Karen, I have been thinking about you the past couple days and thank you for sharing the Linda Ellis poem. It sounds from the comments from Jack's friends and family that he fully lived between the numbers. During this tough time it is a good reminder to think about our dash and the dashes of our families. It has been a pleasure getting to know you and working with you and I can see that the apple didn't fall far from the tree. RIP

My father was a hardworking man with the utmost values I will keep with me forever.

This is a poem I have always treasured and still stands true today.
The Dash by Linda Ellis

I read of a man who stood to speak at the funeral of a friend. He referred to the dates on the tombstone from the beginning... to the end.
He noted that first came the date of birth and spoke of the following date with tears, but he said what mattered most of all was the dash between those years.
For that dash represents all the time they spent alive on earth and now only those who loved them know what that little line is worth.
For it matters not, how much we own, the cars... the house... the cash. What matters is how we live and love and how we spend our dash.
So think about this long and hard; are there things you'd like to change? For you never know how much time is left that still can be rearranged.
To be less quick to anger and show appreciation more and love the people in our lives like we've never loved before.
If we treat each other with respect and more often wear a smile... remembering that this special dash might only last a little while.
So when your eulogy is being read, with your life's actions to rehash, would you be proud of the things they say about how you lived your dash?

My father truly lived an amazing and beautiful “dash”

I did not ever meet Jack. I heard lots about him from his daughter Karen. He was a loving father and grandfather and he will be missed.

'Forever Missed' sums it up. Jack truly was a one of a kind man who lit up a room with such a sincerity, interest and passion. He will be sorely missed for numerous reasons by many. Jack had an uncanny view about life that was an example he once told me he never asked 'why'... I will never forget that. Thank you for your friendship. Rest in Peace.

What a great man!  It was an honor to know him, to have learned so much from him and to have been friends with him.

I have no doubt he is up in heaven sitting near Jesus and being honored for all he did in this world.

….And the word became flesh, love was the word and Jack Gress was the flesh, he dwelt among us, rendering kindness, Generosity, and respect. Jack taught us about love by how he interacted and treated all he met on his journey. The Village of Brewster, Town of Southeast and Putnam County has lost a great Patriarch!
Jack served, respected and gave all of himself for our Veterans, His God, family, and extended family (SOMEDAY COMMUNITY) HE will be greatly missed.
TILL WE ALL MEET AGAIN UNDER THE WINGS OF A Cherubim, please take our love with you, as Jimmy and Denis greet you entering the KINGDOM OF GOD! RIP

Dear Jack,

The battle is 'oer, the race is run. May you rest with God the Father, Holy Ghost and the Son.

You were a great influence on my life and so many others as you led by example, stayed humble, worked for our Republic with tireless dedication and devotion and always ready and able to serve. You remain a prince of a man. I was honored to know you.

Eternal rest grant unto him O Lord and let the perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen.
