mind ...angel, destiny-helper, teacher of the word of God, intelligent boss, generous and loving father to the core. It was always exciting to ride in his car to and from church, till we parted. Daddy Adu, oko mama Agi was gracious, benevolent, loving, caring and disciplined. I was always shy whenever I visited their house and my boss & father served me with refreshments, which was a sign of humility and spirit of servanthood. He loved the Lord with an unrivaled passion & lived the life of absolute faith in God for posterity. Daddy, the legacies you left behind would ever remain in my memory.

SLEEP ON MY PASTOR, BOSS & FATHER, till we meet to part no more on the resurrection day.

ADIEU!

Irantayan Asayan Generation Family Tribute In Honour Of Our Departed Father, Brother, Friend and Mentor__Prof. Folu Adu. You have left your footprint on the sand of times.

That faithful Sunday when the Lord suddenly took you away unannounced, tears rolled in our eyes. We never knew you could die and disappear just like that. It was unbelievable. Why should you die and leave us like that without saying farewell. We were too shocked to comprehend your death. It caught us unawares. It is unfortunate that you did not make us to be aware that you are leaving so soon. No one guessed that your death was so near. We have settled in the fact that the situation was beyond your control. If you had the the opportunity you would have asked God to give you some more time. You were never given a chance to speak on an issue that concerned you. God used His sovereignty to checkmate all if us. If He had given us the opportunity to vote, we are so sure, we would have defeated Him.

We still can't believe that we are writing the tribute of your passing into glory. Words cannot describe this difficult moment, but this is the last chance we get to say goodbye and so we are doing that with the knowledge considering ourselves blessed to have been part of your life.

There is an adage which says "Better to die in the flower of youth on the chance of winning a noble name than to live at ease and die unloved and unrenounced". Uncle, that you lived and died a happy man is an undeniable fact. Indeed, it is not how far but how well. You lived a concise life and lived it to the service of humanity. Yours was a life well spent. You fulfilled almost all missions to humanity and in every sphere of life; mention it, you will find his footprints there.

Uncle you meant a lot to our family. We cannot fully express how we feel at this time. The sacrifices you made, the good times we had, the smiles, joys, laughter and pains that we shared.

You also touched many lives by your selfless and countless acts of kindness, always giving and never expecting any favours in return. Your dedication to a cause is what sets you apart. You were an exemplary man of peace, loving and a man of great honour.

In concluding, we wish to describe him as an embodiment of love, care and impartial treatment to all. When our minds travel back to what you have done so far, we have our consolation that you only relocated, not extinguished. We cherish your virtues of contentment sacrifice, endurance and godliness. You have fought the good fight, you have finished your course and you have kept the faith.

We are grateful to God for giving you a beautiful and a happy ending. Adieu great achiever, peacemaker, God-sent, guiding angel. Adieu Prof. Folu Adu, continue to rest in the bosom of Lord.

My dearest father and amiable boss. The news of your sudden death came as a rude shock to me, my wife and my children. You were a father in a million to us in my family and a great benefactor to many others you impacted positively on during your sojourn on mother earth. The last time l came visiting you in your home in abeokuta, l expressed my happiness about your visible good state of health and the fact that you were looking younger than your age and you responded that it was the grace of God, not knowing that death was locking closer in the corner. As l was driving home that day, l told a friend of mine in the car that 'this baba Adu will live up to 100 years and beyond the way he was looking '. But alas, God has his plans. Though, we would have loved you live longer to enjoy the fruits of your labour, but God chose to take you away peaceful at the bibilical age of three scores plus one. Our joy is that you lived a most fulfilled life. As we mourn your death, it is my prayer that God will consider your good works and considerate heart while on earth and bless your soul, accepting you into his bossom. May he continue to be a dependable husband to our mummy, Mrs Jokotola Adu and all the children. I pray God to accept the soul of our baba, Professor Emeritus, Pastor Israel Folorunso Adu, my father and mentor into heaven and grant him eternal rest.
Adieu baba Adu, we shall miss you. Sleep well my Prof.

The news of your departure is still hard for me and my family to believe
It is heart breaking and painful that you had to leave us so soon. You were a core family man and your presence in the family of Awolalu was so profound. Indeed, you were a pillar of support.
The way you loved my Aunty Joko unconditionally is immeasurable and it was really touching to me. The impact you had in the family and also the society at large can never be forgotten in a hurry. Your sudden death came as a rude shock to everyone. I did not expect this great loss and I wish we had more time to continue to appreciate you. God in His infinite wisdom knows best.
May the Lord comfort and sustain your wife, children and grandchildren now and always. May the Lord Almighty give us the fortitude to bear this loss and may your gentle soul rest in perfect peace until we meet again at his bosom. Amen!

TRIBUTE TO MY BELOVED GRAND-UNCLE REV. EMERITUS PROF. ISRAEL FOLORUNSHO ADU

Just this past week, if anyone said to me that I would be writing a tribute to you because you have transitioned to glory, I would never have believed it. Both Mum and yourself still sent me a cash gift saying, "We have seen the devotional videos and we are just proud of you". That was the parting shot of a Grand-Uncle who loved with all he had.

My first shot at exposure was my regular vacation in Abeokuta. Everytime you visit Eruwa, it has a unique way of coinciding with my holidays, I would bid my parents bye and hop into your Peugeot 504 official car.

Even seasons when you did not come to Eruwa, you would send the driver with gifts to my parents and surely the driver returns to Abeokuta with me.

The first time I watched AIT was right in your living room. My first encounter with Nollywood was also in your Living Room as we gather round rented movies (in the days of Video Clubs) and bottles of wine and at times, peppered rabbit. What a memory!

Couple of New Year celebrations met me in Abeokuta as a Teenager. The Christmas Trips to Igbara-Oke was always an highlight of the year.

With you, I saw commitment with Friendship- Your relationship with Chief Fasae of Akure and the Prof T.R. Ajayi of Ife is such a huge one. Your children were a part of the bond. The ADFAJ family made the Christmas groove!

The most famous prophetic picture that I have of my future when I did not know was taken in a garment sown for me one of the Christmas breaks in Abeokuta (Picture Beneath).

When it was too late to get admission to OAU IFE at my first attempt in UTME, you played a great role in ensuring that I got admitted to Olabisi Onabanjo University.

One jovial moment I cannot forget was the Sunday Afternoon at Total Mode Turn Over (TMTO- a radio quiz on OGBC FM), I was asked who the Vice Chancellor of University of Agriculture Abeokuta is. I just left your official quarters as VC to participate in the Radio Quiz. I had a good laugh and mentioned with regal "Prof. Israel Folorunsho Adu". I wonder how favour smiled on me that day.

When I returned to the VC's lodge, you said, "Spencer, they asked you who the VC of UNAAB is on Radio and you got the wrong answer". I wondered how I got it wrong. You said I should have told them "Daddy". We had a good laugh.

As jovial as you are, you are also tough and principled. I remember the day I travelled in to Abeokuta and went to bed without waiting for you to return from work. When I stepped in to greet you the next morning, you gave me some serious tongue lashing asking, "Who sleeps without seeing the Father of the House?"

You made sure my fear of livestock especially poultry was thrown out of the window. Your command that evening, "Spencer, carry that turkey now" was the remedy I needed for my lily livered attitude to poultry. For the dogs, from Flash to Bruno, the best I could do was feed them in the cage. I never got to really deal with the fear of dogs.

Daddy, your generousity and fatherly care extended to my wife and children. When we visited with our first daughter, the evening and morning was full of Grandpa cares. And you still travelled all the way to Eruwa when Olive was born.

You were down to earth. There are things I saw you did that formed a permanent mark of humility in my mind. Ah! I saw you apologise when no one ever thought you did anything wrong. I saw you handle tough matters when everyone else backed off.

I remember when I found myself on the team working for the promotion of a Private University- I wondered what I was doing there. Then I remembered that I have an amazing Grand-Uncle. One call to you and my confidence rose. I spoke about you with so much relish. My admiration of you rose when the person leading the team said, "Prof. Adu is my boss on this job. I am glad that I can have his contact. He will be an asset".

Daddy, if I had an hint that the cash gift last week was a good-night, I would have asked that you hold, bank it and I would collect with interest later. You mean more than that.

Grandpa, if I had known that the "We are proud of you" was a parting shot, I would have asked that your voice be recorded so I can hear you say it again and again.

You passed on a Legend.

When I was called on Sunday Morning that you were down, I thought it was one of the many afflictions of the righteous that I have seen you overcome. I did not know it was the beginning of a journey to the land where the street are gold and the sun never sets.

I learnt you waved us all a Good Night before you took the Chariot to Glory.

(Rev) Emeritus Prof. Israel Folorunsho Adu, your Son loves you! I can stil hear you say, "Spencer, my dear friend..." And your laughter has not left my memory.

Rest in Peace Dad.

Sealed with Swollen Eyes,

Temiloluwa Ola (The One you nicknamed Spencer)

Dear Prof,
If only I had realized it that I was speaking with you for the last time about a fortnight ago when you called me on phone as you regularly do since leaving the services of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) about two years ago... maybe I would have dragged the conversation a little longer! Alas!

Oh death, where is your sting?
Oh grave, where is your victory?
But thanks to God Almighty who gave us victory through our Lord Jesus Christ!

I came to know Prof. Adu closely eight years ago when I was assigned the responsibility as the Desk Officer/Contact Person for African Council for Distance Education (ACDE), and he the Director of the ACDE-Quality Assurance and Accreditation Agency, hosted by the National Open University of Nigeria.

In the course working under him, I found Prof. Adu an indefatigable leader who led by example, the first to step forward and the last to sit down when a task is to be undertaken.
In spite of the lofty heights he had attained before coming to NOUN, Prof. demonstrated uncommon humility in and out of work environment. He wore it like a cloak.
Prof. Israel Folorunso Adu, emeritus professor of no mean repute, though your exemplary sun has set, the rays it left behind will linger for a long time. Your legacy in NOUN in particular and the other institutions you have worked in general will continue to tell your story, long after you have gone.
As you take your rest in the bosom of your Saviour, I pray that the Holy Spirit comfort your family, and those of us who have come to know you.
Adieu Sir.

“How are the mighty fallen, and the weapons of war perished!” (2 Samuel 1: 27)
I was severely pained to hear that, Professor Israel Folorunso Adu has passed on to the glory. He was former Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta - Nigeria and Director, African Council for Distance Education (ACDE) Quality Assurance and Accreditation Agency (ACDE QAAA) hosted in Nigeria by NOUN. It was during his tenure as the Director of ACDE QAAA that, the Quality Assurance and Accreditation Toolkit and Quality Assurance Policy Framework were produced, validated and received by ACDE member institutions for use. The ACDE Toolkit also has its versions in English, French, Portuguese and Spanish languages. The instrument has indeed up-scaled the status of ACDE and has helped ODL institutions to handle the moral burden and wrong impression that ODL programmes are of lower status. Many ACDE member institutions are also able to use it as reference to prove the quality of delivery services of their programmes. In some countries like Nigeria, Tanzania, Mozambique etc, the instrument has been incorporated into the instruments being used by the national regulatory authorities for accrediting ODL programmes. Emeritus Professor Israel Adu was married with children. May God the merciful grant him a place in paradise and give comfort to the family which he left behind, amen.
Professor Rotimi Ogidan, Executive Director, African Council for Distance Education, Nairobi, Kenya.

Professor Adu was a simple, unassuming person. You always feel comfortable in his company. What a great GEM we lost in Animal Science community and the academia. Rest in perfect peace. Adieu

It all still feels surreal to know that we will not see again on this side of eternity. My first reaction was shock and disbelief because you were always so full of life, and in all the time I knew you, you were never one to be sick, not even once. You were a mentor and father at the same time. You were humble almost to a fault. You displayed exemplary commitment and great team spirit throughout the period we worked together, in its early days, on the African Council for Distance Education Quality Assurance and Accreditation agency (ACDE QAAA) project. You were extremely focused In every assignment you took on. I am so sad but also consoled by the very impactful and godly life you lived. May the Lord comfort and grant your entire family much grace. Rest in peace, Prof until resurrection morning. Christine Ofulue

Uncle mi, when we spoke about a forthnight before your departure, hardly did I know that the "goodbye" would be for the eternal Glorious appearing. You came as an angel to guide and encourage me at a point in my life when I needed support to go on. The day I called you, it was partly in appreciation of that sincere contribution and phase of my life which I have tended to celebrate every year with my diary notations. I will forever be grateful. Please keep resting till the saints meet again in His Presence.
