His Life
July 11, 2019

Jack Raymond Brown, 77, of Punta Gorda, FL, passed away peacefully in Fox River Grove, IL surrounded by his loving family on July 11, 2019.

Jack is survived by his daughters Kimberly Brown (Michael Frazier), Danielle Alarcon (Anthony Otte), son Michael (Therese DeNicolo Brown), his loving grandchildren Alyssa Alarcon, Henna Brown Frazier, Graysen Brown, and Avery Brown, as well as nieces, nephews and extended family. Jack was a loving father, son, grandfather, uncle, and friend to everyone.

Born in Ohio to Sophia (Toda) Brown, and adopted by Edward Brown, he was raised in both Chicago, Illinois and Little Rock Arkansas. He had a brother Donald Toda and is survived by his sister Mary Kelly.

Jack loved boating and working on boats whenever he could, smoking a good cigar in the sun, a hard day’s work, having fun, and spending time with family and friends. He also enjoyed movies and snacking was one of his favorite pastimes. Jack was always there to help friends when they needed him. He worked in various and numerous construction work for over 40 years and had his own lawn mowing business in Florida. For nearly 30 years, he lived in and raised his children in Fox River Grove, Illinois with his wife Anne Brown. Following his divorce, he moved to Florida where he lived for 18 years. He had made many friends and a wonderful life there. When he found out he was ill, he moved back to Illinois to spend every quality moment he could with his family.

A special thank you to Anne Brown, who lovingly supported Kim, Danielle, and Michael, as well as cared for Jack in his final weeks and days. Also, a special thank you to the people at Mercy Health Hospice in Rockford for their support and care during his final days.

A Celebration of Life Memorial is planned for Saturday, July 13, 2019 from 11:00 am- 12:00 pm at Willow Creek Church in Crystal Lake, IL followed by a reception. Remembering Jack

August 4, 2019
Jack you always brought joy when you came into town to visit. I will remember us sitting on the back porch in the cool of the evening sitting out there telling stories and talking about life and the things that could have been, should have been, what actually happened.  I remember starting those nights when the sun was almost down over the horizon, and all of us with a little sip of wine. We will always have these memories and memories of those long distance phone conversations. And  and the wisdom he would impart to us as we talked and you told us stories about Florida and your family back in  Ohio and Illinois.    Jack you will  always be missed and loved. So until we meet again in heaven I will always be thinking of you. And waiting for us to celebrate together again .  And so thankful for all the times we prayed together in person and on the phone!

Prayer:

Father, now is the time for tears. Now is the time to remember. Now is the time for all that we have in us to come out. Sadness, Humor, Fear, Anger, Joy and Tenderness. Our hearts are full and we offer them up to you. Our tender hearts are all we have. We ask that you hold us gently and care for our hearts as we remember Jack this morning.

Jack loved the Water, boating, being on the river.
He raised a family on the Fox River, and ended up living in Punta Gorda by the Peace River. Punta Gorda, Florida lies on the south bank of the tidal Peace River and the eastern shore of Charlotte Harbor, an arm of the Gulf of Mexico.

In a sense, Jack Brown was like the rivers he loved.

God created rivers to be amazing forces of nature.

Rivers are mysterious

Typically a source of a river starts in very discreet place, unknown to most, then as it flows it gets bigger - it moves toward action, carving out it’s place where it can flow easiest - sometimes creating beautiful results, sometimes damaging results.Mysteriously powerful.

Each river has its own song which changes with each season. Rivers in the UP after winter snow melts or in the fall when they start to die down. If you listen to a river enough, you can hear the whispers, the roaring, the mellowed sounds that are consistently never the same.

Jack was like a mysteriously powerful river

Smoked cigars. He kind of laughed in the face of life. Tough as nails - always looking forward to getting better. Kept on going.
Had to do it on his own - Marine, Construction. Working on High rises - keep on going. That takes a certain kind of grit.

Rivers are resourceful.

We benefit from rivers and their power every day. In the past they’ve helped us transport goods and protected us from enemies. They will change course if an obstacle gets in the way. You don’t know where they might go, but they keep flowing.

Jack was resourceful like a river.

A curiously resourceful person. Loved history and science and how things worked. Tinkering. Fixing engines. He enjoyed getting the most out of something. And he was a helpful tinkerer. He even tinkered in delivering babies - three of them.

Presented himself as strong and positive, but had a big heart - cared deeply about people. Helped others when they needed. His friends got the benefit of his heart. He showed his heart by helping others. He put his heart into his actions. He was a helpful resource.I asked Jack’s children - what was one resourceful characteristic - you got from your dad

Danielle - perseverance, drive and positivity, talking

Kim - Independence, fun loving and enjoy life

Michael - Humor - sense of humor

Rivers have those qualities as well.

Rivers are fun.Whether it’s boating or just a gathering places, rivers represent an exciting and fun reward from the long week of work.

Jack could be a river of fun. Sense of humor - was great - even in suffering - always joking around in the face of diversity. Used humor as a tool. Makes everything lighter. Adventurous guy - on a canal Loved the sun - ended up in Florida.

Sometimes he babbled like a brook - if you’d ask Jack a question, he’d answer you, it would just take a long time. He couldn't control himself in explaining how things work. His homework help with the kids would turn into a five min explanation - into a 1.5 hour explanation.

He loved to play and be silly.

Rivers have a peaceful end.

Ultimately, a river flows to its end - a bigger place than before. It gives itself up to join the bigger, expansive place it was destined to go.

He got tender with illness. He really connected with his kids and grandkids. Came up to be with his kids and family. And Anne, bless you for being a blessing to him. What a servant heart you have to do that.

Jack in his battle with cancer, brought his family back together. Maybe that wasn’t the way he planned it or the way you planned it - but it was the way God brought you together.

Sometimes adversity in relationships can bring unity, growth and bonding. Relationships are more restored, answers to prayers might not be the exact way but they are answered. Love covers all.

Sitting by rivers can bring peace and sense of purpose.

Rivers are mysterious Rivers are resourceful Rivers are fun

Rivers have a peaceful end

Jack was very much like the rivers he adored. In fact, It is Jack's wishes to be cremated and his ashes scattered in two of his favorite places– the Fox River in Illinois and the Peace River in Florida. So part of him will literally be in rivers. But they’ll all end up in the same place!

Psychologist Craig Lounsbrough says “Life is much like a river. I can’t determine where the river comes from or where it’s flowing to. But I can immerse myself in it as it’s flowing by me.”

Psalm 1 states that blessed is the person who delights in God and meditates on his word, they are like a tree that is planted by rivers of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither—whatever they do prospers.

Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, rivers of living water will flow from within them. - John 7:37-38

Let us listen to the voice of Jesus who calls us to come and drink - and experience the river of living water that flows from grace and love that covers all of us.

Prayer:

Loving Father,
It’s by faith that we thank you for your offer of living water - we can jump into the river of life and fight the current, or we can let it take us for the ride of our life. Thank you for Jack’s life and legacy - imperfect as it was - help us be grateful for the lessons of love and grace you offer to us - and let us continue to grieve and remember, finding comfort from you and each other until we too experience the peaceful end in Jesus.
Amen

Benediction:

God bless you and keep you,
God smile on you and gift you,
God look you full in the face and make you prosper.
