Workin Cattle

March 7, 2021
We moved to the farm in Powderly where I turned 10, so needless to say I had no experience workin cattle, meaning vaccinations, dehorning, castrations, etc but Daddy soon began teaching Larry and me about those very things. Another thing, less tangible but never the less very real, was the unspoken behavior of cowboys workin cattle. Essentially, it becomes a no holds barred battle of wills, intuition, behavior and frustration.
What I learned immediately was that the normal behavior I had been accustomed to between my father and me and Larry, was temporarily “suspended” during our sessions. Looking back, I feel sorry for Daddy havin to try and work cattle with two snot nosed kids. I wouldn’t trade nothin for those memories now. As Larry, me and Daddy would crowd and ease the cows towards the open gate of the corral, I can hear his encouraging words “hold whatcha got, hold whatcha got”.
you woulda been 97 today and your Daddy, Oscar, would have been 130 earlier in the week. And I’m 66. Whew, hard to believe
