Uncle Jack, continue resting with the angels. A beautiful soul you were, that smile, those elite jokes, the jazz, will fondly be remembered always. When I took that cool pic of you in the pink shirt during Xmas, little did I know it would be our last banter. You said “damn, that’s a cool pic of me!” Indeed it’s dapper. Rest Uncle Jack, in Gods bosom. Amen

Jack was a man with many talents and responsibilities. However I mostly remember him for making Jazz a thing in Kenya.

Sometimes on his pioneering Jazz Show on Capital FM he was forced to play smooth jazz - side eye to that. This was because the producers pressed him to play what we Kenyan’s like, as the jazz melodies of old would literally fly over our heads.

Jack, as you Jazz it on high, up in the sky, your inspiration, vision and love continues to fly.

With liturgical regularity I listen to jazz every Sunday evening, a practice set by you and as I enjoy the complicated progressions of augmented chords, I’m filled with admiration and the happiest memories.

God bless you Jack, and to all family and friends, may the Lord keep and protect you as we celebrate Jack’s life.

As Restoration of Life Centre ,
Bishop Dr. Henry N. OMAE and Family we celebrate Jack Ojiambo . We thank God for the strength and courage he has granted us and the Ojiambo's family.
It's still fresh in our minds and hearts the impact that Jack brought to us, as a ministry as well as a family. He was part of us, a brother , an uncle , mostly a great friend. We believe Jack is with Christ in his rest. Till we meet again Buddy.

Romans 6: 7 -9 says:
For he that is dead is freed from sin.Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him: Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him.

Jack, I am very saddened by your passing away. Gone too soon. Even though we were family friends from the 70s, we actually became real friends as parents through our daughters when they were in nursery school. I remember the detailed plans for Holly's weekends, birthdays etc, numerous lunches, dinners. I especially remember you always whipping up your famous mac and cheese dinner just for her.
I will remember our long debates about everything and anything, and boy could you argue like we were in the Supreme Court.
You had such detailed plans for your latest creation, your APP, and your future as well as Holly's.
May she always know how deeply you love her, she was the fire in your engine.
May you rest in eternal peace dear friend. God bless you.

Jack,
Your voice every Sunday was a soothing balm as the rest of the week's stress faded away to the tunes of jazz. You introduced so much knowledge to those of us who know nothing about the genre, and will forever be remembered.
Thank you for sharing all that you knew and loved about the music.

Sanda, and to the entire family, I pray that you'll be comforted and find peace with his passing.

I hope there's plenty of jazz in the next life.

The Connector

I was the" Rookie Jazz Event Organiser", fresh off the boat with no clue of how big the task I had embarked on was and I needed grace to pull this event off . 2009 was the year the pioneer jazz event rolled into Kenya. You introduced me to a jazz promoter and sold our event on air, and as they say, the rest is history... Your ask of all this was nothing more than a backstage pass to meet the band. Thank you for your time, dedication and passion... My condolences to your beautiful daughter, mum and sisters ... your music plays on. Rest in Peace.

I met Jack in early 1983 as I joined high school and he was in form 2. We were in the same dormitory and he was assigned to me as my guardian. I must say he was a kind, gentle guy who made every effort to take care of me. He didn't speak recklessly like many other form twos! Chose his words well. He never mistreated me as was the custom in our days in boarding school. He dressed impeccably even in school uniform! And loved rugby! We shall miss him as his community of school mates. My class has had lots of good things to say about Jack! My prayers and God's comfort be with Jack's mum, his daughter, his sisters and the entire family.

Jack we met in Standard 1 (and neighbours in Upper Hill) in hospital Hill and quickly became firm gang members with Nzambu, Tesfa and the rest of the crew.  We played cops and robbers occassional with real guns :) We grew up meeting often and everywhere through the years. Your warmth, joy, intellect, depth and optimism will be missed by all. Until we meet again!

Jack we knew each other as kids through our mums friendship and the fact that they belonged Bukhayo Women’s Association and we later interacted in high school when you and Esther were both at Alliance and I in Limuru Girls. It was always laughs with you Jack whether it was the random meeting at Sippers or bumping into you at Lavington shops. When Mike and I met we reconnected and he always talks about a certain Alfa that you owned. Thanks for hanging out with us during the little toast we had for Mikes 60th just last July at Ankole in the midst of COVID restrictions. Go well Jack ... Rest In Peace till we meet again.

Hi, Jack ............We have been talking, conversing, discussing about so many issues for the last 20 years.
The Small Law Firm operating in an old leaking Garage is where you gave me a desk, its what you could afford then, and we were all happy working together for the common Goal. The fond memories in my heart are large, your verbal wish about the App, your daughter, Holly and your retirement age are vivid.
You gave me a chance to work for your firm and you never had the BIG MAN SYNDROME.

Jack, The Grass is Greener on the other side..........RIP

Bro Jack you left without saying Goodbye. I wish I stayed in the big city longer but life is never predictable. Memories from the environs of Lavy will stay with me forever especially Kengeles where we would share everything from almost every facet of life (music, sports, education, family, friendship, business..........). Fare thee well buddy. To the family God's compassionate empathy, to the rest of us, let's keep Jack's legacy alive.

Rest in peace Brother Jack. I first met Jack about 30 years ago in Nairobi.. I remember the early days when we would laugh hard watching Homer Simpson on the old VHS. Over the past 30 years Jack always welcomed me back to Nairobi during my Visits and made sure to update me on the new happening spots. Visiting Nairobi will not be the same without Jacks Hospitality. Jack will be greatly missed.

Jack, you were one of the best radio presenters in Kenya. I first started listening to you in 1996 at a very young age. Everything that I know about jazz at this point in my life is all thanks to you. You were articulate and very knowledgeable. You made the capital jazz club very interactive and lively. You played some of the best jazz music and every time your show ended on Sundays, I was always eager to tune in to the next one. May you rest in peace Jack! My thoughts and prayers go out to your family.

I never knew Jack as an individual... but his work definitely touched me. I can attribute my love for Jazz to Jack Ojiambo's Capital Jazz Club that has been running since 1996. To me, he was the voice of Jazz. As a young man in the late 90s, I had just begun to understand music. For the most part, I had grown up to believe that Jazz was Kenny G and the random Dave Brubeck with his all too popular Take 5. But after discovering the Capital Jazz Club, I gained a deeper understanding of this fine music. It is from him that I first heard of Jazz greats like Thelonius Monk and Miles Davies. It was from him that I learnt about all the beautiful sub-genres of Jazz and everything in between. It is from him that I gained wonderful insights and experienced musical growth. And it is through this influence, that I was able to dabble a little bit into Jazz piano.

To the family and close friends, I'm sure Jack touched all of you in a special way. As a parent, brother, son, cousin and uncle, his presence and influence must have meant a lot. As professionals in the legal field, a brilliant member has been lost. That can never be replaced.

Let us celebrate the joy he brought to all of us. Because he indeed touched each one of us in a special way. And certainly, he influenced the careers, life choices and passions of many. My condolences to the family. May God grant you strength and solace during this difficult moment. May Jack's would rest in eternal peace.

Jack Ojiambo was a friend of mine. We first met as students in London in 1988 and immediately hit it off due to a mutual love of Jazz, Hip Hop and Soul music, and a similar dry sense of humour. On all my professional trips to Nairobi over the past 20 years I met with him socially. A highlight was appearing as a guest on Capital FM Jazz show in 2009 when we talked about my days presenting BBC World Service Radio shows and played some of my all time favourite jazz tracks. It seems just yesterday that he and our mutual friend Nyaga drove all the way to a Nairobi airport hôtel to have a Sunday lunch with me while I was in 16 hours transit. My last memory of him was a cracking farewell joke, a laugh, a hug and a pat on the back. RIP my brother. Our souls will meet again. I know that truth to be true. In the meantime when you encounter the soul energy of Miles, Dizzy, Hugh, Jonas, Bheki, Charlie P, Lady Day, Ella, Sarah, I trust you will share with them that last joke based on the Casablanca scène clip you shared me 10 days ago #rudenottoo #gonebutneverforgotten

Jack it's hard to imagine that you are no more. Thank you for passing on your love for Jazz to us. Capital Jazz Club was never to be missed. You made our Sunday evenings easier to handle as Monday was on the horizon. You were a great soul, a great friend to all of us, an amazing dad to Holly and I pray that God will comfort her in every way possible as well as your entire family. Rest in eternal peace Jack. No more pain.

I Remember the Surprise when I saw you in your much preferred Tweed Jacket in Lancaster Gate on your way to class and you maintained that same Mantra at times even though the tide turned against you ..

Jack's passion for life, jazz and Kilimani was infectious. Always ready to jump in. My last memory was asking Jack to deejay at the Kilimani Festival. He gladly stepped and took over the music for a couple of hours. Didn't expect to be paid. Playing to the crowds was enough for Jack. Love and will miss you brother. Look for Chick Corea, Miles Davis, Billie Holiday and Bob Collymore. Suspect they will be in some club jamming.
Rest in Power.

I first met Jack after his first year at University & he was home for the holidays. 30 odd years ago.

We would hangout with Nyaga & Bosco....who introduced him to Jazz going to tiny clubs in London. The thing that struck me was his dress sense .He was very avant-garde back then (these designer rarukad jeans,Jack had them.before anyone...this 30 years ago.) & that was from one of our favourite retailers back then "Topman" .Being stylish was just so him, way back when .I think back to another memory... Jack again super avante-garde.He was riding a bicycle to work before any of us in our set. Then remarkably .... there was that contagious laugh.Especially when there was mischevious stuff.
Later in life it was the convincing...he always had the ability to make you consider stuff and look in a another direction.

The thing with Jack is he could tell stories in ways that always left his audience mesmerized. The banter in our little quartet was always so funny and charged . You always took something away for yourself...that would challenge whatever you thought previously. God save you if you were the runt in a group .You would have to go up several levels in whatever topic you would discuss.Be it Sport or Music or Culture or what made up a proper Full English Breakfast . He was always up for a debate and he would get the niggle in there too. Peeps would respond robustly. It would make the ordinary extraordinary. It didn't matter what station you were in life .This was an individual who would engage you.

That mesmerising quality is continued throughout his life. A maverick and someone who wouldn't always go with the status quo.

I would meet him later in life when our daughters would play together along with her cousins at birthdays and other occasions too.

The shock of his sudden passing is heart wrenching . Rest in eternal peace Jack .....rest with the Angels Rest with Papa and Peter.....You have gone too soon.
Till we meet again.

Jack Ojiambo, you were an elegant bloke, you were charismatic and the holder of that ever memorable subtle laughter that would echo in the background.

Mon frère et ami Jack

I can’t imagine that during my next trip to Nairobi I won’t see you to share a meal at our favorite spot “Palacina” where I met you back in 2004. We immediately clicked for our passion and love for Jazz. I vividly remember the invitation you extended to me to join you one Sunday evening at the Capital FM Studio and you asked me to bring my favorite album to play. I brought “Sketches of Spain” by Miles Davis. You played the entire set. Both the notes and the conversation are still alive in my memory.
Thank you my brother for the friendship, good laugh and warm welcome to your universe. You will be dearly missed.

We connected, collaborated, partied, fought. He was my friend, lawyer, workmate and client. He made me wade through mud and sewage taking pics in Gatina Ward when he was running for office. I never knew Kawangware was so huge until that day. He made me party at Bavaria for Vinyl events. He blocked a landlord from auctioning me. I tried to help him sell his drop top VW car. We kept trying to start that Jazz radio station. He dined in my house and I dined at his. I wish we made up after our last fall-out. Jack, you had big dreams, but God had plans for you. Rest in peace, bro.

I have no words to express my utter shock and grief at your sudden departure.

I shall fondly remember the great times we shared and the ideas we bounced around.

Thank you so much for your contribution in opening up the Kenyan Jazz scene, and for the support you have up and coming jazz artists.

My prayers and condolences go out especially to Holly, who has learned of death's cruel hand all too soon.

Rest In Peace Brother. Tutaonana Baadaye. This tune is for you...

This news came as such a shock. I wish I had gotten a chance to reconnect with you before this sad day. I did try, but it was not to be. From thousands of miles, I cannot even say goodbye properly.
When I was in primary school I remember I used to ride my bike to your home nearly every day in Riverside during the holidays. What fun we had.
Your family was so welcoming I always felt at home, I remember we even went to the village one Christmas.
Gone way too soon bro.
God bless

Uncle Jack was a vibrant soul!
It was how he argued and won arguments like the lawyer he was. It was the way he would entertain the audience in a Jazz radio show or Jazz-related event. And the way he would sometimes be so goofy with his daughter Holly. Not to forget his great sense of humour, making people laugh at any and every gathering. He almost always was in great and welcoming moods.

We will miss you and your vibrant soul Uncle Jack! You will forever be in our memories and hearts. May you rest easy

Where do I even begin. Jack was my dear friend that began back in the days as teenagers. My first experience in the party scene was with Jack. This is when carnivore was the main spot. We became good friends that extended beyond partying and I got to know the family well. One thing that was clear was our love for music. A lot of my cool music in the 80s was from Jack. You will be missed. Jack is not gone, he is playing jazz for the angels in Radio Heaven. Til we meet again bro. Rest well

Sunrise 24 July 1968  - Sunset 20 February 2021

It is with humble acceptance of God's will that we announce the demise of Jack Hillary Ojiambo on 20 February, 2021.  Jack was a lawyer with a special interest in arbitration; and a jazz enthusiast who will be fondly remembered for the Capital Jazz Show and We Love Vinyl Worldwide.

Beloved son of the late Prof. Hillary Peter Ojiambo and Hon. Prof. Julia Ojiambo.

Adoring father of Holly.

Brother to Amb. Josephine Ojiambo,  Theresa Ojiambo and Sanda Ojiambo.

Uncle to the late Peter, Marie, Julie, Veronica and Hillary
Eulogy of Jack Hillary Makokha Ojiambo
Jack Hillary Makokha Ojiambo was born on 24th July 1968. He was the third born child of the late Prof. Hillary Peter Ojiambo and Hon. Prof. Julia Ojiambo.

Education
He went first to Parklands Nursery School and then to Audrey Taylors Kindergarten, where he is remembered as a boisterous young child, and where he made some of his first lifelong friends. He attended Hospital Hill Primary School where he began to develop his love for sports, initially as a swimmer. After completing his Certificate of Primary Education (CPE), Jack gained admission to the Alliance High School where he excelled in his studies, particularly focused on the Arts. It was at the Alliance High School where he started to play rugby and represented his school in national league events.

After successfully completing his O levels at the Alliance High School, Jack proceeded to Kent College, Canterbury in the United Kingdom for his A levels. He did his LLB in London and returned to Kenya to attend Kenya School of Law and complete his Diploma in Law and was admitted to the role of the Advocates of the High Court of Kenya. After this, Jack went on to gain a Master’s degree in Law from Queen Mary College University, and later qualified as an arbitrator.

Career
Jack worked at the firm of Archer and Wilcock Advocates, Agricultural Finance Corporation, the Credit Reference Bureau and then started the firm of Jack Ojiambo and Co. Advocates.

While he practiced law, Jack also worked at Capital Radio for 10 years. While at Capital FM, he did sabbaticals at the BBC and annually attended the Cape Town Jazz Festival where he expanded his love of jazz. Later, he did a short stint at Nation Radio and then began to expand his jazz sphere working online and presenting on digital radio platforms.

In 2012, Jack decided to make a foray into the political arena under the Labour Party of Kenya when he ran for Councillor in Westlands Constituency. While not successful, he expanded his knowledge of grassroots politics. He continued to be a keen follower of politics and participated and represented the Labour Party at local and national events.

Jack was recently appointed the Local Chair of the Queen Mary School of Law Alumni in Kenya. He was an avid reader and kept up to date with the developments in the practice of Law

Family
Life Jack was a loving and dedicated father to his daughter, Holly, in whom he invested much time mentoring her in life skills, enjoying her growth and development in the academic area. Recently, he began to prepare for her university education. He celebrated Holly at every possible occasion. He sometimes brought her to the radio station to participate in his jazz shows and on one occasion she presented the Jazz Quiz segment on his show.

Jack was deeply loved and cared for by his mother and father. They invested in his education, his family and social life. He was the brother to three sisters; Josephine and Theresa who were both older than him, and Sanda his younger sister. He always engaged in healthy debate with his sisters and challenged them to excel in all spheres.

Jack’s nieces and nephews, the late Peter, Marie, Julia, Vera, Hillary and Silvester would refer to him as an award-winning and loving uncle. He helped nurture their passions and mentored them in their careers. He would proudly take them to his radio shows and events, where he encouraged them to participate in giving shout outs and would later invite them to share in his love of vinyl. He shared in their joys, was proud of their development of their personalities and challenged them to achieve their highest potential

Health
Jack had a long term heart condition caused by a weak heart muscle, referred to as a myopathy. He was cared for by Dr. Dan Gikonyo and a team of dedicated physicians. Over time, this heart condition affected his kidneys. During the month of October 2020, Jack’s condition deteriorated, causing the need for in-patient hospital care for over two months. Jack was discharged from hospital on December 30th. On his return home, he would return to the hospital for outpatient treatment and dialysis periodically. On Saturday 20th February, during his dialysis session his heartbeat became irregular, a condition formally referred to as Ventricular Tachycardia. It is this condition that caused his heart to cease and led to his sudden death.

We love you Jack. Rest in Peace

I met Jack, the founder of Jaaz show on Capital FM and as a lawyer through his good friend the late Ishan Kapila. Although we did not meet that often but whenever we did he was humble and his sense of humour was equally amazing.  We met in the legal circles too and was ready to give advise whenever called on to do so. Rest easy brother and condolences to the family

Jack, I had known you for what seems like an eternity, we worked together at Capital FM but above everything, you were my friend. We supported different teams in the EPL so I would always enjoy the serious banter & verbal jabs that we took at each other. We also used to talk about style, suits, brogues and how there was nothing better than a good tailored suit. I will truly miss you brother, watch over us and Rest in Power. Godspeed
